Build the dashboard as two separate monitors: one for the FFmpeg process on your machine, and one for YouTube’s incoming stream and broadcast status. A small backend can collect both sets of information and serve a read-only web page; add start and stop controls only after monitoring works reliably. An FFmpeg process that is running does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
How the dashboard fits together
FFmpeg runs on a computer or server you control and publishes media to the ingest address configured for your YouTube stream. YouTube exposes two related but distinct resources: a liveStream describes the incoming feed, while a liveBroadcast describes the viewer-facing event. The distinction is reflected in the liveStreams resource, the liveBroadcasts resource, and YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide.

A simple design has four parts:
- Browser UI: displays process state, YouTube stream and broadcast states, health issues, and when each value was last checked.
- Backend: checks YouTube’s API and returns a limited, normalized status response to the browser.
- Process status adapter: observes FFmpeg on the host where it runs and collects a short, sanitized log excerpt.
- FFmpeg publisher: sends video to the ingest endpoint using the stream details YouTube provides.
Keep process control and YouTube API access on the backend. Never send a stream key, OAuth refresh token, or arbitrary shell command to browser code.

1. Define separate status fields
Show local process state and YouTube state as separate fields, not as one green “live” indicator. A useful first screen includes the FFmpeg process running or exited, a brief sanitized stderr excerpt, the selected broadcast title and lifecycle state, the incoming stream status, any reported health issues, and the timestamps of the last successful local check and API poll.

Local process state and stderr are application-level observations from the machine running FFmpeg, not fields supplied by YouTube. Label them accordingly.
2. Configure FFmpeg to publish to YouTube
Use the ingest details supplied for the YouTube stream. FFmpeg documents RTMP output syntax and a publishing example in its documentation. YouTube’s liveStream resource contains ingestion addresses and the stream name. Treat that stream name as a secret, like a password: keep it out of the page, browser requests, and logs.

FFmpeg’s documentation says it is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest FFmpeg revision. Check the documentation for the version installed on your host before relying on a particular option.
3. Read the YouTube API resources
Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to retrieve the stream and broadcast details the dashboard needs. Account-specific broadcast listing uses OAuth authorization. The liveBroadcasts.list method documents the youtube.readonly scope for read-only access; request only the scopes needed for the features you implement.

Poll at a measured, modest interval and show when the last successful poll completed. There is no universally correct interval established here: choose one that fits your application’s freshness needs and API constraints rather than implying that the displayed state is instantaneous.
4. Normalize states without hiding detail
YouTube documents stream states including active, created, error, inactive, and ready. The stream health status can include configuration issues. Display the state and any issues instead of compressing every result into a binary green/red signal.

Keep broadcast lifecycle state separate from incoming stream status. A broadcast can exist without being live, and a local encoder can be running while YouTube reports the incoming stream as inactive.

Choose monitoring and control deliberately

Add start and stop controls safely
Only add controls once the read-only status path is dependable. The browser should request a specific allowed action; the backend should own the command and process lifecycle.

- Use a fixed server-side command template. Do not build shell commands by concatenating browser-supplied text.
- Validate identifiers. Accept only known stream or job identifiers and verify that the requested action applies to that job.
- Use a process supervisor or equivalent lifecycle manager. Track the process the backend started, rather than treating a successful button response as proof that FFmpeg remains active.
- Report transitions explicitly. Show requested, starting, running, stopping, exited, or failed states as appropriate to your implementation, alongside the independently polled YouTube state.
- Keep secrets server-side. Restrict access to the controls and avoid returning stream keys, OAuth refresh tokens, or unsanitized logs.
The official references define the YouTube resources and FFmpeg publishing behavior; they do not prescribe a programming language, web framework, process manager, hosting model, or production security design. Choose those for your environment and review the implementation’s security before exposing controls.
Interpret mismatched or stale status
- FFmpeg exited: the local publishing process is no longer running. Check the host’s process record and sanitized stderr; YouTube’s stream state is a separate signal.
- FFmpeg running, stream inactive: the process may not be publishing successfully, or YouTube may not yet report an active incoming feed. Check the configured ingest details and the latest stream health response.
- Stream active, health issues present: show the reported configuration issues and address them instead of marking the stream unconditionally healthy.
- Broadcast not live: distinguish the broadcast lifecycle state from the incoming stream state; a ready or active incoming stream does not by itself mean the viewer-facing event is live.
- API authorization fails: report that YouTube status could not be refreshed, rather than reusing an old value as current. Check authorization and permissions, then show the last successful poll time.
- Status timestamp is old: mark the data stale when checks fail or stop. A timestamp prevents readers and operators from mistaking a cached state for a current one.
Optional metrics and encoder settings
YouTube documents statistics.totalChatCount for live broadcasts under the documented visibility and chat conditions. The field may change during a broadcast; do not assume it is always present or retained after the event completes. It is an optional metric, not a measure of incoming video health.
No single bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe setting is specified here as a universal recommendation. Those values depend on the ingest protocol, the FFmpeg build, and current YouTube guidance. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance for the chosen protocol and verify that command options match the installed FFmpeg version.
