How to Build a Scalable WordPress Site That Handles Traffic Spikes

Learn how to layer CDN delivery, server page caching, persistent object caching, PHP capacity, database maintenance and autoscaling so WordPress stays available during sudden traffic surges.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A WordPress site survives a traffic spike when most requests are served at the edge or from a full-page cache, while the smaller stream of dynamic requests has enough PHP workers, database capacity and persistent object caching. Build those layers in that order, then verify them with load tests and a written incident plan. Autoscaling is useful insurance, but it cannot compensate for uncached pages, slow queries or exhausted PHP workers.

What a spike-resistant WordPress architecture looks like

Traffic usually overwhelms WordPress because every visit reaches the origin server and starts PHP work. A scalable design prevents that path wherever the response can safely be reused.

  1. CDN: serves static files and cacheable HTML from edge locations, keeping the majority of requests away from the origin.
  2. Server-level full-page cache: stores complete responses for anonymous visitors, commonly with Varnish or an Nginx FastCGI cache.
  3. Persistent object cache: stores frequently requested database results for dynamic requests, including logged-in sessions, carts, filtered listings and administration screens.
  4. PHP worker capacity: processes the requests that cannot use a page cache.
  5. Database maintenance: prevents slow queries, oversized tables and lock contention from becoming the limiting factor.
  6. Autoscaling and fast upgrades: add capacity when the remaining uncached workload rises.
  7. Observability and load testing: show whether the site is approaching a limit before a public launch does.

These layers are complementary. A CDN does not replace page caching; page caching does not help a logged-in checkout; and Redis or Memcached does not cache complete pages. Treat each layer as a separate control with its own purge, bypass and failure behavior.

Start with a capacity model, not a visitor total

Monthly visits are too coarse for capacity planning. A sale can compress a month’s traffic into minutes, and a small number of uncached requests can exhaust the origin while a CDN reports excellent hit rates. Measure the workload that reaches PHP.

Record the traffic patterns that matter

  • Peak requests per second at the origin, not just page views.
  • The percentage of requests served by the CDN and full-page cache.
  • Anonymous versus logged-in traffic.
  • Checkout, cart, search, filter and API requests that must remain dynamic.
  • Response-time percentiles, especially p95 and p99, during a burst.
  • PHP worker utilization, queue time, CPU, memory, database connections and slow-query counts.

A useful planning illustration from vendor guidance is a 90% CDN hit rate: a 100,000-visitor burst would send roughly 10,000 requests to the origin instead of 100,000. That is an example for understanding the leverage of edge caching, not a guaranteed hit rate or performance result. Real hit rates depend on cache headers, cookies, URL variations, purges and the proportion of dynamic pages.

Convert response time into worker capacity

PHP workers are concurrent request slots. If four workers each spend an average of 400 milliseconds processing an uncached request, a simple upper-bound calculation is 4 ÷ 0.4 = 10 requests per second before queuing begins. This is a planning example, not a benchmark: database waits, external API calls, garbage collection and uneven request times reduce the practical rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the slowest important paths separately. A 100-millisecond cached product page and a two-second checkout request do not consume the same worker capacity. Increasing workers without enough CPU, memory or database connections can make contention worse rather than improving throughput.

Choose hosting for uncached work and failure recovery

Compare hosting plans by how they handle the requests that caching cannot remove. A plan that advertises large storage or a high monthly visitor allowance may still fail when its PHP worker limit, CPU share or database connection limit is reached.

Capability Questions to ask before signing up Why it matters during a spike
PHP workers How many workers are included? Can the limit be raised temporarily? Is queue time visible? Workers are the concurrency ceiling for uncached WordPress requests.
Object cache Is Redis or Memcached included? Is a persistent cache plugin or drop-in allowed? Is the service isolated per site? Dynamic pages repeatedly query the database; a persistent object cache can remove much of that work.
CDN and page cache Are they included, and can you control cache headers, cookies, exclusions and purges? Incorrect rules either waste origin capacity or serve private content to the wrong visitor.
Scaling Can CPU, memory and workers be increased without downtime? Is autoscaling available, and how is burst usage billed? Capacity must rise before queues turn into timeouts. Billing terms vary by service and plan.
Database Are slow-query logs, backups, replicas or a separate database tier available? Database contention often appears after the cache and PHP layers look healthy.
Testing and operations Can you run load tests, inspect origin logs and restore a backup quickly? A spike plan is only useful if its assumptions can be verified and reversed safely.

Managed platforms may bundle Varnish page caching and Redis, while some newer tiers offer Kubernetes-based autoscaling and load balancing. These are examples of capabilities to compare, not endorsements of a particular provider. Confirm current features directly because plan limits and pricing change.

Put a CDN in front of the site

Configure the CDN before tuning WordPress. Point the domain’s DNS to the CDN, enable caching for versioned static assets and set a clear policy for HTML. Keep the origin address private where the platform supports origin protection, and restrict direct access so attackers cannot bypass the edge.

Cache safely

  • Cache CSS, JavaScript, fonts and images for a long period when filenames contain a version or hash.
  • Cache public HTML only when the response is identical for all visitors.
  • Bypass requests carrying authentication, cart or session cookies unless you have explicitly designed a safe variant system.
  • Do not cache checkout, account, administration, preview, password-reset or personalized API responses.
  • Use purge-by-URL or purge-by-tag controls for urgent content changes; avoid purging the entire site for every edit.

Check the response headers from an anonymous browser and from a logged-in browser. Confirm that a cache hit is possible, that private responses carry an appropriate bypass signal, and that a purge causes the next request to fetch fresh content.

Enable server-level full-page caching for anonymous visitors

Server-level caching with Varnish or Nginx FastCGI cache usually runs before PHP and is faster and more predictable than asking a plugin to rebuild every page. Use the host’s documented integration where possible, because the correct rules depend on its web server, cookie names and purge mechanism.

Define the cache policy

  • Cache GET and HEAD requests for public pages.
  • Bypass when a request is logged in, has a cart or session cookie, is a POST, or targets an administrative or preview endpoint.
  • Exclude pages whose content changes per user, location, experiment or permission.
  • Set a reasonable time-to-live and purge on publishing, updating navigation, changing products or modifying templates.
  • Verify that cache keys include the scheme and host, and include only query parameters that genuinely alter the response.

Page caching reduces PHP work but can expose stale content if purge rules are incomplete. A short time-to-live is not a substitute for correct exclusions: a private response cached once can remain wrong until it expires or is purged.

Use persistent object caching for dynamic requests

WordPress’s built-in object cache is non-persistent by default. Its data normally lives only in memory for one request, so the next request repeats the database work. Persistence comes from a plugin or drop-in connected to a backend such as Redis or Memcached. Defining WP_CACHE by itself does not create persistent object caching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose and provision the backend

  • Redis: requires a Redis server. The official Redis Object Cache plugin supports backends including Predis, PhpRedis and Relay, plus replication, sentinels, clustering and WP-CLI.
  • Memcached: requires a memcached server and the PHP memcache or Memcached extension.
  • Host-provided service: preferable to running an unprotected daemon on the web server. Confirm isolation, memory limits, eviction policy, network access and restart behavior.

Install one persistent object-cache integration, not several competing drop-ins. Confirm in the plugin’s status screen or with WP-CLI that the drop-in is active, the backend is reachable and cache hits are increasing on repeated requests.

Understand what object caching does and does not do

Object caching stores application data such as query results and computed options; it does not deliver complete HTML pages. It is most valuable for logged-in users, product filters, forums, dashboards and other paths that cannot use a full-page cache.

Transients are stored in the options table by default. With a persistent object cache installed, transients can be served through that cache instead of the database. Code should still treat transient data as disposable and be able to regenerate it.

The WordPress developer documentation says cache data should be safe to lose: if the cache is corrupted or unavailable, the application should continue and rebuild values. Never store the only copy of orders, permissions, inventory or other authoritative records in Redis or Memcached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid assuming Redis is automatically faster

Object caching adds network and serialization work. The WP Redis plugin documentation warns that a page making 2,000 Redis calls can spend about two seconds on object-cache transactions. Profile call counts, payload sizes and hit rates; reduce repeated calls in plugins or custom code instead of enabling a backend and assuming every request improves.

Size PHP workers for the uncached path

Every uncached request occupies a worker until PHP finishes. Slow remote APIs, image processing, cron jobs and database locks extend that occupancy. Ask the host for the worker limit, maximum execution time, CPU allocation and queue metrics, then test at the same time as scheduled jobs.

Increase capacity in the right order

  1. Remove avoidable PHP requests with CDN and full-page caching.
  2. Find slow plugins, hooks and external calls using profiling and slow-request logs.
  3. Move recurring maintenance from web requests to system-level cron jobs where the host supports it.
  4. Enable persistent object caching and verify that database reads fall.
  5. Raise PHP workers only when CPU, memory and database connections can support them.
  6. Retest the checkout and other uncached paths after every change.

As a planning example, a store that rises from 20,000 to 120,000 monthly visits during a holiday sale may need four to eight PHP workers, object caching and burstable CPU. That range is vendor guidance rather than a universal requirement; request mix, cache hit rate and response time determine the real number.

Keep the database from becoming the bottleneck

A cache can hide database inefficiency until a purge or a spike of dynamic requests reveals it. Establish backups and a rollback plan before maintenance, then:

  • Review slow-query logs and add or correct indexes where query plans justify them.
  • Remove expired transients, abandoned sessions and obsolete plugin tables according to each plugin’s documented retention behavior.
  • Clean post revisions, auto-drafts, spam comments and excessive metadata after confirming they are not needed for recovery.
  • Keep table statistics current and check for fragmentation or oversized autoloaded options.
  • Run heavy reports and imports outside peak traffic, preferably on a separate worker or replica.
  • Use system-level cron instead of visitor-triggered pseudo-cron for predictable maintenance.

Do not delete rows merely because they are large. Verify ownership, retention requirements and restore procedures first; an aggressive cleanup can remove audit history or break a plugin.

Design explicitly for uncacheable commerce and user flows

Logged-in pages, carts, checkout, account areas, previews, searches with personalized results and many APIs must bypass full-page caching. Map these routes and test them independently. Persistent object caching can reduce repeated reads, but session correctness and inventory consistency still come first.

Protect correctness

  • Mark private responses as private and prevent them from entering shared caches.
  • Exclude cart, checkout and account cookies from cache keys unless the platform provides a tested hole-punching mechanism.
  • Invalidate product, price and stock objects when the source data changes.
  • Keep payment callbacks and webhooks idempotent so retries during a spike do not create duplicate orders.
  • Set timeouts for payment, shipping, email and other third-party calls; a stalled dependency can consume every PHP worker.

Use autoscaling as a backstop, not the first fix

Autoscaling can add web capacity when CPU, request rate or queue depth crosses a threshold. It cannot make an uncached design efficient, and it may react after a short spike has already caused timeouts. Scaling events also need warm-up time, shared storage, consistent configuration and a database that can accept the additional connections.

If autoscaling is unavailable, choose a host that permits a rapid plan upgrade without downtime. Confirm whether extra CPU, memory, workers, CDN transfer and database capacity are billed hourly, by usage or as a new plan. Automatic scaling does not by itself define the cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the application for more than one web server

  • Store uploads and generated assets in shared or object storage, or replicate them reliably.
  • Keep sessions in a shared store rather than local server memory.
  • Make deployments immutable or repeatable so new instances run the same code and configuration.
  • Use a shared persistent object-cache strategy with appropriate eviction and failover behavior.
  • Separate database scaling decisions from web scaling; adding web nodes does not solve a saturated database.

Load-test before a launch

Run tests against a staging environment that matches production hardware, PHP version, plugins, cache rules and database size. A synthetic test that bypasses the CDN or uses only a cached homepage can produce a reassuring but useless result.

  1. Build a workload mix: cached landing pages, uncached search, login, product detail, cart, checkout and API calls.
  2. Warm the CDN and page cache, then run a cold-cache scenario separately.
  3. Ramp gradually, hold the expected peak, and add a short burst above it to expose queue behavior.
  4. Record origin requests per second, cache-hit ratios, p50/p95/p99 latency, errors, PHP queue time, worker use, CPU, memory, database connections and slow queries.
  5. Repeat after enabling object caching, changing workers or modifying purge rules; compare the same workload.
  6. Stop if data integrity, payment behavior or error rates become unsafe, and restore the previous configuration.

Define pass criteria before testing. For example, require checkout errors to remain below your business threshold, no sustained worker queue, and acceptable p95 latency for both cached and uncached journeys. The exact thresholds belong to your service-level objectives, not to a generic WordPress number.

Monitor the signals that predict a crash

Signal What a rising value usually indicates First response
CDN or page-cache miss rate More traffic is reaching PHP than planned; cookies, query strings or purge rules may be defeating caching. Inspect cache headers and bypass rules before adding servers.
PHP queue time and busy workers Requests are waiting for execution slots. Find slow paths, pause nonessential jobs and add workers only if resources allow.
Database CPU, locks or connections Queries or connection pressure are limiting dynamic requests. Inspect slow queries, indexes, autoloaded options and connection pooling.
Object-cache hit rate and evictions The cache may be too small, poorly keyed or receiving low-value data. Profile keys and increase memory only after confirming useful reuse.
p95/p99 latency and 5xx errors Users are experiencing queueing, timeouts or dependency failures. Enable the incident runbook, protect checkout and reduce nonessential load.

Alert on trends, not just absolute CPU. A site can time out with moderate CPU when workers are blocked on a database or external service.

Common failure modes and fixes

The homepage is fast but checkout times out

The homepage is probably served from a page cache while checkout consumes PHP workers and database connections. Trace checkout latency, payment calls and session storage; verify object-cache availability and raise dynamic capacity only after removing avoidable waits.

Purging the cache makes the site collapse

A purge sends every request back to PHP and the database. Warm critical pages before announcing a campaign, use targeted purges, and test cold-cache behavior. If the site cannot tolerate a purge, its origin capacity or query efficiency is insufficient.

Redis is connected but performance is unchanged

Check whether requests actually hit the persistent drop-in, whether the workload is mostly full-page-cacheable, and whether plugins make excessive cache calls. A connected backend with a low hit rate or thousands of round trips may add overhead without reducing database work.

Adding workers increases errors

More workers can exceed CPU, memory, database connection or upstream limits. Reduce concurrency, inspect the new contention and size the database and external-service limits before raising the worker count again.

Visitors see stale or private content

Review cache keys, cookies, response headers and purge hooks. Bypass shared caches for authenticated and personalized responses, then test anonymous, logged-in and post-publish views in separate browser sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the path from a busy site to a larger platform

There is no universal visitor threshold at which WordPress must become distributed. A 2026 vendor guide places roughly 500,000 to 5 million visits among the range where object caching, tuned PHP workers and database cleanup become priorities, with horizontal scaling, read replicas, intelligent edge purging and dedicated infrastructure for uncacheable requests at higher volumes. Those are opinionated planning bands, not independent benchmarks; request mix and cacheability matter more than the headline visit count.

Use this progression:

  1. Single origin with CDN and page cache: suitable when most traffic is public and cacheable.
  2. Persistent object cache and tuned database: add when logged-in, search or commerce traffic grows.
  3. Larger or burstable origin: use when PHP queues or database resources approach limits during measured peaks.
  4. Multiple web nodes: introduce shared sessions, shared media and repeatable deployments before adding replicas.
  5. Read replicas and dedicated dynamic infrastructure: consider when read load, reporting or uncacheable traffic dominates and single-origin tuning is exhausted.

Pre-launch checklist

  • CDN DNS, origin protection, asset caching and purge behavior are verified.
  • Full-page cache rules cover anonymous GET requests and bypass private, cart, checkout, admin and preview traffic.
  • Persistent Redis or Memcached is installed, reachable and monitored; the application still works if the cache is emptied.
  • PHP worker limits, queue time, CPU, memory and database connections are known.
  • Slow queries, autoloaded options, transients, cron jobs and table growth have been reviewed.
  • Checkout, login, search, APIs, webhooks and payment retries have been tested under load.
  • Backups restore successfully, and cache purges or rollbacks have an owner and a documented command or control-panel path.
  • Autoscaling or a no-downtime upgrade path has confirmed billing and warm-up behavior.
  • Dashboards and alerts cover cache misses, PHP queues, database saturation, object-cache errors, latency and 5xx responses.
  • A launch runbook states who can pause campaigns, disable expensive features, scale resources and communicate an incident.

Bottom line

Build for the request that reaches PHP, not the visitor number printed on a hosting plan. Put a CDN and server-level page cache in front of public content, use persistent object caching for dynamic work, keep PHP and the database healthy, and validate the complete path with realistic load tests. Autoscaling then becomes a useful safety margin instead of an expensive substitute for a cacheable, well-profiled WordPress application.
