Which settings control Blood Moons?
Three server variables are relevant:

Keep the minimum at or below the maximum. If the two frequency values are equal, you are asking for a fixed interval rather than a range, although the game’s handling of that edge case is not documented in the available sources.

How the frequency range works
Most player explanations treat the two frequency settings as a random interval measured in in-game days. For example, setting both values to a range of 2 and 3 is commonly described as producing a Blood Moon every two to three in-game days. The game chooses a point within that interval rather than using a real-world calendar.
Another Steam-community interpretation says the minimum is the shortest gap before another Blood Moon can occur, while the maximum is the point at which the game forces one if it has not already happened. That interpretation has not been confirmed by official documentation, so use the labels as lower and upper bounds, not as a promise about the exact randomization algorithm.

Commonly reported defaults
Player discussions commonly cite 10 for BloodMoonFrequency_Min and 18 for BloodMoonFrequency_Max, interpreted as a Blood Moon every 10 to 18 in-game days. Those numbers are not confirmed against a current official configuration file and may differ by game version, preset, or an existing world. Check your server’s actual values before treating them as defaults.
How to change the settings on a hosted server
The control-panel names differ by provider, but the safe sequence is the same. Never edit a live configuration while the server is still writing a save.

- Enable custom settings if the panel requires it. On Shockbyte, the published procedure says to choose the Custom game settings preset before changing individual values.
- Open the game-settings editor. Some panels expose Blood Moon controls directly. G-Portal places them under Basic settings. Other hosts require editing the
ServerGameSettingsfile. - Find the three keys. Locate
BloodMoonFrequency_Min,BloodMoonFrequency_Max, andBloodMoonBuff. If a panel uses friendly labels, compare the underlying key names before saving. - Enter conservative test values. For a frequent cycle, a commonly cited example is a minimum of
2and maximum of3. For the bonus, change onlyBloodMoonBuffand record the original value so you can restore it. - Save the configuration. In a text file, preserve the existing JSON structure, quotation marks, commas, and capitalization. Do not add duplicate keys.
- Start the server. Wait for the host to report that startup has completed rather than joining during the boot process.
- Join and verify. Enter the world, note the current in-game day, and observe subsequent Blood Moon timing and the character-stat change. A short test range makes timing easier to confirm, but it does not prove how the game handles every interval.
Editing a panel field
Panel editors usually write the configuration for you. Select the value field, replace the old number, and use the panel’s Save, Apply, or Save changes button. If the host shows both a preset selector and individual fields, apply the custom preset first; otherwise a later preset change may overwrite your values.

Editing ServerGameSettings
Citadel’s guide places the values in the ServerGameSettings file. The exact directory and editor vary by host, so use the file manager or configuration path supplied by that provider. Make a copy of the file before editing. Change only the three Blood Moon keys, keep numeric values numeric, and validate that the file remains well-formed before starting the server. A malformed file can prevent the server from loading its settings.
Choosing values for different play styles

Change one dimension at a time when balancing a server. If you alter frequency and buff strength together, you will not know which change caused an unexpected difficulty spike or apparent lack of effect.
What does BloodMoonBuff actually mean?
The setting’s name is clear, but its units are not. Citadel Servers lists an allowed range of 0.1 to 5.0, while G-Portal describes the value as a percentage increase. Community configuration examples commonly show 0.2 as a default, but that value is taken from a player-posted configuration and has not been checked against a current official file.

Because the sources disagree about units, treat the number as a version- and host-dependent multiplier or scale until you verify the result in your own world. Do not convert 0.2, 1.0, or 5.0 into a percentage in documentation for players unless your server version or host explicitly defines that conversion.
A practical way to test buff strength
- Record the current
BloodMoonBuffvalue and the character or combat statistic you intend to observe. - Stop the server and make a small change rather than jumping directly to the top of the reported range.
- Restart, trigger or wait for a Blood Moon, and compare the displayed or measured effect with the pre-change value.
- Restore the original value if the result is unclear, then test again with only one variable changed.
This confirms what your installed version does without assuming that another host’s percentage wording applies to your server.

The old preset overwrote the new values
If you changed individual fields and then selected a standard preset, the preset may have replaced them. On hosts that provide it, select Custom game settings first, save the fields, and restart from the fully saved configuration.

The server was not completely stopped
Editing while the process is running can leave the active instance using its in-memory values or overwrite your edits during shutdown. Stop it, wait for an offline status, edit, save, and only then start it again.
You changed the wrong file or key
Verify the spelling and capitalization of all three names. A panel may show a friendly label while writing to a different field, and a host can maintain separate settings for different worlds or instances. Reopen the editor after saving to see whether the value persisted.
The current version uses different labels
Several published guides are old, and menu labels or file names may differ in the current release. Use the key names as a reference, but follow the navigation and file path shown by your host’s current interface. If a key is absent, do not invent a new section: ask the host which configuration file and schema the current server build uses.
The world may have retained old behavior
One player reported that some settings applied only to newly created worlds. This is an anecdote, not a confirmed rule. Before deleting anything, back up the world and test the changed settings on a new disposable world if your host permits it. Keep the original world intact until you know whether the setting is world-bound.

A non-default value may suppress Blood Moons
Another player reported that using any non-default setting removed Blood Moons entirely. This report has not been confirmed as a general bug, but it is a useful diagnostic clue: if your event disappears after an edit, restore the previous values, restart, and test again. Compare one setting at a time rather than assuming the frequency range alone is responsible.
How to verify timing without misreading the cycle
- Write down the in-game day on which a Blood Moon occurs.
- Use the same world and character for each test.
- Observe more than one interval; a single long gap does not establish the configured maximum.
- Record the exact minimum and maximum values alongside each observation.
- Distinguish in-game days from real-world elapsed time. The settings are described in terms of the game’s day cycle.
If a 2–3 configuration produces no event after several expected in-game days, first confirm that the server actually loaded the values, then test the original configuration. Do not infer that the settings are percentage values or that the world is permanently broken from one observation.
Safety checklist before changing a live world
- Back up the world and configuration file.
- Stop the server and wait for an offline state.
- Record the original values of all three keys.
- Enable the custom-settings preset before editing, when the host requires it.
- Change one setting group at a time.
- Save, restart, and reopen the editor to confirm persistence.
- Tell players that event timing and bonus strength may change after the restart.
- If behavior is abnormal, restore the recorded values before attempting a larger experiment.
What is and is not established
The key names and the general stop-edit-save-restart workflow are consistent across the secondary guides identified for this topic. The exact interpretation of the random interval, the percentage meaning of BloodMoonBuff, the reported defaults, and whether some changes require a new world are less certain. No current official Stunlock Studios configuration reference was located for these fields, so host documentation and in-game verification should take precedence over an old guide or community post.
