How to Build a Reveal Search Bar: CSS-Only and Click-to-Open Options

A reveal search bar can expand with CSS or open as a JavaScript-controlled header panel. Learn what to verify—and why the available sources do not confirm V11's code or license.

A reveal search bar keeps the header compact until someone activates the search control. You can expand a field with CSS on hover or focus, or use JavaScript to open a larger responsive panel on click. The visual effect is separate from search itself: the form still needs a destination and a named query field.

The available material does not establish which design, code, dependencies, or license belongs to the specifically named V11 snippet. The examples below are references for the interaction pattern, not verified V11 implementation details.

Choose how the search field should appear

Start with the behavior your header needs. A compact field that grows in place can often be handled with CSS; a panel that opens and closes as a distinct interface may need JavaScript.

Approach What it does Trade-offs
CSS-only expansion PROWARE describes a field that expands on tap or hover, and also responds to hover, focus, or valid input. Its example uses HTML and CSS without JavaScript: CSS: Expanding Search Bar. Fewer dependencies for the reveal. Verify keyboard focus, touch operation, reduced-motion preferences, narrow layouts, and actual form submission on your site.
JavaScript-controlled panel Solodev’s example opens a search panel on click, closes it after clicks outside the control or form, and distinguishes mobile and desktop behavior: How to Expand Your Site Search on Click. Offers more control over panel state and responsive behavior, but adds code and dependencies. The sample lists Bootstrap 4.4.1, Font Awesome 4.7.0, jQuery 3.4.1, and Popper 1.16.0; those are the example’s versions, not a recommendation for a new build.

What the V11 label does—and does not—confirm

The exact V11 page was not established by the available sources, so its particular markup, interaction, dependencies, license, and release details cannot be confirmed. A related Colorlib page describes V02 as a free animated search bar whose icon rotates on hover and reveals the field. That page lists a January 18, 2021 post date, Rok Krivec as author, Colorlib as template author, a release entry of 2022, and a CC BY 3.0 license: Search Form/Bar V02. These are V02 details, not V11 metadata. A search-result description of Colorlib V15 likewise does not verify V11’s implementation or terms.

Make the form search your site

Showing or hiding an input does not define where a query is sent. PROWARE’s example submits to Bing; for a production site, set the form action to your own search endpoint and give the input the parameter name that endpoint expects. Confirm the resulting URL or request contains the user’s query and that submitting works whether the field is expanded or not.

  • Set the form’s destination to the site’s actual search route.
  • Use the query-field name required by that route; a visually correct input without the expected name may submit no usable query.
  • Test submission with a representative search term, then confirm the site displays results rather than an error or an unrelated page.

Check interaction, layout, and maintenance

Neither cited example establishes usability-test results or a definitive accessibility assessment. Test the implementation in the header and browsers where it will run instead of assuming that an animation or click handler is accessible by default.

  • Keyboard: Tab to the control, activate it, reach the input, type a query, and submit. Make the open state visible and ensure focus does not disappear when the field expands.
  • Touch: Do not rely on hover as the only way to reveal the input. Confirm that a tap can open it and that the target is practical on a small screen.
  • Motion: Check that the transition remains usable when reduced motion is requested.
  • Responsive layout: Test whether expansion overlays content or pushes it aside, and ensure the field and close behavior work at narrow widths.
  • Panel state: For a click-controlled panel, test opening, closing, outside clicks, and the mobile/desktop distinction. Decide what should happen after search submission.
  • Dependencies: Review any external libraries in a sample before adopting them. Keep only what the implementation needs and account for updates in your site’s maintenance.
