In OBS Studio, create a VLC Video Source, add the song files you have permission to stream, then enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast, run a short test, and verify YouTube reports an active incoming stream before relying on it. A shuffled playlist automates playback; it does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting or clear music rights.
What you need before setting up the rotation
- OBS Studio installed on the computer that will encode and send the live feed.
- VLC Media Player installed as well. OBS’s VLC playlist source is available when VLC is installed. OBS Media Sources documentation describes the source and its playlist controls.
- A prepared collection of audio or audio-video files whose composition and specific recording you are authorized to use for this platform, territory, and type of stream.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a broadcast configured in YouTube Studio.
OBS documents common media formats for its Media Source, but the cited documentation does not establish a best format or playlist length for devotional programming. Test your actual files and output rather than assuming every file will behave the same way.

Build the shuffled, repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC and open OBS. If VLC Video Source is missing from OBS, install VLC Media Player and reopen OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video Source. Name it, then confirm.
- Add your media files. In the source properties, add the audio or audio-video files you want in the rotation. Review the list for missing files and confirm that each item is cleared for the intended use.
- Enable random order. Select Shuffle Playlist. OBS describes this as randomizing the files rather than playing them in list order.
- Enable repeat playback. Select Loop Playlist. OBS says this restarts the source when it runs out of files, so playback can continue through the playlist and begin again.
- Confirm the source is part of your live scene. Check that the source is visible or audible as intended in the OBS preview and that the scene you plan to stream is selected.
OBS’s documentation does not promise that shuffle prevents a track from repeating before every other track has played. If strict non-repetition matters, do not advertise that behavior based on the shuffle setting alone.

YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the viewer-facing event or video—from the stream, the incoming audio-video feed sent by an encoder such as OBS. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams also describes a 24/7 use case where the incoming stream continues while a broadcast is live.

- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Set its title, visibility, and other details there. Use the current YouTube Studio labels and prompts for your account.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
- Start with a test, not a long unattended run. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing, and its Auto-Configuration Wizard considers available hardware resources and network conditions. A short test with your playlist and intended scene can reveal problems before a continuous broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s status. Follow YouTube Studio’s prompts to start the broadcast, then confirm the stream status is active. Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide identifies active status as an indication that the encoder is reaching YouTube.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Confirm that the live video has the expected picture and audio, and that the playlist advances and repeats as intended.
The cited setup guidance does not establish the current duration or archive constraints for every YouTube broadcast configuration. Check the requirements shown in your account for the specific broadcast rather than assuming a particular archive or maximum duration.
Clear the music before you go live
A song’s devotional or religious subject does not make it free to stream. Rights can apply separately to the musical composition and to the particular sound recording. Confirm that your permission covers the works and recordings in the playlist, YouTube, the relevant territories, and continuous live use.

YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content from another live broadcast. If YouTube detects licensed material, the stream may still be interrupted unless the rights owner has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Obtain any required allowlisting directly from the relevant rights owner; permission to use a work does not itself establish that the channel is allowlisted.
For a limited example, CCLI’s Copyright Matters guide discusses UK church licensing: it describes Streaming and Streaming Plus licences for live-streaming or uploading services, with Streaming Plus including song recordings. It also describes an additional PRS for Music LOML for a church website or a platform other than YouTube and Facebook. Those terms are specific to the territory and licences described. Verify the exact repertoire, account, platform, and territory with CCLI or the applicable rights body; this example is not universal legal advice or confirmation that a particular song is covered.

Plan for interruptions and routine checks
A playlist can keep media moving inside OBS, but the live feed still depends on the encoder, the computer, the network connection, and YouTube accepting the stream. The cited documentation covers status checks and platform enforcement; it does not guarantee uptime or specify a complete recovery plan for this particular setup.
- Before leaving the stream unattended, verify the active status in YouTube Studio and check the public-facing playback.
- Decide who will notice a stopped or interrupted stream and who can restart OBS or address a network or computer problem.
- Check for YouTube copyright notices or interruptions and resolve rights or allowlisting issues with the relevant rights owner.
- Re-test after changing the playlist, scene, encoder connection, or broadcast setup.
