What the $18.50 estimate includes—and leaves out
Google Cloud lists its g1-small at $0.0257 per hour on demand. Multiplying that rate by 720 hours, a 30-day planning month, gives $18.504, or about $18.50, for compute. The provider notes that pricing depends on region and zone, so check the price for the configuration you would actually deploy.

First choose the architecture
One encoder VM sends one stream to YouTube
In the usual cloud-hosted channel setup, an encoder on a VM sends a single live ingest stream to YouTube. YouTube then handles viewer-facing versions: its Help guidance says, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” You are not sending a separate copy from your VM to every viewer, so do not estimate VM bandwidth by multiplying the stream bitrate by the audience size. Managed streaming and delivery is a different bill
A service that encodes, packages and independently distributes video to viewers has a different cost structure. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment example estimates $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers: $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for CloudFront distribution of 791 GB. AWS bases that illustration on viewers consuming the highest bitrate and on stated service and regional assumptions. Set the stream profile before sizing the VM
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate and the content being encoded affect the workload. A static artwork background with audio may demand different processing from animated visuals or high-resolution motion video. Record the actual target profile and test it on the intended VM before treating a low compute estimate as a viable operating plan.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
- H.264 at 720p30: YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 3 Mbps.
- H.264 at 1080p30: YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps.
- Encoding: YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Validation: Test before going live and monitor stream health. These are encoder settings, not a complete VM specification.

Build a realistic monthly estimate
- Choose the output profile and media pipeline. Specify whether the stream is static artwork plus audio or includes motion, along with resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.
- Price a VM that can handle that workload. The g1-small calculation is a starting compute example, not a recommendation. Region, zone and workload suitability matter.
- Add other billable resources. Account for disk and any additional resources, taxes, support and redundancy your design requires. The $18.50 figure does not include them.
- Check the actual traffic route. Google Cloud lists VM-to-YouTube transfer as no charge; do not assume the same treatment applies to unrelated egress or a separate viewer-delivery service.
- Trial the configuration and monitor it. Verify that the encoder sustains the selected profile and that YouTube reports a healthy ingest before relying on it for continuous programming.
AWS Lightsail’s official pricing page advertises bundles from $7, but that headline alone does not establish which plan suits this encoder workload or provide enough context to compare included resources and transfer allowance.
