A RAG chatbot built with Java Spring Boot and Next.js has two distinct jobs: the Spring Boot backend retrieves relevant material and asks a language model to answer with it, while the Next.js frontend presents the conversation and sends questions to the backend. The available project details do not specify its endpoint, payloads, authentication, streaming, or deployment, so those implementation specifics cannot be stated as facts here. This guide explains the architecture and the Spring AI building blocks without inventing an application contract.
How does a Spring Boot and Next.js RAG chatbot work?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) gives a model relevant information from an external collection at question time. Instead of relying only on what the model learned during training, the application searches its own indexed material and includes useful matches in the model request.

The system has two paths: ingestion prepares and indexes material in advance; question answering retrieves from that index for each user query. A vector store is one common backing for semantic retrieval, but it is not the only architectural choice. Spring AI provides portable APIs for chat models, embeddings, and vector stores, alongside a fluent ChatClient, Advisors, tool calling, and Spring Boot starters. Provider and database integrations vary, so portability does not mean every provider has identical features or operational requirements. See the Spring AI API reference and the Spring AI project page.
Ingestion: prepare documents for retrieval
Ingestion reads source material, optionally transforms or splits it, creates embeddings, and persists the resulting content and metadata in a vector store. The source corpus and processing choices determine what the chatbot can retrieve. Spring AI’s ETL framework offers pluggable readers and integrations; the Spring AI 1.0 GA announcement lists possible sources including local files, web pages, GitHub, S3, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, Kafka, MongoDB, and JDBC-compatible databases. These are framework options, not evidence that a particular application uses all—or any—of them. The announcement is dated May 20, 2025.

Question answering: retrieve, then generate
At query time, the backend receives a question, searches the indexed material, and supplies selected context to the model before returning an answer. Spring AI’s documented QuestionAnswerAdvisor queries a VectorStore for documents related to the user’s question and appends retrieved context to the model prompt. Spring AI also supports modular RAG components as well as ready-made Advisor flows; the RAG reference describes these approaches.
How do I build a RAG chatbot with Spring Boot?
Build the backend around the two paths above, and make the choices that shape retrieval explicit. The framework documentation establishes available capabilities, but it does not establish the dependencies or code paths used by a particular project. A reproducible implementation should pin its Spring AI version in the build file and use dependency coordinates, starter names, and API examples that match that version.

Make retrieval behavior deliberate
Relevant documents are not guaranteed merely because the application uses embeddings or RAG. Retrieval depends on the query and on controls such as result count, similarity threshold, and metadata filters. Spring AI’s documented retriever supports these controls. Choose them to fit the corpus and the question-answering task, then decide how the application should behave when there are no useful matches. Do not describe that fallback as implemented unless the application actually defines it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Result count: A top-k limit controls how many matches are returned; more context is not automatically better.
- Similarity threshold: A cutoff can filter out weak matches, but its usefulness depends on the embedding and corpus.
- Metadata filtering: Filters can constrain retrieval to records with relevant attributes when the indexed metadata supports that distinction.
- No useful results: Define whether the application asks the model to answer without retrieved context, declines to answer, or requests clarification. RAG alone does not guarantee grounded or accurate answers.
Connect Spring AI to a vector store
Use Spring AI’s vector-store abstraction to integrate an available provider, then verify the chosen store’s filtering and operational features against the application’s requirements. The API reference describes the framework surface; it does not prove which database, embedding model, chat model, or starter this project has selected. Treat those as explicit build and configuration decisions rather than assuming a default integration.

Keep versioned examples consistent
Spring AI 1.0 GA was announced on May 20, 2025, while the current RAG reference identified in the documentation search is for Spring AI 2.0.1. Those are different version contexts, not interchangeable code targets. Pin the version your build actually uses, and consult documentation for that version before copying dependency coordinates or API snippets. Do not mix an older tutorial’s APIs with current reference examples without checking compatibility.
How do I build a chatbot UI with Next.js?
The frontend’s job is to collect a question, send it to the backend, and render the response and conversation state. Spring AI documentation does not define how a Next.js application communicates with a Spring Boot service. For a real implementation walkthrough, document the actual route or endpoint, request and response shapes, authentication behavior, error handling, loading state, and whether responses stream or arrive as a complete result. None of those details can be inferred from the Spring framework references, so they should not be presented as features of this project without implementation evidence.

What this architecture does—and does not—establish
The pattern explains how external documents can be retrieved and included in a model request, and Spring AI provides reusable abstractions for the model, vector store, and RAG flow. It does not by itself establish which corpus is indexed, how the application is secured or deployed, what transport connects the two interfaces, or how fast or accurate the system is. Those claims require details or measurements from the actual application; no performance comparison is established here.
