How to Build a Python Company-Enrichment Workflow from a Domain

A domain-based company profile pipeline should fetch relevant pages, extract only supported facts into a schema, validate values in Python, and retain evidence for every field.

You can enrich a company from a domain by fetching relevant pages from its website, asking an LLM to extract only information supported by those pages, and validating and storing each result with its source. The key safeguard is to treat the model’s output as extracted data—not verified truth. A domain can identify a starting point, but it cannot guarantee a complete or current company profile.

What a domain-based enrichment workflow can—and cannot—do

A website may expose a company name, description, industry clues, contact details, address, and social profiles. It may not expose employee count, revenue, legal name, or other firmographic fields. Missing information should remain unknown rather than being filled in by a model’s guess.

A practical pipeline has five stages: normalize the domain, retrieve relevant pages, extract into a fixed schema, validate the results in Python, and store each value with evidence and a timestamp. This approach is useful when you need a tailored profile or want control over provenance. It is not a guarantee of coverage, accuracy, or freshness.

1. Normalize the domain and decide what to fetch

Accept a domain as input, then normalize it before constructing a URL: trim whitespace, handle an optional scheme and trailing slash, and validate that the result is a plausible hostname. Reject malformed inputs rather than blindly passing them to a fetcher. Construct an HTTPS URL, follow redirects deliberately, and record the final URL reached so you can distinguish the submitted domain from the site that served the content.

Plan for common failures. A domain may be parked, unavailable, redirected to an unrelated destination, or serve pages that a basic HTTP fetch cannot read because content is rendered with JavaScript. Set explicit outcomes for these cases—such as failed, parked, redirected, or unsupported—rather than returning an apparently complete profile from an error page. A browser-capable fetcher or crawler may be needed for JavaScript-heavy sites.

2. Retrieve relevant pages, not just the homepage

The homepage is a useful starting point, but company details are often on separate pages. A vendor-authored workflow describes fetching the homepage, About and Contact pages, and relevant links from the footer. Its example uses Firecrawl for website content retrieval; that is one implementation option, not a requirement. See CompanyEnrich’s Python and LLM workflow.

Keep each page’s text paired with its URL. That pairing lets you trace a phone number or description to the page that supplied it, instead of losing provenance when multiple pages are combined. Avoid sending an unnecessarily large or irrelevant site dump to the model: select pages likely to contain company information and retain their retrieval status.

3. Extract into a typed schema with evidence

Define the fields your application actually needs. A modest profile might include company name, domain, description, industry, phone, email, address, and social profile URLs. Make absent or unsupported values explicitly nullable; do not ask the model to complete a profile from general knowledge. Include evidence for each extracted value, such as the source page URL and a short supporting snippet.

OpenAI’s Structured Outputs documentation describes constraining model responses to a supplied JSON Schema, and documents Python support through Pydantic. This helps ensure the response follows the requested shape; it does not establish that the values are factually correct. See the Structured Outputs guide and the Structured Outputs announcement.

A prompt should make the evidence rule unambiguous: extract only what is supported by the supplied page content, use null or an explicit unknown when a field is absent, and return evidence tied to the relevant page. If two pages disagree, preserve the conflict for review instead of silently choosing the more plausible value.

4. Validate the response in ordinary Python

Schema-constrained output is a useful first check, but it is not a substitute for application-level validation. The workflow article also warns that structured responses need validation. Check both whether a value has a usable format and whether its evidence supports the claim.

  • Domain and URL: normalize the domain consistently, check that social profile values are URLs, and avoid accepting unrelated destinations as company profiles.
  • Email and phone: run format checks and normalize consistently where appropriate. A string that parses as an email address or phone number is not proof that it belongs to the company or is still active.
  • Required fields: enforce only the fields your downstream use genuinely requires. Represent missing values as missing, not as invented defaults.
  • Evidence: confirm that each non-null value has a relevant page URL and supporting content. A plausible address or company description is not verified merely because it passes validation.
  • Conflicts: preserve competing values and mark them for review or apply a documented rule, such as preferring a dedicated Contact page over an older footer entry.

5. Store provenance and define refresh behavior

For each field, store the extracted value alongside its evidence URL or snippet, retrieval timestamp, and validation state. This makes it possible to review why a value was accepted and whether it may be stale. Keep the state meaningful—for example, extracted and format-checked is not the same as independently verified.

Decide how and when records are refreshed, and what happens when a new crawl conflicts with an existing value. A refresh policy might retain the prior value and mark a conflict for review rather than overwrite it automatically. The right policy depends on how the profile will be used; the workflow itself does not make a value current simply by extracting it.

Build a custom pipeline or use an enrichment API?

A custom pipeline gives you control over which pages are fetched, what the model extracts, and how evidence is stored. A managed enrichment API may be preferable when you need broader company records or want a provider to handle more of the lookup process. The choice should be made against your requirements, not an assumed accuracy or cost advantage.

Consideration Custom Python and LLM pipeline Dedicated enrichment API
Field coverage You choose fields and sources; website content may not contain the data you need. Check the provider’s documented fields and coverage for your target companies.
Source transparency You can retain page URLs and snippets as evidence. Confirm what source-level provenance the provider returns.
Freshness You set retrieval and refresh cadence. Check the provider’s update cadence and what freshness information is exposed.
Missing or conflicting data You define null handling, conflict rules, and review paths. Verify how missing fields and conflicting records are represented.
Throughput and cost Estimate fetching, model, storage, and maintenance costs at your expected volume. Compare the provider’s current pricing and throughput limits at your expected volume.
Privacy and operations Review the data processing terms for each service you use and maintain the pipeline. Review the provider’s data-processing terms, integration effort, and operational dependencies.

As a concrete vendor-documented example, CompanyEnrich’s domain lookup reference describes a preferred endpoint at /companies/enrich. It lists fields including name, domain, legal name, industry, employee range, revenue range, description, keywords, technologies, subsidiaries, and founded year. The reference states a cost of 1 credit per call and an optional workforce expansion at 5 credits per company. It also says that with waitForEnrichment=false, an uncached company can return a 404 without charging credits while enrichment is scheduled for a later request. These are vendor-stated terms, not an independent coverage assessment; check the API reference for current behavior and terms.

The available documentation does not establish an independent benchmark showing that a custom pipeline or a particular provider is universally more accurate or cheaper. Compare coverage, freshness, provenance, failure handling, expected-volume cost, privacy terms, and maintenance effort for your own use case.

What to verify before deploying

Permissions to retrieve site content, privacy obligations, and provider data-processing requirements depend on the sites, fields, jurisdictions, and intended use involved. The implementation guidance cited here does not settle those questions for a particular deployment. Review the applicable site terms and obtain jurisdiction- and provider-specific guidance before using the pipeline in a production process.
