You can keep AI prompts on your home network by running the model on a computer you control and connecting it to a self-hosted chat interface. The key is to verify the entire route: a local interface can also connect to hosted AI services, so installing it alone does not make your setup private.
A practical system has three parts: a host computer with enough memory and storage for your chosen workload, an inference server that runs the model, and a browser interface for household users. The right hardware depends on model size, context length, speed expectations, and how many people will use it—not on a universal minimum specification.

What a private home AI server consists of
- Host: A computer that stays powered and reachable when needed. It supplies processing, memory, and storage.
- Inference server: Software that loads a model and answers requests. Ollama is one option.
- Chat interface: A browser-based front end such as Open WebUI, which can connect to local model servers or hosted providers.
For local inference, the model must run on the host or another machine on your household network. If the interface sends prompts to a hosted provider, those prompts leave that boundary even though the interface itself may be self-hosted. Open WebUI documents both local and hosted connections in its quick-start guide.
Choose the workload before the hardware
Start by listing the tasks the household expects the server to handle, then estimate model size, context length, number of simultaneous users, and acceptable response time. These determine the memory and performance you need. NVIDIA’s model guidance recommends considering target VRAM and performance requirements, while backend choice also depends on operating system, model format, GPU architecture and memory, API needs, and throughput target. That is vendor selection guidance, not an independent comparison of hardware.

- Memory: Check usable GPU memory or unified memory against the model and context you intend to run. A model that fits may still respond too slowly for your expectations.
- Acceleration: A compatible GPU can accelerate inference, but support depends on the model runtime and the way it is deployed. Some models can run on a CPU; there is no evidence here for a universal minimum or speed promise.
- Storage: Allow room for model files, application data, and backups. Model downloads can be substantial and tags or sizes may change.
- Household constraints: Compare noise, power draw, physical size, upgrade options, and total cost for the actual candidate systems you are considering.
NVIDIA’s playbook lists DGX Spark with 128 GB of unified memory as one supported example, not as a requirement or a best-value recommendation for a home server. It estimates about 7 GB for its container image, about 15 GB for gpt-oss:20b, and about 25 GB for qwen3.6:latest; these are examples on that playbook, and model tags and download sizes can change. The same page estimates setup at 15–20 minutes including downloads, depending on internet speed. See the NVIDIA setup playbook for its current prerequisites.
Install the model server and browser interface
For a documented beginner route, NVIDIA’s playbook uses an Open WebUI container with Ollama integrated. It requires a networked, reachable platform, Docker, a browser, and internet access to download the image and model. Open WebUI says Docker is officially supported and recommended for most users; Python can suit low-resource or manual setups, while Kubernetes is intended for orchestration and scaling. Its image options include :main, :slim, :cuda, and :ollama. The documentation reports compressed Linux/amd64 image sizes checked September 28, 2026: about 176 MB for :slim and about 1.66 GB for :main. Sizes vary by build and architecture. The slim image omits bundled machine-learning and document-processing dependencies, so bundled features such as knowledge search and voice require external services when those dependencies are absent. Check the Open WebUI quick start for current installation choices.
Make sure the GPU is available to the model runtime
A GPU-enabled Open WebUI image does not automatically give Ollama GPU access. Open WebUI’s :cuda image can move Open WebUI’s own embedding, reranking, and Whisper speech models onto a GPU. The Ollama model uses a GPU only if the Ollama container or service can access the device through the appropriate hardware and runtime configuration. Follow the current instructions for your GPU, driver, container runtime, and selected inference server; verify which component is using the accelerator.

Verify the privacy boundary before using sensitive prompts
- Identify the selected model and provider. In Open WebUI, check which model is selected and which connection or endpoint serves it.
- Confirm the endpoint is under your control. The model server should be on the host or network you control if prompts must remain at home.
- Check connected services and integrations. A hosted provider or other remote integration can change where prompts, files, or related context are processed.
- Review access and exposure. Account permissions, network access, remote access, and backups all affect who can reach stored conversations and files.
NVIDIA describes PAIR as designed for local inference, keeping prompts, files, and agent context on the home network. Its supported devices remain separate systems: PAIR can route requests among compatible local nodes, but it does not combine them into a virtual GPU. See NVIDIA’s PAIR overview. A vendor’s description of a local design does not establish that every deployment is secure; privacy depends on the complete configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep models and conversations available
Open WebUI uses persistent storage for data such as chats and settings, and its documentation warns that removing volumes can delete that data. Put model files and application data on storage sized for your intended collection. If conversations or uploaded documents matter, include them in a backup plan and know how to restore them before relying on the server.

No single answer applies to every home workload. A CPU-only machine may run some models, but the available evidence does not establish a universal minimum or comparable speed figures. A GPU is useful when the chosen model and runtime support it and its memory and performance meet your needs. Decide on the workload first, then validate the exact combination of model, memory, operating system, backend, and expected concurrency.
Compare candidate builds on the same requirements
When weighing two or more systems, compare them against the same intended use rather than relying on a model name or a single memory figure.
