1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo prevent missed security updates, build a repeatable process that can account for every in-scope asset, prioritize updates by risk, assign deployment or exception ownership, and verify the result on each affected system. NIST defines enterprise patch management as “the process of identifying, prioritizing, acquiring, installing, and verifying the installation of patches, updates, and upgrades throughout an organization” in NIST SP 800-40 Rev. 4, published April 6, 2022.
That process applies beyond employee computers: include software and firmware on servers, network devices, mobile and IoT devices, operational technology (OT), and cloud assets where your organization is responsible for updates. NIST treats patch management as preventive maintenance and recommends an enterprise strategy shaped jointly by leadership, business or mission owners, and security and technology management.

What a reliable patch management process must do
A patching program is not just a schedule or a deployment tool. It is a controlled lifecycle: discover applicable updates, decide which matter first, test and deploy them, record approved deferrals, and verify closure. A deployment job reporting “successful” is not enough if the affected asset was missing from the job, failed to restart, or did not actually reach the intended version.

1. Set scope and assign ownership
Decide which technologies and environments the process covers, including those managed by internal teams and those operated by a service provider. Patch responsibility for a cloud service, for example, can differ from responsibility for software installed on a cloud virtual machine, so state who handles each layer.
- Process owner: Accountable for the policy, workflow, risk targets, reporting, and process improvement.
- Asset or service owners: Confirm business criticality, dependencies, acceptable maintenance windows, and operational impact.
- Security and vulnerability teams: Identify exposures, assess threat activity, recommend prioritization, and monitor exceptions.
- IT, application, cloud, network, and OT teams: Validate applicability, test and deploy updates, and report outcomes.
- Change approvers and leadership: Resolve high-impact conflicts and approve exceptions at the level appropriate to the risk.
Assign a named role for every stage: inventory, update triage, testing, deployment, exception approval, validation, and reporting. For critical services, document dependencies and escalation contacts so a patch decision accounts for the service, not just the individual device.
2. Build an inventory you can patch against
Inventory is the foundation of coverage. CISA’s ransomware guidance emphasizes knowing the assets in the environment, identifying critical systems, and understanding dependencies. Reconcile records from endpoint management, vulnerability scanning, cloud and configuration systems, procurement, and service-owner registers rather than relying on one source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For each in-scope asset, keep enough information to determine whether an update applies and how to handle it:
- Unique identifier, hostname or service name, asset type, environment, and location where relevant.
- Operating system, installed software and versions, firmware, and update channel where known.
- Technical owner and business or mission owner.
- Business criticality, internet exposure, and key service or system dependencies.
- Patch status, last observed date, and any open exception or mitigation.
Define how new assets enter the inventory and how stale or retired records are removed. Compare discovery sources regularly and investigate assets found by scanners or cloud inventories but absent from the patch system. An asset missing from inventory can also disappear from patch reporting, so report inventory coverage alongside patch compliance.

3. Find applicable updates and rank them by risk
Monitor vendor security notices and vulnerability feeds, and check the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog as an input to prioritization. CISA’s catalog says organizations should use KEV as an input to their vulnerability management prioritization framework. A bulletin or vulnerability record is only a lead: match its affected products and versions against your actual inventory before assigning remediation.
Do not rely on release order or severity score alone. Combine active exploitation, internet exposure, system criticality, vulnerability severity, and the operational risk of applying the update. CISA’s FY 2025 federal metrics identify KEV, CVSS, and SSVC as possible prioritization inputs; these are inputs to a decision, not a substitute for local asset and service context.
| Priority lane | Signals to consider | Process response |
|---|---|---|
| Expedited | Known exploitation, especially on an internet-facing asset; serious exposure of a critical system. | Open an urgent response, identify affected assets and owners, set a decision and deployment path, and track any interim mitigation until verified closure. |
| Elevated | High severity, meaningful exposure, or substantial business impact, without the same confirmed exploitation urgency. | Set a risk-based target date, assess dependencies, test proportionally, and escalate if the target is at risk. |
| Routine | Applicable updates with lower assessed risk and no urgent threat signal. | Deploy through planned maintenance windows and automation where suitable; track completion and failures against the policy target. |
Define target times for each lane in policy, including how the clock starts, who can change a priority, and when overdue work escalates. There is no single deadline established here for every organization or patch. CISA’s LockBit advisory recommended patching vulnerable software and hardware within 24 to 48 hours from disclosure; that is threat-advisory guidance, not a universal SLA. CISA KEV entries or applicable directives can establish specific due dates for covered cases, while other organizations should set targets based on risk, exposure, criticality, and their own obligations.
4. Acquire and test updates proportionally
Obtain updates from the product vendor or an approved management channel, confirm they apply to the product and version, and review vendor guidance for prerequisites, known issues, and required restarts. Test in a representative environment when practical. The depth and speed of testing should reflect both the threat and the consequences of failure.
For routine IT updates
Use staged deployment where it is operationally useful: a test group, then a broader cohort, then the remaining fleet. Define success criteria such as expected version, service health, and successful restart. Establish recovery or rollback steps before broad rollout, and make clear who can pause deployment if early failures appear.

For OT and safety-critical systems
Coordinate with the system owner and vendor guidance before deployment. Account for safety, availability, equipment dependencies, and limited maintenance windows. If immediate installation is unsafe or unsupported, record the risk decision and use a time-limited mitigation rather than treating the system as out of scope.
5. Run routine and emergency deployment lanes
Routine updates should flow through a predictable calendar, approved maintenance windows, change communication, and automation where appropriate. An emergency lane is needed when active exploitation or another urgent risk cannot wait for the normal cycle. CISA notes that existing patch tools and processes can support both routine patching and rapid response.
For each deployment, record the affected asset set, update identifier, deployment window, responsible team, expected restart or service interruption, and recovery plan. Use a staged rollout when time and risk allow; for an urgent case, make the decision to accelerate or limit rollout explicit and document the reason. Monitor job failures and service health, and route failed deployments to an owner rather than letting them remain as unresolved status codes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Track exceptions and temporary mitigations
When an update cannot be applied safely or is unavailable, require an exception record rather than a silent deferral. Include the affected assets, accountable owner, reason, risk assessment, approver, compensating controls, next action, and expiry or review date. Review exceptions on a schedule and whenever exposure or threat activity changes.
CISA’s playbook guidance describes temporary measures such as limiting access, isolating an asset, disabling a service, changing firewall rules, or increasing monitoring. Choose controls that reduce the specific exposure, document how their effectiveness will be checked, and keep the affected systems on the remediation list. A mitigation is not the same as installing the patch; close the patch item only after verified installation or a formally accepted disposition under policy.

7. Verify closure on the asset
Validate that the update is installed and the asset has reached the expected state. Use a vulnerability rescan, software or configuration inventory, endpoint-management status, vendor-specific check, or another suitable method. When possible, corroborate an important remediation with more than one method. CISA’s Log4Shell mitigation guidance specifically recommends keeping an inventory of known and suspected vulnerable assets and what is done with them throughout the process, and advises using multiple verification methods where possible.
Record the result per asset, not only per deployment batch. Track success, failure, not applicable, pending restart, and approved mitigation distinctly. Reconcile the final status against the original affected-asset list; otherwise a successful deployment to most devices can conceal a missed subset. Keep evidence sufficient to support audits, incident response, and later troubleshooting.
8. Measure coverage, timeliness, and process health
Use a small set of measures that exposes gaps rather than rewarding activity volume. CISA’s FY 2025 federal metrics highlight centralized patch processes, severity-based prioritization, automation, and mean time to remediate KEVs. The measures below are practical operationalizations, not official CISA-mandated metrics for all organizations.
- Inventory coverage: Percentage of in-scope assets with an owner, product or version, and current patch status.
- Patch compliance by risk tier: Percentage of applicable updates verified by the organization’s target date.
- Time to remediate: Median and tail time from notice or identification to verified closure, especially for KEVs.
- Verification completeness: Share of affected assets with independently confirmed installation or an approved, tracked mitigation.
- Exception health: Open exceptions by age, risk, owner, and overdue review date.
- Deployment reliability: Failed or rolled-back installations and time to resolution.
Review overdue high-risk items, unexplained inventory gaps, failed deployments, and aging exceptions with the responsible owners. Use recurring failure patterns to adjust testing, maintenance windows, deployment rings, or asset discovery—not merely to produce a larger report.
