What rising prices mean for a monthly budget
Prices do not rise at the same pace in every category, and a national inflation figure cannot tell you exactly how much your household’s expenses changed. As of October 4, 2026, the latest available release was the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ August 2026 Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published September 11, 2026. It showed that, nationally, all items rose 3.4% from August 2025 to August 2026; food rose 2.7%, and food at home rose 2.2%. Those are unadjusted 12-month comparisons. Separately, the seasonally adjusted all-items index rose 0.4% from July to August 2026. BLS August 2026 CPI table

CPI measures price changes for a representative market basket; your household may spend differently or face different local prices. Use the figures for context, not as an automatic percentage to add to every line of your budget. Check your own receipts, bills, renewal notices, and local prices instead. 1. Start with monthly take-home income
Use the money that reaches your household after payroll deductions, rather than gross salary. If income varies or arrives irregularly, choose a conservative estimate that fits your circumstances and state the assumption you used. There is no single averaging method established for every household in the guidance cited here.

2. Reconstruct what you spend now
Review several months of checking-account and credit-card records. Add cash purchases from receipts or a handwritten log. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends making an “as-is” budget first: record what you really spend rather than changing amounts to match what you think you should spend. Include housing, utilities, food, transportation, health costs, debt payments, childcare or dependent support, savings, and discretionary purchases as relevant to your household. CFPB: Assess your spending
3. Include expenses that do not arrive every month
List predictable nonmonthly costs such as insurance premiums, medical expenses, school costs, seasonal needs, gifts, charitable giving, vacations, and family support. You can estimate a monthly share of an annual bill by dividing it by 12; that is a budgeting calculation, not a CFPB-prescribed rule. Keep a miscellaneous category for costs that are genuinely hard to predict. The CFPB specifically advises, “Make sure to include a ‘miscellaneous’ category.”

Choose a tracking method you can keep using
The best method is one that captures your real spending, including cash, without creating more work than you can sustain. A spreadsheet or digital tracker can help sort transactions; a notebook or budget planner can record purchases as they happen. Account records and saved receipts are free ways to get started, and the CFPB offers a spending tracker and budget worksheet. Private companies and some banks or credit unions also offer finance tools, but features, fees, and data practices vary; verify them before connecting accounts.
| Method | Cost | Effort and coverage | Privacy consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account-history review | Can use existing statements at no added cost | Useful for card and bank transactions; add cash spending from receipts or notes | No need to share account data with a separate tracking service |
| Spreadsheet or digital tracker | Varies by tool | Can organize categories; cash purchases still need to be entered | Check how the tool stores data and whether it requests account access |
| Paper notebook or budget planner | A notebook you already own can be free; planner cost varies | Requires manual entry, including cash and card purchases | Records stay with you unless you choose to share them |
For a free starting point, use the CFPB spending tracker or its monthly household budget worksheet. The worksheet’s example is an educational scenario from Summer 2022; its sample prices are not current spending recommendations. CFPB teacher guide

Update categories with your household’s current prices
Compare the amount in your existing plan with what you now pay. Check recent grocery receipts, utility bills, rent notices, transportation costs, and insurance renewals. Update each affected category based on those records rather than applying one inflation percentage across the board. BLS also publishes CPI indexes for U.S. geographic areas, but an area index remains an average, not a personalized forecast. BLS Consumer Price Index home
Keep the time period clear when comparing amounts. A renewal notice may show the new monthly charge, while a receipt may reflect only one shopping trip. If a cost changes by season or varies from month to month, use a figure that represents the pattern you expect and revisit it when you have more actual spending data.

Balance needs, planned savings, and wants
Once the “as-is” picture is complete, separate essential needs and commitments from planned savings and discretionary wants. The CFPB’s budget worksheet uses this sequence to help households see which expenses may be flexible; it does not establish a universal percentage for each category. Emergency savings and insurance can help protect future needs, but what is feasible depends on income, obligations, and household circumstances.
Recommended Free Tools
Add the categories and compare planned outflow with take-home income. If spending is higher than income, first identify the size and source of the gap. Then focus on changes that are genuinely available to you, such as adjusting a flexible purchase, comparing the cost of a recurring service, or checking eligibility for local assistance. Some households have little discretionary spending to reduce, so do not assume every shortfall can be solved by cutting wants.

Reconcile the plan at the end of the month
Compare your planned leftover with your account records and cash on hand. If the actual balance does not match, look for a missed expense, a category estimate that was too low, or a cost that arrived earlier than expected. Correct the next month’s plan based on what happened. A monthly budget is a working plan; expenses and timing will not be identical every month.
When a pay increase does not keep up with prices
A higher paycheck does not necessarily mean greater purchasing power. BLS distinguishes nominal income—the dollar amount received—from real income, which accounts for price changes. If income rises more slowly than prices, the amount it can buy may fall. CPI is useful context for this comparison, but it does not determine an individual worker’s appropriate raise or capture every household’s personal costs. BLS: Income and the Consumer Price Index
