Build a roofed, walled shelter with one closable entrance, then light the interior and nearby dark areas. The walls and roof keep approaching mobs from reaching you; lighting reduces the chance of ordinary hostile mobs spawning in dark places. A fence can add a perimeter, but nearby raised blocks may let mobs get over it in Bedrock.
Build a sealed shelter first
Choose a spot and make a compact enclosure with solid walls and a roof. Minecraft’s first-night survival guide explains that blocks between you and mobs help stop them from reaching you. A roof matters because walls alone leave an open route from above, while gaps in walls leave direct paths inside.

Leave one entrance you can close behind you, such as a door. This is a practical way to maintain the barrier between you and approaching mobs, not a guarantee against every mob or game mechanic. Close it when you are inside and check that the surrounding walls have no openings.
Light the inside and the nearby ground
Place torches or other available light sources around the interior, paying particular attention to corners and dark sections. Minecraft’s survival guide recommends torches to reduce hostile mob spawning in dark areas. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18 release notes, published in 2021, specify: “Monsters now only spawn in places where the light from blocks is 0 (sky light still prevents spawning like before).” That statement describes the Java 1.18 change; it should not be taken as a complete account of every later exception, mob, or dimension.
#1 Best Overall
- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
Light the ground immediately outside the house where practical, and inspect nearby dark spaces such as caves and tunnels. The official guidance supports lighting dark areas but does not establish one universal torch spacing for every layout. A lit interior helps prevent ordinary natural spawning under the cited rules; it does not by itself stop a mob from entering through an opening or account for every spawner, event, or version-specific mechanic.
Add a fence only after checking the terrain
A fence can make an additional barrier around your house. Minecraft’s fence guide says players and mobs cannot jump over fences unless they have Jump Boost. However, Mojang’s Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes warn that mobs can jump over a fence when standing on an adjacent slab or another sufficiently high block. Keep nearby surfaces low or leave enough separation that they cannot serve as a step over the fence. This caveat is documented for Bedrock 1.18.30.

Use the build as a short checklist
- Build solid walls and a roof around the space where you will shelter.
- Keep one closable entrance and close it when you go inside.
- Place light sources through the interior, including corners and dark sections.
- Light nearby ground where practical and look for dark caves or tunnels.
- If you add a fence, check for adjacent slabs or raised blocks that could help mobs get over it.
What changes between editions
The cited Java 1.18 notes describe a block-light spawning threshold of 0 for monsters while stating that sky light still prevents spawning as before. Bedrock 1.18.0 notes say monsters spawn only in complete darkness and that players can spawn-proof dark areas with light sources; see Mojang’s Bedrock 1.18.0 release notes. The fence warning above comes from Bedrock 1.18.30. These version-specific notes and the general first-night guide do not cover every mob, context, or later change, so use the enclosure and lighting principles rather than assuming one design is an absolute guarantee.
