If you are trying to lower translation costs in a Flutter or React app, first separate two needs: pre-translated interface text and text users submit for translation at runtime. Flutter’s ARB localization workflow is usually the right baseline for fixed app copy; a translation API is for dynamic text. For runtime requests, compare Google Cloud Translation’s metered pricing with a self-hosted service such as LibreTranslate—but include hosting and operations before calling the alternative cheaper.
Start by identifying what you actually need to translate
Count the text sent for translation in a typical month, the number of target languages for each request, and whether translations are needed before release or while the app is running. A support message translated on demand is a runtime use case. Button labels and menu text that ship with the app are usually static localization.

This distinction matters because moving every interface string through an API can add recurring usage and a network dependency where neither is necessary. Conversely, bundled translations do not solve a feature that must translate arbitrary user-submitted text. Google’s pricing and features vary by edition, model, and method, so compare the product path that matches your actual requests. Google Cloud Translation documentation
Understand Google Cloud Translation’s current cost model
Google’s pricing page lists a monthly credit covering the first 500,000 characters of Cloud Translation usage, applied collectively across Basic and Advanced usage. Above that threshold, the listed standard Neural Machine Translation text rate is $20 per million characters. The credit does not roll over. These are published figures on Google’s current pricing page, not a promise that every method or model has the same rate; check the page for the edition, operation, and model you intend to use before estimating a bill. For batch translation, Google says billable source-character volume can be multiplied by the number of target languages. Other Google Cloud resources used alongside Translation can also generate charges. Therefore, a useful estimate needs more than a count of characters typed into your app: include each target language and the exact API method. Google’s pricing details
Cloud Translation is not just an endpoint to call anonymously from a client. Google’s setup instructions require a project, API enablement, credentials, and billing configuration. Keep credentials and privileged calls on a trusted server rather than exposing secrets in a distributed mobile or browser app. Google Cloud setup guide

Use Flutter localization for shipped interface text
Flutter’s documented localization workflow uses ARB resource files and generated Dart localization code. The app declares its supported locales and localization delegates, then uses the generated localization API to display the appropriate bundled strings. This is a build-time application localization system, not a translation-service API: it does not automatically translate arbitrary text entered after release. Flutter internationalization guide
For a Flutter app, this means a practical cost reduction may be to stop sending fixed labels through a paid runtime API. Maintain reviewed translations as app resources, and reserve an API for dynamic content that genuinely needs translation. That approach also avoids making basic interface rendering depend on a live translation request.
Consider LibreTranslate for dynamic translation
LibreTranslate describes itself as a free and open-source machine-translation API and identifies Argos Translate as its engine. It can be self-hosted, which changes the billing model: a self-hosted instance does not imply a per-character vendor API charge, but the operator still pays for infrastructure and time spent deploying, maintaining, securing, and scaling the service. Its documentation describes deployment options including Docker and Kubernetes. LibreTranslate documentation Installation guide
The API accepts translation requests through a POST endpoint. An API key is required only when the particular LibreTranslate instance is configured to require one; self-hosted instances do not require a key by default. A public or hosted instance may set different requirements, so follow the configuration and policy of the instance you use. LibreTranslate API usage

Do not assume LibreTranslate supports every language pair your users need. Verify that the deployment has the relevant models and test representative text. Google’s API overview states that its service supports more than 100 language pairs; that figure is Google’s claim and should not be attributed to LibreTranslate. Google Cloud API overview

| Decision factor | Google Cloud Translation | Self-hosted LibreTranslate |
|---|---|---|
| Usage cost | Metered according to method and model, with the published monthly credit and rates described above. Batch target languages can affect billable volume. | No per-character vendor API bill is implied for a self-hosted instance; compute, deployment, maintenance, and scaling remain costs. |
| Operations | Requires a Google Cloud project, API enablement, credentials, and billing. | You operate the deployment and service; documented deployment paths include Docker and Kubernetes. |
| Static app strings | A runtime API is generally not needed for fixed interface copy. | An API does not replace Flutter’s ARB files and generated localization setup. |
| Language coverage | Google states its API overview supports more than 100 language pairs; availability varies by feature and model. | Confirm language and model availability for the specific deployment. |
| Quality and latency | Not established here for your particular text, languages, or response-time target; test your workload. | Not established here for your particular text, languages, or deployment; test the same workload. |
A fair comparison uses the same sample strings, source and target languages, request volume, and number of target languages. Measure the response time and translation suitability that matter to your users, then price the Google method you would actually call and the hosting configuration needed for LibreTranslate. Include expected uptime, scaling, monitoring, and maintenance in the self-hosted estimate. Without those assumptions and measurements, there is no defensible savings figure.

Plan the app architecture without exposing credentials
For static Flutter copy, keep translations in the app’s localization resources. For runtime translation, put provider selection and any secret-bearing credentials behind a backend you control rather than shipping a Google credential inside a Flutter binary or React bundle. The backend can route a request to Google or your own LibreTranslate instance, enforce request limits, and provide one interface to the client. The exact React integration depends on the application’s stack; no particular React library or implementation is established here.
Before switching providers, verify language coverage and test quality and latency with representative content in the actual deployment. A self-hosted service may reduce variable API charges at sufficient volume, but low traffic or operational overhead can make it a worse overall trade-off. The decision is a workload-and-operations calculation, not a conclusion that open source is automatically free or equivalent.
