A production-grade voice agent is more than a speech model behind a WebSocket. It needs a transport suited to its client, a turn detector tuned to the way people speak, explicit session lifecycle handling, and event-level observability. The Realtime API documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP, along with server and semantic voice activity detection (VAD); it does not establish one universally best transport or a universal latency target. Choose and measure for your own client, network, and workload.
What belongs in a production voice-agent architecture?
Think of the system as a sequence of observable stages, not a single request-and-response call. The client captures incoming audio and sends it over a supported realtime interface. The session applies its configured model, voice, and turn-detection behavior. The service produces output audio, which the client plays and may need to stop if the user interrupts.

This is an implementation framework, not a prescribed telemetry schema. Its purpose is to let a team distinguish a slow response from a late turn boundary, a playback issue, or an interruption that was not handled promptly.

Select WebRTC, WebSocket, or SIP according to the application’s client and connection requirements.
- Turn-end detection: track when the system considers the user’s turn complete. The VAD choice affects when a response can begin.
- Response start: record when the service begins producing a response, separately from when the user first hears it.
- Playback: record when output audio becomes available to play and when playback starts. Keep this distinct from response-generation timing.
- Interruption: record when new user speech or a client action cuts off output, and whether the output buffer is cleared.
- Configuration and errors: associate session configuration updates and errors with the session and relevant event sequence so operators can investigate failures.
For measured latency figures, publish the test environment alongside the result: network region, model or service version, audio format, client and transport, and workload. The official API reference offers qualitative latency guidance, not a comparable end-to-end benchmark or a target in milliseconds.

Which transport should you choose?
The Realtime API documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP for realtime multimodal communication. It also supports native speech-to-speech interactions as well as text, image, and audio inputs and outputs. Those capabilities establish available interfaces; they do not show that one transport is faster or more reliable for every deployment.
Start by writing down where the connection originates, what kind of client or calling environment you must support, and what your application needs to observe and control. Then test candidate transports on the actual client and network conditions. Compare response start and interruption responsiveness under the same workload rather than treating transport names as performance results.
- WebSocket: consider it when it fits the application’s client and connection requirements. Measure how it behaves in the target environment; the reference does not provide a comparative WebSocket benchmark.
- WebRTC: consider it when it fits the client and connection requirements. The documentation lists it as a supported interface, not as a universal performance winner.
- SIP: consider it when the calling environment calls for that interface. Its presence in the API documentation does not rank it against the other options.
Keep the transport decision separate from the VAD decision. A transport can affect how audio reaches the service and how output returns to the client; turn detection determines when the system treats the speaker as finished. Both can influence perceived responsiveness, and both should be tested in the intended setup.

How do server VAD and semantic VAD change turn-taking?
Server VAD detects speech boundaries from audio volume and turns off after silence. Semantic VAD uses a turn-detection model to estimate whether the person has finished speaking, dynamically setting a timeout based on that estimate. The Realtime API reference says semantic VAD may support more natural turn-taking, including when a speaker trails off, but may have higher latency.
This is a product tradeoff: a detector that waits to infer whether a thought is complete may behave differently from one that relies on silence. Evaluate the effect on both conversational feel and time to response. Do not assume that more natural turn-taking is free, or that the same setting will suit every speaking style and use case.
- Test speakers who pause briefly mid-sentence as well as those who trail off at the end of a thought.
- Measure from the end of the user’s speech to response start, and separately measure time to first audible playback.
- Test interruptions during generated audio and record whether the client or service stops playback and clears buffered output.
- When evaluating input language, the API reference says supplying it in ISO-639-1 format can improve accuracy and latency. Treat that as qualitative guidance, not a measured end-to-end improvement.
How should session configuration and updates work?
A client can send session.update to change supported session configuration fields. The server responds with session.updated, which shows the effective configuration. Treat that confirmation as the source of truth for what the session is using; do not assume a requested change took effect just because the client sent it.

Voice and model changes have lifecycle constraints and cannot be handled like ordinary configuration fields. In particular, the client reference says the voice may be changed only before audio output has occurred. Design the session setup and any transitions around those constraints rather than attempting a late change mid-response.

Which events should a production client handle?
Build the event loop around the audio response lifecycle, configuration confirmation, errors, and interruptions. The server-events reference describes output audio buffer states including started, stopped, and cleared. A cleared buffer can reflect an interruption or a client-initiated cutoff, so interpret it in context rather than treating every clear as the same failure.
- Errors: monitor and log error messages by default. The reference says most server errors are recoverable; handle them deliberately rather than treating every error as a reason to abandon the session.
- Audio buffer started and stopped: use these lifecycle signals to investigate when output begins and ends relative to response generation and playback.
- Audio buffer cleared: correlate this event with user speech, client cutoffs, and playback state to understand interruptions.
- Session updated: verify effective configuration and investigate rejected or unexpected changes.
Log enough event context to connect related activity in a session, while avoiding a telemetry design that assumes the API prescribes a complete schema. The reference recommends monitoring and logging errors, but does not define a full production observability plan.

How do you optimize latency without guessing?
First define which latency matters to the user. “End-to-end” can conceal several different waits: getting input to the service, deciding that the turn ended, beginning response generation, and starting audible playback. Interruption latency is another distinct measure: a response can start quickly yet still feel unresponsive if it keeps playing after the user speaks.
- Choose consistent start and end points. For example, measure from the end of user speech to response start, then from response start to first playback. State exactly how each timestamp is obtained.
- Record the test conditions. Include client, transport, network region, service or model version, audio format, language, and workload when reporting results.
- Vary one factor at a time. Compare turn-detection settings or transports under otherwise equivalent conditions so the cause of a change is interpretable.
- Include conversational edge cases. Test mid-sentence pauses, trailing-off speech, short turns, and interruptions while output is playing.
- Use event traces to find the slow stage. Distinguish late turn detection from slow response start, delayed playback, or failure to clear interrupted audio.
The documented latency claims are qualitative: semantic VAD may have higher latency, and supplying the input language in ISO-639-1 format can improve accuracy and latency. Neither statement gives a millisecond estimate or proves an end-to-end gain on a particular stack. Establish a baseline on the target workload before changing settings, and report measured results with their conditions rather than presenting one number as a general target.
Quick Recap
What should you validate before launch?
- Confirm that the chosen interface suits the actual client or calling environment.
- Verify the effective configuration from
session.updatedand respect voice-change timing constraints. - Exercise both speech-volume and semantic turn-taking behavior with realistic pauses and trailing speech.
- Test output start, stop, and clear handling, including both interruptions and client-initiated cutoffs.
- Confirm that errors are monitored, logged, and handled as potentially recoverable where appropriate.
- Measure response start, first playback, and interruption response separately on the deployment’s network and workload.
