Build a local AI interview coach around a repeatable practice loop: choose a question, answer it, review feedback tied to what you actually said, then retry one weak point. Start with text, make audio optional, and treat model feedback as practice guidance—not a prediction of hiring success.
Build the practice loop before adding features
A question generator alone does not coach. The useful unit is a session that preserves the question, answer, feedback, and revision so the user can act on a specific observation and compare attempts. Projects such as DeepInterview separate preparation, live interviewing, and post-session review; GrillKit demonstrates question tracks, follow-ups, recorded or dictated answers, and review pages. These are workflow examples, not evidence that their scores predict interview performance.

- Choose a prompt: let the user select a role, level, competency, or enter a question. A small curated bank is a dependable first option; a local model can suggest alternatives, with an edit control.
- Capture an answer: accept typed text first. Add optional recording later, and let users inspect and correct the transcript before it is assessed.
- Evaluate against a visible rubric: send the question, answer, and rubric to a configurable local model endpoint. Request evidence-based observations and a small number of actions.
- Continue the session: offer one focused retry and a relevant follow-up rather than ending with a score. Preserve previous attempts for comparison.
- Review and delete: keep session data local by default, explain what is stored, and provide a clear way to delete it.
Store the rubric version with each session as well as the question, answer, feedback, and retry history. That makes changes in evaluation criteria visible instead of silently comparing answers judged by different standards.

A local model server such as Ollama can provide the language-model component. Keep the model identifier and endpoint configurable so users can select a model that fits their device rather than relying on a hardcoded choice. Ollama’s API documentation says, “Structured outputs are supported by providing a JSON schema in the format parameter.” See the Ollama API documentation.

Define a compact response schema—for example, an overall observation, evidence-linked strengths, one or two improvement points, a suggested strengthening strategy, and either a practice action or follow-up question. Include an uncertainty field for an incomplete or ambiguous answer. Validate the returned JSON in application code; if it is malformed, show an error or offer a controlled retry rather than displaying broken or invented feedback.
Structured output makes the response easier to render consistently; it does not make the evaluation accurate. The model can still miss context, give generic advice, or interpret evidence incorrectly, so keep the answer visible beside the feedback and let the user challenge or revise it.
Write a rubric that rewards evidence, not polish alone
Tie criteria to the question and tell the model to point to the answer text that supports each observation. A practical behavioral-answer rubric can consider:

- Relevance: does the answer address the question asked?
- Structure and clarity: can a listener follow the situation, action, reasoning, and result?
- Specific evidence: does the answer include concrete details rather than unsupported generalities?
- Personal contribution: is the candidate’s own role clear where a team effort is described?
- Reasoning and trade-offs: does the answer explain decisions or constraints when relevant?
- Outcome or learning: is there a result, reflection, or lesson where the question calls for one?
This is a product-design rubric, not a validated scoring instrument. In the prompt, ask the model to distinguish absent evidence from evidence of poor performance, avoid inferring personality or protected characteristics, and suggest a way to strengthen the response without fabricating experience.
Scores are optional and can create false precision. If the interface uses a 1–5 or 0–100 scale, define what each level means, keep the score secondary to the explanation, and do not label it interview readiness or a probability of being hired.
Add spoken practice with visible, editable transcription
For browser recording, use the MediaRecorder API and check supported formats with MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported(); supported MIME types vary by browser. MDN documents both the recording API and its format check: MediaRecorder and isTypeSupported().

For a first voice version, transcribe after the answer is complete rather than attempting streaming captions. Showing the transcript for correction before evaluation gives the user a chance to fix recognition errors and makes clear what text the coach judged.
OpenAI’s Whisper repository documents audio-file transcription and Python usage, lists approximate VRAM requirements, and notes that speed varies with language, speaking speed, hardware, and other conditions. The figures below are model VRAM estimates, not total-system memory requirements or guarantees of performance:

Whisper’s documented command-line tool requires ffmpeg. The model table is a starting point for selection, not a substitute for testing transcription quality with the intended language, speaker, room, and hardware. Compare local speech models on those factors and runtime rather than choosing by model size alone. See the Whisper repository.

Live dialogue requires more than transcription: test turn-taking, latency, interruptions, accents, and noisy rooms on the actual target device. No general latency or accuracy target follows from the available model documentation. As a single-configuration example, DeepInterview maintainers reported a 121-second preparation/question-plan run in 2026 on an Apple M5 Pro with 24 GB, Ollama 0.32.5, qwen3:8b, Speaches/faster-whisper-small, and Kokoro. They did not benchmark turn latency, test non-English local voice, or verify other hardware. That result describes only their setup; it is not a general performance expectation.

A local interface or locally stored session does not by itself prove that every request stays on the device. Point both language-model and speech-recognition requests to local services, make hosted fallbacks opt-in rather than silent, and disclose where audio and transcripts are stored. Check telemetry and crash reporting, update checks, and configured model endpoints before claiming that no data leaves the device.

Plan for the failures users will encounter
- Bad transcription: show the transcript before scoring and allow edits; retain the original recording only according to the product’s stated storage policy.
- Invalid or generic model output: validate the schema, handle errors clearly, and keep the source answer available so the user can retry without losing work.
- Context limits: keep prompts focused and handle long answers deliberately instead of silently truncating material the feedback depends on.
- Slow or memory-heavy models: let users configure the model and explain that speed and capacity depend on the selected device and model.
- Unavailable local service: show the endpoint or connection status and ask before any hosted alternative is used.
Keep the coach honest about what it can tell a user
The peer-reviewed Conversate paper describes an interview simulator combining adaptive follow-up questions, transcript annotations, user self-reflection, and dialogic feedback that users can discuss and use to refine answers. That design supports a conversational retry loop rather than a one-way verdict; it does not establish that a particular local model improves employment outcomes. See the Conversate paper.
Present the tool as a way to practice structuring and explaining answers. The sources do not establish a validated mapping from model-generated scores to hiring outcomes or a generalizable measured learning gain for this product. A coach can help users notice gaps and rehearse revisions, but human judgment remains relevant.
Choose components by testing the intended use
There is no single best model established for every interview coach. For a speech model, compare language support, memory footprint, transcription quality on the intended speaker and room, and runtime on the target machine. For an LLM, compare adherence to the rubric, evidence-grounded feedback, structured-output reliability, context capacity, latency, memory use, and local license or redistribution terms. The cited materials describe trade-offs but do not provide a complete comparative benchmark for this use case.

The central product is software: a local model runtime and speech-recognition model. An external USB microphone may be useful for spoken practice, but it is optional; a built-in microphone may be sufficient, and no particular microphone is established as necessary.
