If an accessory shows No Response or won’t add to Apple Home, first check whether the problem affects one manufacturer or several. A one-brand failure points you toward that accessory and its maker’s app; failures across brands call for checks of Wi-Fi, your Apple device, hubs, bridges, and network software. Test Home after each step so you can tell what changed.
Apple’s support instructions call the platform Apple Home and the app the Home app; “homeOS” is not the name used in the official troubleshooting materials covered here. The steps below apply to accessories set up in Apple Home. Menus and compatibility requirements can change, so check current Apple and accessory-manufacturer instructions if your device’s setup differs.

Start by checking how many accessories are affected
- One manufacturer’s accessories fail: Start with the accessories, their firmware, and the manufacturer’s app. A shared vendor app, bridge, or accessory issue is more plausible than a problem affecting all of Apple Home.
- Accessories from several manufacturers fail: Check the Apple device and shared parts of the setup, including Wi-Fi, modem/router, home hubs, bridges, VPNs, and third-party security software.
After each troubleshooting step, check whether the accessory responds in Home. If it also fails in its manufacturer’s app, troubleshoot it with the manufacturer before treating Home as the cause.
If accessories from one manufacturer show “No Response”
- Turn on Bluetooth. On iPhone or iPad, enable Bluetooth in Settings. On Mac, enable it in System Settings.
- Restart the accessory. For a battery-powered device, remove and reinstall its batteries if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
- Check the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates. If the accessory fails there too, Apple advises that it may need to be reset. Follow the maker’s reset instructions rather than guessing at a button sequence.
- Restart third-party bridges and home hubs. Unplug each one, reconnect power, and give it time to come back online.
- If it is a third-party Thread accessory, power-cycle it and allow the network to settle. Disconnect it from power for five minutes, reconnect it, then wait ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize, as Apple instructs.
- Remove and reset the accessory only as a later step. Use the manufacturer’s instructions, then add it to Home again. Resetting may mean repeating setup.
If the accessory still will not respond, contact its manufacturer.

If accessories from several manufacturers show “No Response”
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then reopen Home. Install available system software updates and close and reopen the Home app.
- Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Put the Apple device on the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories and turn on Bluetooth. A home hub is needed for remote control when you are away from home.
- Restart affected accessories and check their firmware. Use the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates; for battery-powered accessories, restart them only as their instructions permit.
- Apply the Thread restart timing if relevant. For third-party Thread devices, disconnect power for five minutes, reconnect, and wait ten minutes for the network to stabilize.
- Restart shared network and Home equipment. Restart the modem/router, third-party bridges, home hubs, affected accessories, and the Apple device.
- Check VPN and security software. VPNs or third-party security software may interfere with network connectivity. Review their settings or temporarily disable them only if you can do so safely and understand the security trade-off.
If devices across manufacturers remain unavailable after these checks, contact Apple Support.
If you can’t add a smart-home accessory to the Home app
Apple’s setup guidance calls for an iPhone or iPad to add an accessory; use one rather than a Mac for setup. Before retrying, make sure the device is up to date, Bluetooth is enabled, and the accessory is powered on. Check its manual for extra hardware, software, or manufacturer-app setup, and verify that it supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter.

“Unable to add to home”
Check that the accessory has power, move it closer to the router during setup, and restart any third-party bridge and home hub. If that does not work, reset the accessory according to its manual and try setup again.

Some accessories do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If setup shows an incompatible-network alert, check whether your iPhone or iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi network that supports 2.4 GHz, as Apple advises. This is not a universal limitation: follow the requirements for the specific accessory.

“Accessory is not supported”
Check the manufacturer’s firmware and confirm that the model supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. The presence of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth alone does not establish Apple Home compatibility.
Matter setup and hub requirements
Requirements depend on the software and setup scenario. Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub, while recommending a hub for the best experience. Check Apple’s current instructions and the accessory maker’s requirements for your specific device and software.

Would a home hub help?
Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as devices that can be set up as home hubs. A hub matters if you need remote control away from home; it may also be relevant to the setup requirements for a particular accessory. It is not a general fix for a device without power, an accessory that fails in its own manufacturer’s app, missing firmware, or incompatibility. Confirm your setup’s requirements before buying or resetting equipment.
When replacing an accessory or bridge
Compare the requirements of the specific model rather than assuming a generic hub, router, or repeater will solve the problem. Check for:
