You can build a knowledge-base chatbot with OpenClaw by installing a retrieval skill, connecting it to an index such as a managed service, ChromaDB, or RAGFlow, loading your documents, and testing questions against the indexed content. OpenClaw’s official skills documentation explains how skills are packaged and installed, but it does not provide an official end-to-end RAG tutorial. Retrieval skills and their setup instructions are therefore third-party and can change.

What an OpenClaw knowledge-base chatbot actually is
An OpenClaw knowledge-base chatbot is an agent that retrieves relevant passages from your documents before generating an answer. The retrieval step is commonly called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Instead of asking a language model to remember your policies, manuals or articles, the agent searches an index at question time and supplies matching excerpts to the model.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The practical pipeline has four separate parts:
- OpenClaw and a model provider: OpenClaw receives messages and calls the model that writes responses.
- A skill: a folder containing a
SKILL.mdfile and any scripts or configuration needed to perform retrieval. - A retrieval backend: a managed index, a local ChromaDB store, or a RAGFlow server in the routes documented by current community and vendor material.
- Content and evaluation: documents are ingested with useful metadata, then realistic questions are used to verify answers and citations.
Without the skill and an index, a normal OpenClaw agent is not automatically a chatbot that knows your private documents.
Official OpenClaw support versus third-party RAG setup
The official OpenClaw documentation describes the skill format, where skills are loaded from, and how to install them. It does not document a complete, official knowledge-base or RAG implementation. Guides that add document indexing, semantic search or a “knowledge” configuration are community or vendor instructions, not core OpenClaw guarantees.

One tutorial claims that a built-in knowledge skill can be configured in openclaw.json with a workspace path and chunk settings. That claim is not confirmed by the official documentation reviewed for this guide, so do not build a production system around it without checking the current OpenClaw release and the skill’s own SKILL.md.
Skill names, ClawHub commands and configuration fields are volatile. Check the installed skill’s documentation and run the current CLI help before adapting any command shown below.
OpenClaw RAG setup: prerequisites
Prepare these items before installing a retrieval skill:
- A working OpenClaw installation and Gateway.
- A model provider configured in OpenClaw. Your provider must be able to answer the context supplied by the retrieval skill.
- A workspace where the agent can read the files or environment variables required by the selected backend.
- A representative document set: FAQs, manuals, policies, catalog data, support transcripts or other material the bot is allowed to use.
- Credentials for any hosted index or RAGFlow API, stored outside documents and excluded from chat logs.
- A test channel. Telegram pairing is one option; a dedicated Slack channel or topic keeps experiments away from normal conversations.
Start with a small, clean sample rather than indexing an entire archive. You need to know which files should be authoritative before troubleshooting retrieval.
Step 1: install OpenClaw and connect a model
Use the current OpenClaw installation instructions for your operating system, then configure a model provider in the Gateway. A third-party installation walkthrough also covers pairing Telegram for an initial chat, but the channel is optional; you can test through another connected interface.
Confirm the basic agent works before adding RAG:
- The Gateway starts without configuration errors.
- The agent responds to a simple question that does not require private documents.
- The account or API key used by the model provider is valid and has the required quota.
- The workspace path you intend to index is readable by the OpenClaw process.
Fixing model or Gateway problems first prevents you from mistaking a transport failure for a retrieval failure.

openclaw skills --help
openclaw skills install <owner>/<slug>
Do not substitute an arbitrary slug. Open the ClawHub listing, read the skill’s SKILL.md, and verify its required environment variables, external services, file permissions and supported OpenClaw versions. Treat a skill as executable software: inspect scripts and pin or review updates before allowing it to read sensitive material.
Install from Git or a local directory
If the author distributes a repository or folder instead of a native ClawHub package, place the skill in the documented location and follow that repository’s setup steps. Keep the source under version control so you can review changes and roll back a broken update.
Install through the Gateway UI
The Gateway interface can create a skill, import a SKILL.md file or ZIP bundle, or add a ClawHub skill from Plugins and then Skills. After importing, open the skill’s files and configuration page, confirm its status, and restart or reload the Gateway if the interface requests it.

OpenClaw searches skill locations in precedence order: workspace skills, project-agent skills, personal-agent skills, managed skills and bundled skills. If two locations contain the same skill name, the higher-precedence copy can mask the lower one. When behavior appears inconsistent, list every copy and remove or rename obsolete duplicates before changing prompts.
Step 3: choose a retrieval backend
The documented routes differ mainly in where vectors and source text live and who maintains the indexing service.
| Route | Where documents and index live | Operational work | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor-managed indexing | A provider-managed index activated by its OpenClaw skill | Lowest infrastructure burden; the provider claims no separate vector database is needed | Teams that want a managed service and accept vendor control over indexing | The no-database statement is a vendor claim; review retention, isolation, pricing and export terms yourself |
| ChromaDB skill | Local ChromaDB in your OpenClaw workspace | Install and maintain ChromaDB, storage, backups and upgrades | Personal projects or private deployments that need local semantic search | The community skill’s actual commands and supported OpenClaw versions can change |
| RAGFlow skill | A running RAGFlow instance reached through its API | Operate or obtain a RAGFlow server and manage an API key | Teams already using RAGFlow’s ingestion and retrieval controls | Connection details belong in the skill’s environment file, not in prompts or documents |
Managed indexing route
A vendor guide describes installing a ClawHub skill with:
npx clawhub@latest install fast-io
It then says to enable Intelligence Mode in the workspace settings, which triggers indexing without an external vector database. This is a vendor-supplied workflow, not an OpenClaw core feature. Verify the current skill name, setting label, data residency, deletion process and access controls before uploading confidential files.

Local ChromaDB route
A community ClawHub skill indexes chat sessions, workspace code, documentation and skills for semantic search. Its setup instructions install ChromaDB in the workspace with:
pip3 install chromadb
Use an isolated virtual environment where possible, record the installed version, and give the OpenClaw process access only to the ChromaDB directory it needs. Plan backups: a local index is not a backup of the original documents, and rebuilding embeddings can take time.
RAGFlow route
A separate ClawHub skill connects OpenClaw to RAGFlow. Its documented pattern is to put the RAGFlow API URL and key in the skill’s .env file, then restart the OpenClaw Gateway. Keep that file out of Git and restrict its permissions. Test the endpoint from the same host or network where the Gateway runs; a valid key cannot help if the API URL is unreachable.
Step 4: organise documents for retrieval
Retrieval quality depends more on source structure and metadata than on a clever final prompt. A community recipe demonstrates ingesting articles, social posts, YouTube transcripts and PDFs, then attaching metadata. Adapt that pattern to your material:
- Stable identifier: a document ID or canonical URL.
- Title and type: for example, “Refund policy” and “policy”.
- Publication or revision date: essential when policies change.
- Owner and authority: identify which team or system maintains the source.
- Product, region or audience: prevent a global answer from being returned for a regional question.
- Access label: mark content that should not be shown to every user.
Prefer short, structured sections with descriptive headings over a single long export. Keep tables, numbered procedures and field names intact when converting files to text. Remove navigation, duplicated footers and boilerplate that can crowd out the answer. Preserve the original source reference so the chatbot can show where a passage came from.
Design the knowledge base around customer questions
For a support chatbot, organise content by what customers ask rather than by internal department. Analyse a sample of past conversations and group questions into categories such as setup, billing, returns, compatibility and troubleshooting. This exposes missing articles and reveals the words customers actually use.
Use structured formats for facts that must be retrieved precisely:

- FAQ entries with one question and one approved answer.
- Product records with consistent field names and units.
- Policy records with eligibility, exclusions, effective date and escalation path.
- Troubleshooting procedures with symptoms, checks and corrective actions.
Keep conflicting versions separate until an owner resolves them. If an old policy remains indexed beside a current one, the model may retrieve both and produce an unsafe compromise. Either remove superseded material or label it clearly and instruct the skill to prefer the newest authoritative record.
Step 5: ingest and verify the index
Run the ingestion procedure supplied by your selected skill. The exact command, file watcher and chunk settings belong to that skill, so do not assume a configuration from one backend works with another.
- Copy or connect only the approved sample documents.
- Run the skill’s indexing or ingestion action.
- Confirm that the backend reports successful processing rather than merely accepting filenames.
- Search for a distinctive sentence from each document and inspect the returned source and excerpt.
- Change one source document, re-index it, and verify that the updated date or wording is returned.
- Delete a test document and confirm that it no longer appears, subject to the backend’s retention behavior.
If the index returns no results, check file permissions, supported formats, parser errors, embedding credentials and the backend URL before rewriting the agent prompt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: query the chatbot and test realistic questions
The community use-case recipe describes semantic search that returns sources and excerpts and tells the user when nothing relevant matches. Preserve that behavior. A confident answer without a source is not evidence that retrieval worked.
Build a test set
Write questions from real conversations, including misspellings, shorthand, follow-up questions and requests that combine two documents. Include cases where the answer is deliberately absent. For each test, record the expected source, essential facts, prohibited claims and escalation requirement.
Check answer and citation behavior
- Does the response use the retrieved passage rather than unrelated model knowledge?
- Does it identify the document title, URL or other source metadata exposed by your skill?
- Does it distinguish a policy’s effective date and region?
- Does it say that no relevant match was found instead of inventing an answer?
- Does it ask a clarifying question when several products or accounts could fit?
- Does it escalate requests that the documents mark as restricted or human-only?
Score each answer for retrieval relevance, factual accuracy, completeness, source traceability and safe refusal. No published accuracy or adoption statistic was established for OpenClaw knowledge-base chatbots, so your own test set is the meaningful baseline.
Test retrieval separately from generation
When the skill provides a search or debug mode, inspect the passages before judging the prose. Correct passages with a bad answer indicate a prompt, model or formatting problem. Irrelevant passages indicate indexing, metadata, chunking or query-understanding problems. Treat these as different defects with different fixes.

Step 7: deliver the bot in a channel
After the agent passes private tests, expose it in a dedicated Telegram topic or Slack channel as suggested by the community recipe. Start with a small group of users and log questions, retrieved sources, unanswered cases and corrections. Avoid silently enabling the bot in a busy support channel until you know how it handles missing or conflicting documents.
Tell users what the bot can search, show source links when available, and provide a clear hand-off path to a human. Channel permissions should prevent ordinary users from changing skills, environment files or indexed content.

Maintenance, governance and security
Review content weekly
A Tencent Cloud customer-service guide recommends a weekly review loop. Examine unanswered questions, low-confidence answers, user corrections and newly changed policies. Assign an owner to each gap, update the source document, re-index it and rerun the affected tests. Do not “fix” a factual error only by adding a prompt sentence; correct the authoritative source as well.
Protect private data
- Minimise what you ingest. Remove secrets, payment details and unnecessary personal data.
- Use separate indexes or access filters for teams, customers and regions.
- Store API keys in environment variables or a secrets manager, never in
SKILL.md, prompts or public channels. - Restrict Gateway, backend and index network access to the hosts that need it.
- Review provider retention and deletion controls before using managed indexing.
- Keep audit records of source revisions and skill versions so an answer can be traced.
Handle updates safely
Pin or review skill updates, especially when they can execute scripts or access a large workspace. Test upgrades against your question set in a separate workspace before replacing the production skill. Back up original documents and local indexes independently.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The skill does not appear | Wrong install location, duplicate name or Gateway not reloaded | List skill locations in precedence order, inspect the imported files and restart or reload the Gateway |
| Search returns nothing | Ingestion failed, unsupported format, unreadable workspace or unreachable backend | Read ingestion logs, verify permissions and endpoint connectivity, then search for an exact sentence from a test file |
| Answers cite the wrong document | Stale or conflicting content, weak metadata or broad chunks | Remove superseded sources, add dates and authority fields, and test retrieval with region or product qualifiers |
| The model answers without evidence | The prompt does not require grounded responses or the skill did not pass excerpts | Inspect retrieved context, require source reporting and define a no-match response |
| RAGFlow connection fails | Incorrect API URL, key, network route or environment-file loading | Check the skill’s .env, permissions and server reachability, then restart the Gateway |
| Local ChromaDB setup breaks | Python environment or package-version mismatch | Use an isolated environment, record the installed version and follow the skill’s current compatibility notes |
Which backend should you choose?
- Choose managed indexing when reducing infrastructure work matters most and the provider’s privacy, retention and export terms meet your requirements.
- Choose ChromaDB when you want a local store and can operate Python dependencies, storage and backups.
- Choose RAGFlow when your team already runs RAGFlow or needs its separate ingestion and retrieval controls and can operate an API service.
In every case, the skill is the integration boundary. Read its current documentation, verify what data leaves your host, and test retrieval before inviting users.
Final checklist
- OpenClaw and the model provider answer ordinary questions.
- The selected skill is installed from a reviewed source and loads from the intended precedence location.
- The backend is reachable, authenticated and backed up where appropriate.
- Documents have owners, dates, access labels and clean structure.
- Ingestion has been verified with known passages and an update/deletion test.
- Realistic questions return relevant excerpts and sources.
- No-match, ambiguity and escalation behavior are explicit.
- A dedicated channel, permissions and weekly review process are in place.
This approach produces a maintainable chatbot that answers from your own documents without treating an unverified built-in knowledge feature as official OpenClaw functionality.
