Storyblok can select which products appear in an editorial grid, but it does not replace the catalog or purchasing system.
Decide what each system owns
- Storyblok: campaign copy, collection introductions, hero images, reusable page sections, and selected product references.
- Next.js: the storefront interface, routing, rendering strategy, and the connection between content and commerce data.
- Commerce backend: current product details, prices, availability, variants, cart, and purchasing behavior.
Storyblok’s Next.js commerce tutorial demonstrates this division with BigCommerce: an editor selects product IDs in Storyblok, then the app fetches fuller product details from BigCommerce. Avoid treating editorial product references as authoritative operational data; prices and availability need to come from the commerce system.

Choose the commerce backend before modeling products
Pick the provider around the shop’s actual catalog, checkout, markets, and existing systems. Storyblok’s tutorial uses Next.js Commerce with BigCommerce, while the starter repository describes a provider abstraction with BigCommerce, Shopify, and Swell examples. These references do not establish a universal best platform or provide a current head-to-head comparison.

Create the app and configure Storyblok
Start with the Storyblok Next.js quickstart and create a Storyblok space for the store’s content. Install @storyblok/react, configure the space’s access token through your application environment, and initialize the SDK using the rendering model you have chosen.
For an App Router application using React Server Components, Storyblok’s React SDK reference identifies the @storyblok/react/rsc export. Set the SDK region to match the Storyblok space. The reference says the region parameter is required unless the space was created in the EU.

Create React components for the page structures editors genuinely need, then register those components when initializing Storyblok. A handbag shop might use a page component plus a bounded set of nestable blocks:

- Hero: campaign image, heading, copy, and call to action.
- Collection banner: collection title and introductory text.
- Editorial story: image-and-copy layouts for materials, craftsmanship, or styling.
- Product grid: selected product references and display order.
- Product card: a reusable presentation for commerce-sourced product details.
Give fields clear types and restrict layout options to components the frontend supports. Storyblok’s quickstart describes rendering content types and nested blocks with StoryblokServerComponent; its documentation states, “The StoryblokStory dynamically renders content type and nestable blocks.”
Map Next.js routes to Storyblok stories
In the App Router, Storyblok documents an optional catch-all route that converts route parameters into a story slug, with the home story handled separately. This lets pages such as collection landing pages be managed as stories while Next.js renders them through the registered components.

Choose how routes are rendered rather than adopting a sample blindly. Storyblok’s routing guide shows a per-request server-rendered sample and points to the Content Delivery API links endpoint and generateStaticParams() as a way to supply routes for static rendering. If collection or product-story pages are created in the CMS, make sure the route-discovery approach includes newly published stories.
Keep editorial merchandising separate from live catalog data
Use Storyblok to decide how products are presented, not to maintain a second operational catalog. Useful editorial fields include a collection introduction, campaign copy, hero image, chosen product IDs, and the order in which products appear. Resolve those IDs through the commerce API to display current details.

For the handbag catalog, define the domain fields your shop needs in the commerce system—for example, bag style, material, color, dimensions, strap type, and collection. These are project-specific modeling recommendations, not fields mandated by Storyblok. Expose only the filters and labels that help customers browse the actual assortment.
The Storyblok commerce tutorial notes that product information selected in Storyblok is limited and cached, and demonstrates fetching fuller product information separately from BigCommerce. Plan for the same separation in your integration: editorial selection identifies products; the commerce API supplies the product data used for shopping.
Connect product pages, variants, cart, and checkout
Once the catalog connection works, implement product detail and variant selection against the chosen provider’s APIs, then connect cart and checkout to that provider’s supported purchasing flow. The cited Storyblok tutorial establishes the catalog integration pattern, but it does not document a complete current checkout implementation or compare providers’ checkout capabilities. Use the selected provider’s current documentation for those pieces rather than assuming that the content integration covers them.
Set up preview and deployment for your rendering model
Wrap the application with StoryblokProvider as shown in the current quickstart; it makes Storyblok fetching, component registration, and the Visual Editor bridge available. The quickstart’s server-rendered example uses the RSC export, so keep the SDK setup consistent with the App Router implementation.
The older commerce tutorial uses a Pages Router example and a local HTTPS proxy for its Visual Editor workflow. Do not copy that preview setup directly into an App Router project without checking the current preview instructions for your chosen SDK and routing model. The tutorial also discusses Vercel deployment and environment-variable workflows; keep tokens in deployment environment settings rather than hard-coding them into the app.
Quick Recap
Validate the complete editorial-to-purchase path
- Publish a test Storyblok page. Confirm that the route resolves to the intended story and that its registered blocks render.
- Change an editorial field. Update a heading, image, or collection introduction and verify the expected storefront preview and published result.
- Select products for a grid. Confirm the Storyblok references resolve to the intended commerce catalog items and preserve the editor’s display order.
- Check live product values. Verify that product details shown to shoppers come from the commerce API, including variant-specific information where applicable.
- Exercise purchasing behavior. Test variant selection, cart updates, and checkout using the chosen provider’s documented flow.
- Test route discovery and deployment. Publish a new collection story and verify it becomes reachable under the app’s selected rendering and route-generation strategy.
