The available official examples document the necessary components, not a tested, copy-and-paste file-loop command. Plan to assemble and validate the pipeline on your Pi, then test the end-of-file transition with a private or unlisted YouTube stream before relying on it.
How the stream is assembled
The conceptual media path is:
video file → demux and decode → convert or scale if needed → H.264 encode → FLV mux → RTMPS output

If the file has audio, add an audio path that decodes it and encodes it as AAC before the mux. GStreamer’s rtmpsink sends RTMP data using librtmp and expects FLV media; its documented example includes an encoder, flvmux, and rtmpsink. The pipeline must also be paired with a playback controller that detects end of stream (EOS) and restarts the file. These components describe the design, not a verified command for every file or Pi installation.

- Source and playback: Open the local file and decode the tracks it contains. The exact demuxer and decoders depend on the file’s codecs and installed plugins.
- Conversion: Convert or scale video and audio if the chosen encoder or output settings require it.
- Encoding: Encode video as H.264 for a straightforward route to YouTube. Encode audio as AAC when the source includes audio.
- Muxing and delivery: Combine the encoded tracks into FLV and send them to the YouTube RTMPS ingest address with
rtmpsink. - Loop control: Catch EOS and restart playback without unnecessarily tearing down the outgoing encode, mux, and network path. Whether a particular implementation preserves the connection across a repeat must be tested.
Check the Pi and GStreamer before building
Verify the required elements
The GStreamer rtmpsink element is part of the Bad Plug-ins package. Check that the RTMP plugin is installed on the Pi before assembling the final pipeline. You also need the demuxer, decoder, converter, encoder, audio elements if applicable, and FLV muxer required by your media and design. A missing element or unsupported source codec means the pipeline will need different installed plugins or a compatible input file.

Use Raspberry Pi 5 guidance in its stated context
Raspberry Pi’s official GStreamer camera-streaming example specifies x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1 for the Pi 5 camera source, where an earlier-device example uses v4l2h264enc. That is camera-streaming guidance, not a benchmark or universal optimum for transcoding a prerecorded file. Raspberry Pi also says to use avdec_h264 instead of v4l2h264dec in its Pi 5 playback example. These are useful platform-specific clues, but they do not establish CPU load, supported file performance, or a guaranteed resolution and frame rate for this workload.
Set YouTube-compatible output
YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward GStreamer Pi setup, use H.264; do not infer accelerated encoding performance from the Pi camera example. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Practical starting settings
| Output choice | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | Use and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps recommended | A conservative starting point to test; this is YouTube ingest guidance, not a Pi 5 performance guarantee. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Choose only if the source, encoder workload, and stable upload capacity support it. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps recommended | Test with representative motion and audio before leaving it unattended. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | The published ingest figure does not show that a Pi 5 can encode this file workload reliably. |
Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Match the output to a resolution and frame rate the Pi can encode and the internet connection can carry steadily, rather than choosing the highest available setting by default.
Choose a file-loop method
A file reaching its end does not automatically mean that a bare gst-launch-1.0 command will start it again. GStreamer’s playback APIs report EOS to an application; that application must handle the event. Two documented approaches are available, with different version and implementation considerations.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
| Approach | What the documentation establishes | What to validate for a YouTube output |
|---|---|---|
| Application using playbin | playbin plays a URI and reports bus messages, including EOS. An application can reset playback through READY or NULL and start it again. |
Design the controller so the outgoing RTMPS pipeline can remain alive if possible. Test for a gap, reconnect, or error at the file boundary; the documentation does not guarantee seamless looping with YouTube output. |
| Application using GstPlay track-loop mode | GST_PLAY_LOOP_TRACK loops the current track and is documented as available since GStreamer 1.28. |
Check the installed GStreamer version and API availability, then test the loop transition with the chosen output pipeline. The documentation does not benchmark gaplessness or validate this mode with YouTube ingest. |
Restarting an entire output pipeline at every EOS may interrupt the live ingest. Keeping playback restart logic inside a persistent encode, mux, and output pipeline is a sensible design target, but it is an implementation inference—not a documented guarantee. Test the complete file boundary on a private or unlisted stream before using it for a public, unattended broadcast.
Connect the pipeline to YouTube Live
- Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Obtain the ingest details and stream key shown for that stream. The exact control-room labels and availability can vary; use the details YouTube provides for the stream you are configuring.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in a script, example, log, screenshot, or support post. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to send video to your stream.
- Direct the RTMPS output to the supplied ingest address. Configure
rtmpsinkfor the YouTube endpoint and key using the format supported by your installed GStreamer and librtmp components. The exact combined command is build-specific and is not established by the component examples. - Start with a conservative output and test the whole chain. Confirm video, audio, bitrate, and the repeat transition in a private or unlisted stream before switching to a public broadcast.
- Check the live health indicators. Run an upload-speed test, use a connection with stable headroom above the selected bitrate, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room during the test and event.
Test and troubleshoot
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
rtmpsink or another element is not found |
Required GStreamer plugin is missing or unavailable in the installed environment. | Verify the RTMP Bad Plug-ins package and each element required by the file’s codecs and pipeline. |
| File plays locally but cannot enter the output pipeline | Unsupported source codec, missing demuxer or decoder, or incompatible media caps. | Identify the file’s video and audio tracks, check the required plugins, and add the appropriate decode and conversion paths. |
| Stream starts but YouTube reports ingest problems | Incorrect ingest details, incompatible output settings, unstable upload, or a keyframe interval outside YouTube’s guidance. | Recheck the Control Room endpoint and private stream key, use CBR with a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and test at a lower bitrate if the connection is unstable. |
| Playback stops at the end of the file | EOS is reaching the application without a restart handler, or the selected loop API is unavailable. | Implement EOS handling with playbin, or check that GstPlay loop mode is available in the installed version; test the boundary while observing the outgoing stream. |
| Live output disconnects at every repeat | The implementation may be resetting the whole output pipeline rather than restarting playback within a persistent output path. | Review where EOS handling resets pipeline state and test a playback-only restart. A persistent connection is a design goal, not guaranteed behavior. |
| Video pauses or the Pi cannot sustain the chosen format | Encoder workload, source format conversion, or insufficient network capacity may be involved; the cited Pi camera example does not establish file-transcoding performance. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, simplify conversion where possible, and repeat the representative-motion test while monitoring YouTube stream health. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
- Use video and audio that you own or are authorized to stream, including any music, images, or third-party footage in the recording. A live format does not make copyrighted material safe to rebroadcast.
- Do not assume that permission to use a recording automatically qualifies a channel or video for monetization. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether a file can be streamed; review the current policy and the terms that apply to your channel.
- Review YouTube’s live-stream requirements and account status before scheduling a broadcast. Technical ingest compatibility does not establish policy eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube loop without keeping a Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded recordings or playlists from the cloud. The setup is upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasting.
