How to Build a GEO Agent That Learns from Past Actions

A GEO scan measures appearances; a feedback-loop agent adds recommendations, recorded actions, and later outcomes, while keeping claims about impact within the evidence.

A GEO visibility scan can show whether a brand appears in AI-generated answers; by itself, it cannot tell a founder what to do next or whether a previous change helped. A history-aware agent closes that gap by connecting scans to recommendations, founder actions, and later outcomes. The key is to treat this as a feedback loop—not as proof that any particular optimization improves visibility.

What a GEO agent with hindsight is meant to solve

Generative engine optimization (GEO) concerns how brands and their material appear in answers synthesized by AI systems. Unlike a conventional search-results page, an AI answer may combine information and show sources within the response. A simple brand-mention count therefore captures only part of visibility.

In the architecture described by Shaik Irfan, a scan answers whether a brand appeared in responses to a set of questions. A history-aware recommender adds context: what actions were previously suggested and taken, and what happened in later scans. Irfan summarizes the gap this way: “A scan can tell a founder whether an AI engine mentions their brand. It doesn’t tell them what to do next, whether they’ve already tried it, or whether the last action helped.” Read the implementation account.

How the feedback loop works

  1. Start a scan. A founder enters a brand name in a dashboard.
  2. Generate customer-like questions. A Scan Agent creates queries resembling questions a customer might ask an AI assistant.
  3. Collect and analyze answers. The system sends those questions to engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, then checks the responses for brand and competitor mentions.
  4. Recommend an action using history. A Recommendation Agent considers the current scan alongside the brand’s stored history in Hindsight.
  5. Let a person decide and act. The founder chooses whether to implement a recommendation; the system should record what was actually done.
  6. Write the outcome back to memory. A later scan gives the system another observation to connect to the prior action.

The intended cycle is observation, recommendation, human action, outcome, and memory. Hindsight’s role in this design is to carry context from one decision to the next, rather than merely store a collection of scans. The implementation account does not identify Hindsight’s vendor, version, storage guarantees, or operating cost. Its named engines are examples, not a specification of current API access or integration behavior.

Why keep scanning separate from recommending?

The Scan Agent handles query generation, model calls, and structured scan output. The Recommendation Agent reasons over that output and the stored history. This division makes it clearer which component observed a response and which proposed what to do about it.

The example scan record includes a brand, timestamp, tested queries, brand-mention count, total query count, competitors mentioned, and raw answer snippets. Keeping the queries and snippets alongside summary counts lets a person inspect what the count represents, instead of relying on a single number without its evidence.

The author says the modules could be developed independently against sample data or hardcoded JSON, then integrated at checkpoints. That is a practical development benefit: the AI pipeline, memory layer, and frontend can progress without each one depending on a finished version of the others.

What the agent needs to remember

A scan-only record tells the system what it observed. To learn from interventions, the history also needs to distinguish recommendations from actions and outcomes. A recommendation that was never implemented should not be treated as an intervention; an implemented action should be linked to the later observations used to assess it.

  • Observation: timestamp, tested queries, answers or inspectable snippets, brand and competitor mentions, and any citation evidence collected.
  • Recommendation: the proposed change and the scan evidence it responds to.
  • Action: whether the founder implemented the proposal, and what was changed.
  • Outcome: subsequent scan observations, with enough context to compare them to the earlier scan.

With that history, an early recommendation can be made without prior intervention data. Later recommendations can account for what has already been tried and whether the measured visibility moved afterward. That is cumulative context; it is not, by itself, proof that an action caused a change.

How to evaluate whether an action helped

A before-and-after mention count is useful as a signal, but it is not a clean causal test. Answers can vary, queries may not be equivalent, and unrelated changes to content or an engine can affect what appears. The implementation account does not establish a controlled method for attributing a change to a specific recommendation.

For a more informative evaluation, preserve comparable queries and scan timing, inspect the underlying answer snippets, and record other relevant changes. Separate visibility from citation quality: whether the brand appears is different from whether an answer accurately attributes information to an appropriate source.

The foundational GEO paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and coauthors argues that ranked-result visibility is insufficient for synthesized answers and proposes measures involving citation position, length, uniqueness, relevance, and influence. The paper introduced GEO-bench with 10,000 queries across diverse domains. At ACM KDD 2024, its authors reported visibility improvements of up to 40% for evaluated GEO methods, with results varying by query domain; their Perplexity evaluation reported up to 37%. These are findings from those evaluated settings, not expected gains for a particular website or this agent. See the GEO paper.

A 2026 Findings of ACL paper by Beining Wu and coauthors describes MAGEO, which coordinates planning, editing, and fidelity-aware evaluation and distills validated patterns into engine-specific skills. Its abstract reports outperforming heuristic baselines in visibility and citation fidelity on three mainstream engines. The paper also introduces a Twin Branch Evaluation Protocol, DSV-CF for semantic visibility and attribution accuracy, and MSME-GEO-Bench for multi-scenario, multi-engine evaluation. These are the authors’ reported results for MAGEO, not independent validation of the hindsight-based system described here. Read the MAGEO paper.

What the ten-scan demonstration does—and does not—show

The implementation account explicitly says its demo uses a believable ten-scan history and that the history is synthetic. It illustrates how an interface and feedback loop can represent scans, actions, and outcomes. It does not establish that the illustrated changes came from live measurements, that a recommendation caused a change, or that the agent improves production outcomes.

Criteria for assessing a GEO feedback system

  • Engine and query coverage: Which engines are included, and do the questions reflect the use cases being monitored?
  • Repeatability: Are queries and scan timing consistent enough to make comparisons meaningful?
  • Inspectable evidence: Can a reviewer examine the answer snippets behind the summary counts?
  • Clear event history: Does the system distinguish observations, recommendations, actions actually taken, and subsequent outcomes?
  • More than mentions: Does evaluation consider citation fidelity and other dimensions of visibility?
  • Attribution limits: Can the system account for other changes, and does it avoid claiming causation from a simple before-and-after difference?

These criteria follow from the architecture and evaluation approaches described above; they are not the results of a product comparison. The central design principle is straightforward: memory becomes useful when a system links what it observed to what it recommended, what a person changed, and what later evidence showed.
