A friendly skeleton yard display starts with a stable base, a pose that looks more playful than spooky, and a few costume details. Build a smaller custom figure from a plastic skeleton, dowels and plywood, or make a store-bought oversized skeleton the focal point. The support and setup needs differ substantially, so use the instructions for the specific decoration you choose.
Choose a scale that fits your yard and setup

Build a smaller skeleton display
Hallmark’s outdoor-decor project provides a base-and-support approach for a custom skeleton. It is marked “Advanced,” and its dimensions and materials are a starting point—not a certified outdoor structure or a tested wind rating. Hallmark’s DIY Halloween Graveyard Skeletons tutorial

Gather the materials
- An inexpensive plastic skeleton
- Two 3-foot, half-inch dowels per skeleton
- Plywood for a base
- Modeling clay, insulation foam and wood glue
- Black spray paint
- Wire
- A power drill and knife
- Optional foam or plastic eyes, plus clothes, a wig or a hat
Assemble the base and supports
- Paint the plywood base black and let it dry.
- Drill holes in the base and glue the dowels into them.
- Cut holes in the skeleton parts where they will fit over the supports. Take care with the knife and follow the skeleton’s construction rather than forcing a tight fit.
- Fit the parts over the dowels and assemble the skeleton. Use foam to help secure components, as in Hallmark’s project.
- Add the remaining details and accessories. If you want a simpler build, leave out custom hand or eye work and focus on the pose and costume.
Hallmark’s materials and sequence describe a craft project; they do not establish a safe wind limit or how much outdoor force the finished display can withstand. Choose a sheltered placement and secure the figure appropriately for its specific design, without treating the tutorial as a structural specification.

Make the skeleton look welcoming
Use the pose and accessories to set the mood before adding more yard props. An upright, waving or seated pose can read as a greeter rather than a scare. A familiar outfit, colorful wig or hat gives the figure a costume-like character; Hallmark lists clothes, wigs and hats as optional accessories.
Keep the scene simple: make the skeleton the focal point and add only a few compatible decorations. Home Depot suggests colored landscape lighting, a group of smaller skeletons or a themed yard scene. Choose props and lighting colors that suit the friendly tone you want. If using powered lights or effects, keep the visitor route clear, plan where power will go, and follow the product labels and applicable electrical safety instructions; the cited guidance does not establish a universal outdoor electrical setup.

A more elaborate seated scene can use a trash can, zip ties, clear tubing, spray foam, paint, a bucket, a pump and lights, as shown in SPetrichHome’s example. Treat that arrangement as visual inspiration, not a tested plan or an endorsement of its water and electrical setup.

For Home Depot’s specific 12-foot model, the retailer’s April 7, 2026 guide recommends a flat, level location, reviewing the box instructions, and organizing and checking parts before assembly. It calls for the model’s base stabilizers and supplied ground stakes. The guide says to use at least three people to stand that skeleton upright. Because assembly includes a ladder step, follow the actual product instructions and use suitable help rather than adapting the steps to a different model.

Home Depot describes its model as weather resistant but advises taking it down when windy weather is expected. The guide gives no wind-speed threshold, and that advice should not be generalized to other skeletons. Keep children, pets and adults from leaning on the standing figure, and keep it away from fire pits and other heat sources. The guide also says not to pressure wash the model or use bleach. For its 12-foot skeleton, Home Depot recommends cleaning with mild soap and water using a non-abrasive brush, then disassembling the figure. Remove the LED-eye batteries and store the parts away from heat and moisture, using the original box or suitably sized plastic storage totes. These care instructions are for that model; check the label and instructions for any other decoration you own.
