If officials issue an evacuation order, leave promptly using their current directions. Don’t wait for an order if you feel unsafe or local officials advise you to leave early. Alert terms vary by jurisdiction, so learn how your local agencies define them and keep checking their updates during a fire.
When should you leave?
Follow the latest instructions from local emergency management, fire agencies and law enforcement. The U.S. Fire Administration advises people to go promptly when told to evacuate; it also says to leave immediately rather than wait for an order if you feel unsafe. Late departure can mean heavier traffic, while smoke, embers and debris may reduce visibility. A general guide cannot assess live fire conditions: local evacuation boundaries, routes and destination instructions take precedence.

Understand the alert—not just its label
Alert terminology differs across jurisdictions. CAL FIRE’s California map legend uses these terms:

|---|---|
| Evacuation Order | Immediate threat to life; law enforcement instructs people to leave immediately. |
| Evacuation Warning | Potential threat to life or property. CAL FIRE says people who need extra time, including people with pets or livestock, should leave immediately. |
| Evacuation Advisory | Precautionary notice to prepare, gather essentials and stay informed in case an order follows. |
These definitions describe CAL FIRE’s California map, not a national standard. Check what the authority issuing your alert means by its wording and follow its specific instructions. A National Weather Service fire-weather watch or red-flag message signals critical fire-weather conditions and preparedness; it is not itself a local evacuation order. For evacuation status and directions, use local emergency-management and fire-agency channels.

How to keep up with alerts during a fire
Before fire season or a local threat, enroll in your community’s emergency alerts on relevant phones and devices. Know where local officials post evacuation notices and route or shelter changes. During an incident, keep monitoring local government, emergency management and fire-agency updates; charge phones in case power fails.
Wildfire behavior can change with weather, terrain and vegetation. Don’t assume that a route or evacuation status you checked earlier is still current. Use the most recent official directions you can access safely.

How to plan evacuation routes
Prepare before there is a fire
- Learn your community’s evacuation plan and choose a place to go.
- Identify a primary route and an alternate route away from the hazard; practice at least two ways out where feasible.
- Make sure household members know the plan and meeting place. Account for work, school, commute routes, mobility or access needs, gated exits, pets and other animals.
- Consider road access: clear routes where possible so residents and responders can use them.
Use incident-specific directions when leaving
During a fire, take the route and go to the destination local authorities direct you to use. A route you planned in advance is for preparation; it is not a reason to drive toward a closed, threatened or operational area. Keep monitoring official updates while safely departing. USFA cautions against using a large vehicle or trailer if you are unfamiliar with operating it, because a stalled vehicle can impede residents and responders.
What to put in a wildfire go-bag
Prepare an evacuation bag before a threat and keep it accessible; CAL FIRE advises having it in the vehicle when an immediate evacuation is necessary. Prepack supplies and tailor them to the people and animals in your household. Check the contents periodically, and don’t delay departure to finish packing or collect optional possessions.

A commercial emergency kit or backpack can serve as a container or starting point, but inspect it and fill household-specific gaps. No particular brand or prepacked kit is necessary to decide when to evacuate.
Wear protective clothing if it is ready
CAL FIRE recommends long pants, long sleeves, sturdy shoes or boots, a cap, a dry bandanna for face covering, and goggles or glasses when immediate evacuation is necessary; it says 100% cotton is preferable. Prioritize leaving and following official directions over collecting additional gear.
