How to Build a Fanless PC Without Overheating

A reliable fanless PC starts with the cooling system: match sustained CPU and GPU heat to the exact case or cooler, confirm clearances, then test under your real workload and placement.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A fanless PC stays cool only when its cooling system can continuously shed the heat your actual CPU and GPU produce. Choose the case or cooler first, match it to sustained power—not just the processor’s printed TDP—and check motherboard clearances, GPU cooling, room conditions and final temperatures under your real workload. A case’s maximum rating is a model-specific specification, not a guarantee for every build.

Choose the cooling architecture before the parts

In a case-integrated design, heat pipes carry processor heat to the chassis panels, which act as a large heatsink. A standalone passive CPU cooler instead relies on natural convection around its heatsink and needs a compatible enclosure and enough room for air to move. These designs have different clearance and workload constraints; neither makes a build suitable for every CPU simply because the processor fits the socket.

Manufacturer product ratings can help narrow the options, but they are not independent test results or universal safe-power limits. Streacom says its cases’ maximum recommended CPU TDP depends on the model and factors such as ambient temperature and placement (Streacom FAQ). Its FC10 guidance also advises considering the CPU’s actual maximum output, rather than relying on the nominal TDP (Streacom FC10).

Cooling option Manufacturer-listed capacity or design What to check
HDPLEX H1 V3 Six-heatpipe system; HDPLEX lists CPU support up to 65 W TDP and recommends CPUs at or below 65 W. Confirm the exact CPU and motherboard fit, and check current stock; the USA and Germany listings showed sold out when accessed October 7, 2026. HDPLEX H1 V3
Streacom FC8 V3 Compact, 6 L fanless case; Streacom lists a maximum 95 W TDP rating. This is a case-specific rating. Streacom warns that a nominally passive GPU that relies on active case airflow may overheat in this compact enclosure. Streacom FC8 V3
HDPLEX H5 HDPLEX lists support for specified Intel and AMD CPU configurations up to 125 W TDP. Check the current documentation for socket-layout exceptions and exact motherboard compatibility. HDPLEX H5
Streacom SG10 Loop-heat-pipe case rated by Streacom for 250 W CPU and 350 W GPU, 600 W combined. These are ratings for this specialized design, not a capability to assume for other fanless cases. Streacom SG10
Noctua NH-P1 Standalone passive CPU cooler with a setup guide and compatibility information. Follow the guide’s compatibility and system-condition requirements; suitability depends on the sustained heat load and complete system. Noctua NH-P1 setup guide

These are manufacturer-listed figures available on the linked product pages, which do not state publication years; they were accessed October 7, 2026. Treat them as starting points for compatibility checks, not as guarantees that a particular processor will maintain its advertised performance in your room and workload.

Match CPU power to the cooling system

Look beyond the printed TDP

CPU TDP does not necessarily describe the processor’s maximum power output when boost features are active. Check the selected CPU’s power behavior and the limits configured by the motherboard. If the processor can sustain more heat than the passive design can dissipate, choose a lower-power CPU or set BIOS power limits to keep its output within the cooling system’s intended envelope.

There is no universal CPU choice from the title alone: workload, platform, motherboard, form factor and ambient conditions all affect the decision. A 65 W TDP label, for example, does not by itself establish that a particular CPU will remain within a case’s thermal capacity during a long, boost-heavy workload.

Plan around the work the PC will do

Office applications and media playback typically present a different sustained load from long renders, compiling, or simultaneous CPU and GPU work. Define the real workload before choosing parts. A fanless system designed around occasional bursts may need lower power limits—or different hardware—if it will run all-core work for extended periods.

Check motherboard fit and heat-pipe routing

Physical compatibility is part of cooling compatibility. The CPU socket must sit where the cooler or case’s heat-pipe assembly can reach it, and the complete route from the processor block to the chassis must remain clear. Board components that fit inside the case can still obstruct heat transfer.

  • Verify the exact motherboard model against the case or cooler’s current compatibility information.
  • Check socket position, board dimensions, VRM heatsinks, plugs and connectors against the heat-pipe path and mounting hardware.
  • Choose a motherboard with capable VRM cooling; surrounding components also need appropriate thermal conditions in a passive build.
  • Confirm that the required heat pipes, brackets and panels can be installed without interference.

Do not treat a general socket-support list as proof that every board using that socket will fit. Component placement and clearances can vary between motherboards.

Account for GPU heat separately

Integrated graphics avoid a second major heat source and simplify a passive build. If you need a discrete GPU, select a case and card combination specifically designed to dissipate that GPU’s heat without fans. A card marketed as fanless may still rely on airflow generated by other fans in an ordinary PC case; removing those fans can leave it without the cooling it expects.

Build and validate the finished system

  1. Record the conditions. Decide on the sustained workload, likely room temperature and final placement. Keep heat-dissipating case surfaces exposed; do not enclose or obstruct them. Ambient temperature and placement affect fanless-case capacity, as Streacom notes in its FAQ.
  2. Select the case or cooler first. Check its exact CPU and GPU support, socket list, dimensions, heat-transfer hardware and motherboard compatibility before buying the CPU and board.
  3. Set a realistic power budget. Review the CPU’s maximum package-power behavior, including boost. If it exceeds what the passive design supports, choose a lower-power processor or set BIOS power limits appropriate to the cooling system.
  4. Install the thermal interface and mount carefully. Use the specified hardware and application method. Intel says thermal interface material is critical for heat transfer from the processor to a heatsink (Intel Thermal Management Recommendations). Check the case or cooler package before purchasing paste; the HDPLEX H1 V3 listing includes thermal paste.
  5. Test in the final configuration. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, package power, clock behavior, throttling and stability while running the workload the PC is meant to handle. Test with the case in its intended location and under realistic room conditions, not only on an open bench.

Can a 65 W CPU run fanless?

Sometimes, but “65 W” alone cannot answer the question. HDPLEX recommends CPUs at or below 65 W TDP for its H1 V3, while Streacom’s FAQ says cooling capacity depends on the specific case and external conditions such as ambient temperature and placement. You still need to verify the exact CPU’s power behavior, motherboard fit, case compatibility and sustained performance in the completed build.

Are high temperatures under load normal?

Passive cooling can produce high CPU temperatures under sustained load. Noctua’s NH-P1 guide says that passively cooling CPUs dissipating 80 W or more may require operation near their thermal limits. That is a qualitative warning about the conditions such loads can require, not a recommendation that every CPU at or above 80 W is suitable for passive operation. Noctua’s guide also gives temperature examples for processor generations it calls current, but those figures should not be applied to an unspecified CPU; check the selected processor’s own documentation (Noctua NH-P1 setup guide).

A high reading alone does not establish damage. Look at whether the CPU throttles, loses performance, becomes unstable, or causes problems for other components. There is no single safe temperature established for all processors, and Intel’s general thermal guidance is written for systems with heatsinks and effective airflow—not as approval of a fully fanless configuration.
