The available source material establishes the project’s topic, but not its implementation: it does not verify how HashDup scans files, filters candidates, handles errors, or measures performance. What can be explained reliably is the Node.js foundation for a memory-conscious duplicate finder: read file data incrementally and update a cryptographic hash as each chunk arrives.
What is established about HashDup?
The author’s profile lists an article titled “How I Built HashDup: A Fast, Memory-Safe Duplicate File Finder CLI in Node.js,” establishing that the project is presented as a Node.js CLI for identifying duplicate files. The listing does not establish its source code, CLI options, package details, tests, or measured speed and memory use. The author’s article listing is the available primary reference.

A secondary summary describes a possible two-stage approach—grouping files by size, then hashing same-size candidates with chunked SHA-256 reads—but that implementation detail is not confirmed by the accessible primary material. It should not be treated as a verified description of HashDup.
How can Node.js hash a file without reading it all at once?
Node.js provides incremental hashing through crypto.createHash(). A program can read a file as a stream, pass each available chunk to the hash object with update(), and request the digest after the stream has been consumed. The Node.js v24.21.0 Crypto documentation demonstrates this pattern and says: “If the data can be big or if it is streamed, it’s still recommended to use crypto.createHash() instead.”

In broad terms, the operation looks like this:
- Create a hash object using an algorithm supported by the Node.js build and platform.
- Open the file as a readable stream.
- For each chunk emitted by the stream, call the hash object’s
update()method. - After the stream has been fully read, request the digest and use it as a content fingerprint.
This is a general Node.js pattern, not a claim about HashDup’s exact code or chosen algorithm. The available hash algorithms depend on the OpenSSL algorithms supported by the Node.js build and platform, as the Crypto documentation notes.
What does streaming mean for memory use?
Incremental reads avoid intentionally loading an entire file into application memory before hashing it. That makes streaming a sensible design for large files, but it does not prove a fixed upper limit on total memory use. Node.js streams use flow control to help prevent a faster source from overwhelming a slower destination; the Node.js streams documentation cautions that streams do not enforce a strict memory limit in general.

Memory use also depends on the surrounding program: for example, how many files it processes concurrently and what other data it retains. Without verified implementation details or measurements, “memory-safe” is best understood as the title’s characterization—not as an independently established benchmark or guarantee.

Why might a duplicate finder compare file sizes first?
File size can be used as a low-cost way to narrow the set of possible matches: files with different sizes cannot be identical byte for byte. Hashing only files that share a size can therefore avoid reading the contents of files that are already ruled out. This is a general design option; the accessible primary material does not confirm that HashDup uses it.

A matching hash is evidence that two files have the same content, but a hash-based comparison is not logically identical to checking every byte. The algorithm, any byte-for-byte verification step, and the tool’s tolerance for collision risk are implementation choices that are not established for HashDup by the available primary source.

No verified, named, dated benchmark for HashDup’s speed or memory use is available in the cited primary material. The secondary summary’s numeric memory claim lacks accessible benchmark methodology, so it cannot support a performance figure. The title calls the tool “fast,” but the available evidence does not show test conditions, comparison tools, file sets, hardware, or results that would let a reader evaluate that claim.

For a meaningful performance comparison, a report would need to say what files and total data volume were tested, how many files were processed concurrently, what machine and Node.js version were used, and how elapsed time and memory were measured. Those details are not established here.
