Convert JSON to a TypeScript Interface: Manual Steps and quicktype

Map a JSON object to TypeScript types by hand or generate a starting interface with quicktype, then check it against representative API responses.

To convert JSON to a TypeScript interface, describe each property in the sample with its corresponding TypeScript type: strings become string, numbers become number, booleans become boolean, arrays use [], and nested objects can have their own interfaces. For larger or nested responses, quicktype can generate a starting point from a JSON sample; review the result against the API’s actual contract before relying on it.

Convert a JSON object to an interface by hand

Consider this JSON object:

{
  "id": 17,
  "name": "Ada",
  "active": true,
  "tags": ["typescript", "json"],
  "profile": { "city": "London" }
}

A corresponding TypeScript declaration is:

interface Profile {
  city: string;
}

interface User {
  id: number;
  name: string;
  active: boolean;
  tags: string[];
  profile: Profile;
}

This describes the shape of the sample: id is a number, name is a string, active is a boolean, and tags is an array of strings. The nested profile object is described by a separate interface. TypeScript checks compatibility structurally, by comparing members; an object does not need to explicitly declare that it implements User to match that shape. TypeScript’s interface documentation explains this shape-focused approach.

Generate an interface from JSON with quicktype

If the response is large or contains several levels of nested objects, a generator can save manual transcription. quicktype documents both a browser workflow and a command-line workflow for generating TypeScript from JSON. Its CLI example is:

quicktype user.json -o User.ts

Save valid JSON in user.json, run the command in an environment where quicktype is available, then review the generated declarations in User.ts. The browser tool is another option when you want to paste a sample instead of working from a file. See quicktype’s generator and documentation for the available workflow.

quicktype says, “Give quicktype more than one sample and it merges what it learns.” Providing multiple representative samples can reveal fields that are absent in some responses and values that may be null. Its repository documentation also describes support for JSON and other input formats, TypeScript output, and optional dynamic type checks for several languages, including TypeScript.

Choose manual conversion or a generator

Approach Useful when What to review
Write the interface manually The object is small, stable, and easy to understand. Check every property, nested object, and array item against the API contract; you control names and structure directly.
Generate with quicktype The sample is large or deeply nested, or you can supply multiple representative responses. Confirm inferred optional, nullable, union, and property-name choices match the intended contract; generated output is a starting point, not proof of correctness.

The cited quicktype materials document features but do not establish an independent speed or accuracy ranking. Choose based on the size and variability of your data and how much control you need over the resulting declarations.

TypeScript Programming Language - Software Engineer & Coder T-Shirt
  • TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
  • TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Check the inferred types before using them

  • Start with valid JSON. JSON does not allow trailing commas, unquoted object keys, or comments. quicktype’s FAQ identifies these as common input problems.
  • Compare multiple responses when possible. A single example only shows the fields and values present in that example. Check whether nested objects are always present, and inspect representative array elements for differing shapes.
  • Distinguish optional from nullable. A missing property differs from a property whose value is null. A property that may be absent can be written as name?: string; one that is required but may be null can be written as name: string | null. If both cases are possible, the type may need to express both.
  • Check unions and enums against the domain. A generator may infer alternatives from observed values, but the API’s intended contract determines whether those alternatives are complete and correct.
  • Review property names. JSON keys may not be the names you want in TypeScript. Check how the generated TypeScript represents them rather than assuming another language’s renaming or serialization behavior applies.
  • Rename and organize for maintainability. Give the root type a useful name and extract deeply nested shapes into named interfaces where that improves readability.

An interface does not validate incoming JSON at runtime

TypeScript interfaces describe types for static checking; they do not, by themselves, inspect a network response or reject invalid data while a program runs. A type declaration based on a sample is useful for writing and checking code, but an external payload can still be missing fields or contain unexpected values. If the application must detect malformed input, use a runtime validator or generated checking/parsing code. quicktype documents runtime checks as a separate capability, not as an automatic effect of declaring an interface.
