Build around your financial goal, time horizon and tolerance for losses—not a universal AI-stock percentage. Then look through every stock and fund you own to find your actual AI-related exposure, check whether holdings diversify one another, and set a rule for reviewing and rebalancing the portfolio. No number of tickers or funds can establish diversification on its own.
1. Define what the portfolio needs to do
Start with the job of the money, not with a list of AI companies. Ask when you expect to need it, what goal it serves, and how much volatility or loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. These answers shape the portfolio’s overall risk; they cannot be replaced by a view about AI’s prospects.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that asset allocation is personal and depends on factors including investment timeframe and risk tolerance. A longer horizon may allow an investor to take more volatility, while a shorter horizon may call for less-risky investments. Those are general relationships, not a formula for any individual portfolio. The SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance does not establish a standard percentage for AI stocks, and there is no universal AI allocation that fits every goal.

- Purpose: What is this money intended to fund?
- Time horizon: When might you need to draw on it, and could that date change?
- Risk tolerance: What decline or period of volatility could you withstand while sticking to your plan?
- Existing allocation: What broad asset categories and investments already make up the portfolio?
- Review rule: How often, or after what amount of allocation drift, will you review it?
These are inputs to a decision, not a prompt to pick an AI-stock target immediately. If the goal, time horizon or ability to tolerate losses changes, the allocation decision may need to be revisited. Individualized allocation decisions may call for advice from a qualified financial professional; this guide is general education, not a personal investment recommendation.
2. Find your actual AI-related exposure
An investor can own AI-related exposure directly through individual stocks and indirectly through funds. A broad-market, growth, technology, semiconductor or AI-themed fund may contain companies connected to AI, even if “AI” is absent from its name. For that reason, count underlying holdings and exposures across the portfolio—not just the number of securities or fund tickers.
Make a complete holdings inventory
- List every investment account and holding. Include individual stocks and each fund, rather than starting with only the investments that appear most AI-focused.
- Collect fund holdings. For every broad-market, growth, technology, semiconductor and AI-themed fund, look up its published holdings and relevant fund documents. The SEC’s ETF guidance explains that ETFs have underlying holdings and discusses information investors can examine about them.
- Identify repeated companies or exposures. Compare those underlying holdings with one another and with the individual stocks in the portfolio. A company held directly and through several funds still represents exposure to that company in multiple places.
- Record sector and industry concentrations. Note when several investments point toward the same sector or industry, even if their names and stated strategies differ.
- Separate what is known from what is inferred. A company or fund may be associated with AI in an investor’s analysis without that label being an official fund classification. Record the basis for your classification rather than assuming every fund with a technology-related name has the same exposure.
- Set a date for the information. Fund holdings and index composition can change. Note when the holdings information was published, and check current fund documents before acting on it.
Distinguish ticker count from diversification
Suppose a portfolio holds several funds with different names, plus a few individual stocks. If the funds own many of the same companies or are concentrated in related industries, the portfolio may contain more tickers without gaining much exposure to genuinely different economic areas. Conversely, a fund with a broad mandate is not automatically a perfect fit: its underlying holdings still need to be compared with the rest of the portfolio.

At the company level, check whether the same names recur. At the sector and industry level, check whether apparently different holdings depend on related parts of the market. At the strategy level, consider whether funds use similar index rules or investment approaches. This is a practical way to ask whether holdings are different in substance, rather than just in label.

The SEC cautions that a narrowly focused fund may not provide diversification, stating: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” That warning appears in Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance. A fund’s legal structure or number of holdings does not remove the need to inspect concentration and overlap.
3. Compare investment routes using the same questions
There is no need to choose between individual stocks, broad funds and thematic funds by comparing their names alone. Apply the same checks to each candidate and to what you already own: underlying holdings and overlap, sector and industry concentration, strategy, fees and other costs, liquidity, disclosed risks, and possible tax or transaction effects if you later rebalance. The SEC’s Investment Products guidance describes differences among investment products and points investors to considerations such as risk, cost and liquidity.
| Route | What to examine | Diversification question |
|---|---|---|
| Individual stocks | The companies held, the role each is meant to play, and how their exposures relate to the rest of the portfolio. | Does adding a stock introduce a meaningfully different exposure, or increase an existing company, industry or sector concentration? |
| Broad-market or growth funds | The current underlying holdings, fund costs, strategy and relevant disclosed risks. | Do the holdings add breadth relative to other investments, or repeat companies and exposures already owned? |
| Technology, semiconductor or AI-themed funds | Holdings, industry and sector concentration, index methodology or active mandate, costs, liquidity and fund-document disclosures. | Is the fund adding exposure that the portfolio lacks, or deepening a concentration it already has? |
The table is a comparison framework, not a claim that any route is inherently safer or more diversified. The holdings and strategy of a particular investment determine what it contributes in the context of a particular portfolio. A broad fund can overlap substantially with another broad fund; an AI-themed fund can hold multiple companies and still be concentrated in related industries.
Read the strategy, not just the label
For an index fund, review the index it seeks to track and the rules that shape the index. For an actively managed fund, review its stated mandate and the way its documents describe investment risks. Ask what inclusion or weighting rules might cause the fund to cluster in a particular sector or industry. The SEC’s investor bulletin on smart beta, quantitative funds and other non-traditional index funds discusses how non-traditional index approaches can differ from conventional indexes. The term “index fund” alone does not describe every selection or weighting rule.

Compare costs and practical constraints
Check the fee information and other relevant costs in the fund materials, and consider how liquidity fits with the investor’s time horizon and needs. These facts can vary by investment and should be checked in current documents; this guide does not provide a fee, liquidity measure or return comparison for any specific security or fund. If you may later adjust holdings, consider whether a sale could involve transaction costs or tax consequences in your circumstances. A product that looks different by name may not improve diversification enough to justify its costs or the added complexity.
4. Use fund documents to test assumptions
A fund’s stated theme is not a substitute for its prospectus, index information and holdings. One dated example makes the point: the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF summary prospectus says the fund seeks to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. The prospectus filed with the SEC reported that, as of January 31, 2026, the underlying index was concentrated in semiconductors and semiconductor equipment and had significant exposure to the information technology sector. See the SEC-filed summary prospectus.
That date matters: the January 31, 2026 snapshot is evidence about the index on that date, not a statement of current holdings, a guarantee of future composition or a description of every AI fund. It is also not an endorsement of the fund. For an investment decision, consult the current prospectus and holdings, and assess them alongside the other investments in the portfolio.
When reading a fund document, look for the stated objective, the index or management approach, industry or sector concentration disclosures, and stated risks. Then compare those details with the portfolio inventory from the previous section. If the document describes a concentration that is already prominent elsewhere in the portfolio, adding the fund may increase rather than spread that exposure. If the materials do not answer an important question, do not fill the gap with assumptions based on the fund’s name.

5. Decide what role an AI-focused holding would play
Once you know the portfolio’s goal and current exposures, assess any AI-related investment by the role it would serve. The central question is not whether the investment has an AI label; it is whether its underlying exposures and risks fit the allocation you have chosen and differ enough from existing holdings to serve the intended purpose.
- Define the proposed role. State what exposure you are seeking and how it relates to the portfolio’s existing investments.
- Check for duplication. Compare the candidate’s companies, sectors, industries and strategy with current holdings.
- Identify concentration. Consider whether the candidate adds a new source of exposure or intensifies one already present.
- Review costs and liquidity. Use current fund documents or other applicable disclosures rather than inferring costs from the product category.
- Consider the portfolio as a whole. Assess the effect of the proposed holding on the overall allocation and the risk you are prepared to accept, not just its standalone story.
A thematic fund may be one way some investors choose to express a focused investment view, but owning several companies within it does not make it a diversified core holding by default. The appropriate role or size depends on the investor’s circumstances and the rest of the portfolio; the available SEC guidance supplies no universal target for an AI-themed allocation.
6. Set a review and rebalancing rule
Holdings can drift away from a chosen allocation when investments perform differently. Rebalancing is the process of bringing the portfolio back toward its intended risk level. The SEC describes both interval-based reviews and threshold-based approaches, along with selling overweight holdings, buying underweight holdings, or directing new contributions toward underweight categories as possible methods. These are options, not a promise that one method will produce better returns.

A calendar rule means reviewing at a chosen interval. A threshold rule means reviewing when a holding or category moves far enough from its intended allocation to trigger a check. The key is to define the rule in advance, so that a review is not simply a reaction to headlines or a recent price move. This guide does not prescribe a particular review interval or drift threshold; those depend on the allocation, circumstances and costs of acting.
Best Value
Follow a deliberate sequence
- Update the inventory. Use current holdings for individual securities and funds, noting the dates of fund information.
- Compare actual and intended allocations. Check whether the portfolio still matches the plan across its relevant categories and risk exposures.
- Investigate the cause of drift. Determine whether the change reflects investment performance, a change in holdings, a changed goal or a changed ability to tolerate risk.
- Choose a method if an adjustment is appropriate. The SEC describes selling an overweight position, buying an underweight one, or directing new contributions toward underweight categories as possible approaches.
- Account for consequences before trading. Consider transaction fees and tax consequences, as the SEC advises, and use current information to determine what may apply to you.
- Record the decision and next review trigger. Keeping the rule and rationale visible helps distinguish planned maintenance from an impulsive response.
Directing new contributions to underweight categories may be worth considering when it fits the plan, because it is one of the rebalancing approaches described by the SEC. It is not automatically preferable: the suitability and consequences of any action depend on the portfolio and the investor’s circumstances. If rebalancing would involve selling, include costs and tax effects in the decision rather than treating them as an afterthought.
7. Avoid common portfolio-construction mistakes
- Picking a percentage before defining the goal. A target without a time horizon, risk tolerance and overall allocation behind it is not a general rule that can safely be applied to every investor.
- Counting fund names instead of holdings. Different tickers can repeat the same companies, industries or strategies. Compare underlying exposures across accounts.
- Assuming “thematic” means diversified. A narrowly focused fund may offer limited diversification even if it owns multiple companies; read its holdings and disclosures.
- Using a dated snapshot as if it were live. Record the date of a prospectus or holdings list and consult current documents before relying on the information.
- Ignoring the rest of the portfolio. A candidate investment should be assessed by what it adds to existing exposures, not only by what it says it tracks.
- Trading without considering consequences. Review potential transaction fees and tax effects before making a rebalance.
- Confusing a strategy with a forecast. A fund objective or index methodology describes an approach; it does not establish that the investment will outperform or that its risks suit a particular investor.
8. A practical portfolio review checklist
Use this checklist when reviewing an existing portfolio or evaluating a proposed AI-related holding:
- Can I state the goal, time horizon and risk tolerance that guide this portfolio?
- Have I inventoried individual securities and the underlying holdings of every relevant fund?
- Have I checked for repeated companies and related sector or industry exposures?
- Do I understand the fund’s objective, index rules or active mandate, costs and disclosed risks?
- Have I checked the date of the holdings information and consulted current documents?
- Can I explain what new exposure a candidate would add and how it changes the portfolio’s overall risk?
- Have I chosen a calendar or threshold review rule that I can apply consistently?
- Before any adjustment, have I considered transaction fees and possible tax consequences?
A portfolio built around AI-related investments is still a portfolio built around a person’s goal and capacity for risk. A sound process starts with those constraints, looks through fund labels to underlying exposures, and treats rebalancing as a deliberate maintenance decision rather than a prediction about which investment will win.
