Build a dependable morning briefing by running OpenClaw’s self-hosted Gateway on an always-on computer, authorizing only the sources you need, giving the assistant a fixed recap format, and scheduling a recurring automation. Start with one delivery channel, test a manual run, then enable the daily schedule in a private destination.

What a daily recap assistant does
OpenClaw is a self-hosted Gateway and assistant that connects chat channels to an AI agent. The Gateway runs on your computer or server, maintains the configured connections, and can use tools, skills, memory and automation. OpenClaw’s documentation describes it as “a self-hosted gateway that connects your favorite chat apps … to AI coding agents.” For a daily recap, the same system can collect authorized information, summarize it with a repeatable instruction, and deliver the result to one chat channel.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA useful recap normally combines selected mail, calendar entries, files or other supported services. It should answer a small set of questions rather than reproduce every message:
- What requires attention now?
- What is on today’s calendar, including relevant preparation?
- Which deadlines or commitments are approaching?
- Which decisions or follow-ups are still open?
- If nothing is urgent, can the assistant say so plainly?
The workflow is scheduled, not continuously improvisational: collect data for a defined window, apply a stable format, and send the result. This makes omissions easier to spot and prompts easier to improve.

Prerequisites and design decisions
Before installing anything, decide where the Gateway will run, which data it may read, where the briefing will arrive, and what time zone controls the schedule. The command names and workflow described here were checked on 14 October 2026; OpenClaw releases and integration labels can change, so confirm the current documentation during setup.
Use an always-on host
The Gateway must be available when the automation wakes it. A desktop that is often asleep will miss unattended runs. Use an always-on home computer, a small home server, or a VPS category that you control. The host needs network access to the services you authorize and enough storage for OpenClaw’s configuration and run history.

Gmail and Google Calendar are common inputs, and OpenClaw’s official FAQ lists mail and calendar summaries, reminders and follow-ups as suitable assistant projects. You can also authorize files or another supported service, but every additional source expands the permission scope and the amount of sensitive data exposed to the workflow. Begin with the two or three sources that answer your morning questions.
Select one destination first
OpenClaw can connect to Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, Signal, WebChat and other supported channels. Pick the channel you already check reliably. A consumer chat channel is convenient; a self-hosted deployment keeps the Gateway and credentials under your control. Either way, protect the channel account and send the first tests to a private conversation.
Decide how the model will run
OpenClaw can route requests through configured API or subscription providers and can also use local models. Your choice affects recurring cost, latency, data handling and maintenance. A hosted route may be simpler to operate but sends authorized prompt data to that provider. A local model can keep processing on infrastructure you manage, while requiring compatible hardware, model files and upkeep. Compare those factors for your actual provider choices; there is no universal best option.
Install OpenClaw and complete onboarding
Use an official OpenClaw installation path for your platform. The overview lists macOS, Linux, WSL2, Windows, Docker, Nix, npm, pnpm, Bun and source-based options. Select one path that suits the host and keep the installation method consistent so upgrades and service management remain understandable.

- Prepare the host. Apply operating-system updates, create a user account dedicated to the Gateway if practical, and confirm that the machine will remain powered and connected at the recap time.
- Install OpenClaw. Follow the current platform-specific instructions. Do not mix package-manager and source installations unless the documentation explicitly supports that combination.
- Run onboarding. From a terminal, execute
openclaw onboard. Complete the prompts for the Gateway, model route and any initial channel configuration. - Record the operating details. Note the host time zone, the account that runs the Gateway, where credentials are stored, and how you will view logs and run history. These details matter when a scheduled job behaves differently from an interactive test.
- Verify the Gateway. Start it using the method shown by onboarding, then confirm that the process remains running after you close the terminal or disconnect from the host.
Do not proceed to a daily schedule until the Gateway can answer an ordinary message. A schedule cannot repair a Gateway that is stopped, unauthenticated or unable to reach its configured services.
Connect and test a delivery channel
Configure one supported channel before adding Gmail or calendar access. The exact pairing screens vary by channel and release, but the validation sequence is stable.
- Open the channel configuration in the onboarding flow or current OpenClaw settings.
- Pair the account or provide the channel credentials requested by OpenClaw.
- Choose a private chat or workspace destination for testing. Avoid a public group while permissions and formatting are still changing.
- Send a normal, harmless test message.
- Confirm that OpenClaw replies in the same destination and that the reply arrives without manual intervention from the host.
Keep the first deployment to one channel. Multiple destinations make it harder to tell whether a failure comes from the Gateway, the channel, a permission mismatch or the scheduler. Add other channels only after the single-channel path is reliable.
Authorize Gmail, Calendar and other inputs
Connect only the systems required by the briefing. If the recap needs Gmail and Google Calendar, grant those services and no broader file or messaging access than necessary. Follow the integration’s current authorization flow; labels and consent screens can change between releases.

Define the time window
A recap needs a precise boundary. A practical instruction is “since yesterday’s recap,” but you must decide what happens after a missed run. You can instead define a fixed period such as the previous calendar day, provided that period matches how you work. State the time zone explicitly so “today,” “tomorrow” and deadline dates are interpreted correctly.
Set exclusions
Tell the assistant what not to include, such as newsletters, automated receipts, archived project mail or calendars that are informational only. Exclusions reduce noise and limit unnecessary exposure of personal data. Review them whenever your account structure changes.

Require traceable references
When an integration supplies a message link, event link or identifier, require the recap to include it. A reference lets you open the original item instead of trusting a condensed sentence. If a source does not provide a usable link, instruct the assistant to name the subject, sender or event title so you can locate it manually.
Write a constrained recap instruction
A fixed structure produces a more predictable briefing than “summarize everything.” Store the instruction in the assistant’s briefing skill or the configuration location recommended by your OpenClaw version. Keep the wording explicit about scope, ordering and actions.
Use a specification like this as a starting point:
Prepare my daily recap for [time zone] using only the authorized sources. Cover items since the previous successful recap, and state the time window at the top.
- Urgent items: list messages or events that need attention today. For each item, include the source, a concise reason it matters, the sender or organizer when available, and a link or identifier.
- Today’s calendar: list events in local time, including location or meeting link when available. Flag overlaps, short preparation windows and events requiring a response.
- Deadlines: list due dates found in the authorized sources. Distinguish a stated deadline from an inferred one.
- Decisions and follow-ups: identify commitments, unanswered questions and promised actions. Name the owner when the source makes ownership clear.
- Nothing urgent: if no item meets the urgent threshold, write a short sentence saying that nothing urgent was found rather than inventing priorities.
End the instruction with operational boundaries: do not send messages, edit events, delete mail, create tasks or change files unless I explicitly authorize that action in a later message. The recap is read-only by default.
Also tell the assistant to avoid duplicates, separate facts from inferences, preserve dates and times exactly, and keep the output short enough to scan. A length limit is useful, but do not choose a number that truncates links or hides deadlines. If the source set is unavailable, the assistant should say which source failed instead of presenting an apparently complete recap.
Schedule the daily automation
OpenClaw’s scheduler persists jobs, wakes the agent at the requested time, and can deliver output to a chat channel, a webhook or nowhere. The current CLI is openclaw automations; openclaw cron remains an alias. Use the scheduler’s current help and configuration flow rather than copying flags from an older release.
- Run
openclaw automationsand open the scheduler management flow shown by your installation. - Create a recurring automation for the desired morning time. A recurring job is the right fit when the briefing should arrive at an exact time every day.
- Set the reader’s time zone on the job. Do not rely on the host’s default if the host and reader are in different regions.
- Select the constrained recap instruction or briefing skill as the job’s task.
- Choose the private chat destination configured earlier. If the scheduler offers a webhook, use it only when you have a controlled receiver and understand its authentication.
- Define a quiet-hours policy if your channel or household requires one. Decide whether a missed run should be delivered late, skipped, or reported on the next run.
- Save the job, then inspect its persisted schedule and next-run information in the scheduler interface.
Use a recurring automation for a morning briefing. Heartbeat checks and event hooks have different semantics: they are better for reactive monitoring or conditions that genuinely depend on an event. Replacing an exact daily schedule with a heartbeat can produce an unpredictable delivery time and unnecessary runs.

Run a manual recap before enabling delivery
Test the complete path interactively. A manual run reveals source and formatting problems without waiting for the next morning.
- Start the Gateway and verify the delivery channel is reachable.
- Ask for one recap using the exact instruction that the scheduled job will use.
- Check that the stated time window and time zone are correct.
- Compare urgent items with the source mail and calendar. Look for missing messages, duplicated threads, wrong event times and deadlines presented as facts when they were only inferred.
- Open every supplied link or identifier and confirm that it points to the intended source item.
- Check that the assistant made no changes and sent no unsolicited messages.
- Shorten or clarify the instruction, exclusions or source permissions, then repeat the test until the output is dependable.
There is no suitable published accuracy or time-saved benchmark for this workflow. Judge it with your own coverage checks: can you account for the important items in the selected window, and can you explain every omission?
Operate the first scheduled runs safely
Let the first scheduled run deliver to a private destination. Keep the run history so you can see whether the job started, which source failed and whether delivery succeeded. Do not treat a successful chat message as proof that every source was available; a recap can be delivered even when one input returned an error unless the instruction and monitoring make that failure visible.
Review after the first run
- Confirm the job ran at the intended local time.
- Check that the recap names the actual collection window.
- Verify each authorized source appears to have been queried.
- Look for a clear failure notice when a source was unavailable.
- Check that the message fits the channel and preserves links.
- Confirm that no write action occurred.
Adjust one variable at a time
If the recap is too long, tighten the output format before removing important sources. If it misses a source, inspect authorization and integration status before adding more permissive instructions. If it repeats stale items, clarify the successful-run boundary and require duplicate suppression. Changing the prompt, source set and schedule simultaneously makes the cause of an improvement or regression difficult to identify.
Privacy and security controls
A recap concentrates personal and work information in one message, so treat it as sensitive.
- Least privilege: authorize only the mailboxes, calendars, folders or files needed for the briefing.
- Credential protection: keep Gateway and channel credentials out of shell history, shared documents and public logs. Restrict access to the host account and configuration files.
- Private testing: use a one-to-one chat or private workspace until source coverage and redaction are proven.
- Read-only behavior: explicitly prohibit sending, editing, deleting and file changes unless a later instruction authorizes a specific action.
- Data retention: review run history and model-provider retention policies. Remove stored recaps when they are no longer needed.
- Model routing: understand whether authorized content leaves your host when using an API or subscription route. Local processing changes the maintenance burden but can reduce external data transfer.
- Access review: revoke unused channel and source permissions when you stop using an integration.
Common failures and fixes
The recap never arrives
Confirm that the Gateway is running on the always-on host, the automation is enabled, the next-run time is in the intended time zone and the destination remains authorized. Check run history for a job that started but failed during delivery. Send a normal channel message to separate a channel outage from a scheduler problem.
Best Value
The time is wrong
Compare the host time zone, the scheduler time zone and the calendar’s time zone. State the desired zone in the instruction as well as in the job configuration. Re-test around daylight-saving transitions if your region observes them.
Mail or events are missing
Check that the source authorization covers the relevant account and folders, that the time window includes the item, and that exclusions are not too broad. Ask the assistant to report source availability in the recap. Do not grant unrelated permissions as a first fix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The message contains duplicates
Define the boundary as “since the previous successful recap,” require duplicate suppression by message or event identifier, and inspect whether a failed run was incorrectly treated as successful. A fixed calendar-day window may also re-include yesterday’s items by design.
The recap is too long or vague
Keep the five-part structure, require one-line reasons and links, and remove low-value categories before removing urgent items or deadlines. Tell the assistant to distinguish explicit deadlines from guesses and to write “nothing urgent” when appropriate.
The assistant performs an unwanted action
Stop the automation, review the instruction and tool permissions, and restore a read-only configuration. Reauthorize only the minimum sources and run the test in a private destination before scheduling again. The daily recap should not have write authority unless you have a separate, deliberate workflow for it.
Choosing among deployment options
| Decision | Option A | Option B | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input scope | Mail and calendar only | Mail, calendar, files and other services | Broader coverage can improve usefulness but increases permissions exposure and review work. |
| Timing | Recurring automation | Heartbeat or event hook | Recurring jobs fit an exact morning delivery; hooks and heartbeat checks fit reactive conditions. |
| Model route | Hosted API or subscription | Local model | Compare recurring cost, latency, data handling, hardware needs and maintenance for your chosen provider and model. |
| Destination | Consumer chat channel | Controlled webhook or private deployment channel | Chat is convenient to read; a controlled endpoint can offer tighter operational boundaries but requires its own authentication and monitoring. |
| Host | Home computer or server | Always-on VPS category | Both can run unattended; compare availability, operating-system maintenance, network exposure and who controls the credentials. |
When to expand the system
Keep the first version intentionally small. Add another source only when the current recap is accurate enough that you can identify the value of the new information. Add a second delivery channel only after one channel works consistently. If you need reminders, follow-ups or actions, create separate automations with their own permissions rather than quietly turning the recap into a write-capable agent.
