A support agent can remember useful context by saving conversation history or selected customer facts in application-managed storage, then retrieving the right information for that customer in a later conversation. The model does not remember on its own: your application must decide what to save, who can access it, when to retrieve it, and how a customer can correct or delete it.
Choose what the agent should remember
“Memory” can mean two different things. Conversation history preserves earlier messages so a later model call can continue the thread. Curated memory extracts a smaller set of useful facts or a summary for later retrieval. These choices affect relevance, storage, and deletion; they are not interchangeable.

| Approach | What you save | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversation history | Prior user and assistant messages, or a selected portion of them | Continuing a recent support case where exact wording and sequence matter | History grows over time, so sending all of it to every model call can add irrelevant context and cost. You need a retention and truncation policy. |
| Curated memory | Selected facts, preferences, or a concise summary | Carrying forward recurring context across separate cases | Summaries can omit nuance or become stale. You need rules for updating, checking, and deleting derived records. |
| Both, with separate roles | Recent case history plus a small set of longer-lived facts | Support workflows that need both immediate continuity and recurring context | More moving parts: define which source wins when records conflict, and keep deletion in sync across both. |
The OpenAI Agents SDK session guide describes fetching earlier conversation items before a run and saving new user and assistant items afterward. Anthropic’s memory-tool documentation describes a different, application-managed pattern in which a model uses tools to read and write memory files. Neither pattern makes a model a customer database or supplies identity isolation and deletion policy by itself. These documentation descriptions were checked on October 7, 2026.

Build the flow around authenticated identity
The safe unit of memory is a customer or account scope established by your application after authentication—not an identifier the user types into a chat message. Every read, write, update, and delete must enforce the same scope. If your product supports organizations, decide whether a fact belongs to an individual, a shared account, or both.

- Authenticate the request. Resolve the customer and, where relevant, the tenant from trusted authentication data before starting the agent.
- Derive a server-side scope. Build the session or memory key from the verified identity and the relevant case or account. Do not accept a client-supplied memory key as proof of authorization.
- Load only useful context. Fetch the active case history and a small set of relevant longer-term facts. Apply access controls in the application or storage layer, not just in the prompt.
- Call the model with that context. Treat retrieved content as potentially incomplete or outdated. Keep it distinguishable from verified current account data.
- Save the new turn deliberately. Persist the conversation items or update selected memory according to your retention rules. Avoid turning every user statement into a permanent fact.
- Apply customer changes across copies. Correction or deletion should cover the underlying conversation, summaries or extracted facts, and other copies your application controls.
A simplified application flow looks like this. It is conceptual pseudocode, not a drop-in SDK call; the exact session API depends on your implementation.
identity = authenticate(request)
scope = make_scope(identity.customer_id, identity.account_id)
recent_history = session_store.load(scope, case_id)
known_context = memory_store.find_relevant(scope, current_issue)
reply = run_agent(
current_message=request.message,
recent_history=recent_history,
known_context=known_context,
trusted_account_data=fetch_current_data(identity, current_issue)
)
session_store.append(scope, case_id, request.message, reply)
update_memory_only_when_useful(scope, current_issue, reply)
The important property is not the function names: it is that the same authenticated scope governs every operation, and that current business records come from the system that owns them.
Keep durable storage separate from a local demo
The Agents SDK’s MemorySession stores session data in the running process. The guide says it resets when that process exits, and the API reference describes it as intended for demos or tests rather than production. It is useful for validating a conversation flow, but it is not durable memory for a deployed support service.

The SDK guide describes custom session implementations backed by a datastore such as Redis, DynamoDB, SQLite, or another choice. Those are examples, not a universal recommendation. Select a store based on your persistence, operations, access-control, and recovery requirements; a custom implementation can also enforce policies such as retention or encryption. The guide also presents OpenAIConversationsSession as an option, so assess its behavior and settings against your own requirements before choosing it.
Retrieve relevant context, not a customer’s entire past
More stored text does not automatically make a better support response. Retrieve the portion that relates to the current issue, such as the active case and a pertinent preference or prior resolution. Keep irrelevant history out of the prompt, and avoid treating a remembered statement as verified account state.
- Use memory for context: a customer’s stated preference, a recurring issue, or a brief summary of a prior interaction may help tailor the response.
- Use the system of record for authoritative facts: current order status, refund eligibility, subscription state, and similar facts should be fetched from the system that owns them when needed.
- Handle conflicts explicitly: prefer a current, verified record over an older conversational memory, and ask a clarifying question when the discrepancy cannot be resolved safely.
- Control what is written: record only information useful to future support, with a way to revise it when a customer corrects the agent.
Anthropic’s memory tool provides a tool-use mechanism for storing and retrieving information in an application-managed memory-file directory. It is not, by itself, a turnkey customer database: your application still needs to establish identity scope, access checks, retention, and deletion behavior.

Give customers a way to inspect, correct, and delete memory
A clear-memory button is only meaningful if it reaches the records the agent will actually retrieve. Define what clearing means in your product: ending a session, deleting a case history, removing longer-term facts, or some combination. Make those actions visible to customers and make them operate on the applicable stored records and derived summaries.
The Agents SDK session interface includes a clearing operation. OpenAI’s consumer memory documentation also describes review and deletion controls, but controls available in a consumer product do not automatically exist in a custom API application. Implement the controls your own agent needs, and verify that a deleted item cannot reappear through a summary or another store. If your application retains logs or backups, describe their separate handling accurately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Be precise about provider data handling
Using persistent memory in your application and a model provider’s handling of API data are separate questions. OpenAI’s API data-controls documentation says API data is not used to train or improve models unless the customer opts in. The same documentation distinguishes abuse-monitoring logs from application state stored by some API features: default abuse-monitoring retention may be up to 30 days, while state controls and zero-data-retention eligibility vary by endpoint, feature, and settings. It would be inaccurate to reduce this to “the provider stores nothing.” These details were checked in the documentation on October 7, 2026; confirm the current terms and settings for the particular endpoint and features you use.

For your own application, document which data is stored in your session or memory database, which provider feature may hold state, what logs you keep, who can access each layer, and how deletion propagates. A provider’s controls do not delete records in your own database, and your application’s delete action does not necessarily erase provider-side logs or state.
Test the boundaries before calling it production-ready
Test memory as an access-controlled feature, not only as a conversation-quality feature. A friendly answer in a demo does not establish that records are isolated across customers or survive the failures your deployment will encounter.
- Isolation: create two test identities and verify that each can retrieve, change, and delete only its own authorized records.
- Restart and recovery: restart the application and confirm that the chosen durable store behaves as intended; this also makes the difference from process-local demo memory visible.
- Relevance: try a new issue unrelated to an old case and confirm unrelated history is not injected into the response.
- Staleness: change a test account fact in its authoritative system and confirm the agent uses the current value rather than an old remembered statement.
- Correction and deletion: correct a remembered fact, then delete it and check the records and derived summaries the retrieval path can access.
- Outcome measurement: evaluate resolution quality, repeat contacts, and customer feedback on your own support workload with a defined comparison method. No efficacy result follows simply from adding memory.
When to build versus use a support platform
A custom agent gives your team direct control over storage and retrieval, but also makes your team responsible for isolation, retention, deletion, and operational safeguards. A platform can reduce implementation work, but its product capabilities and contract terms need to be checked for the specific deployment. Zendesk describes its own AI agents as able to resolve service inquiries, take multi-step actions through connected systems, and ground responses in customer-defined materials; its statements about third-party LLMs and data protections apply to Zendesk’s product and contracts, not automatically to a separately built agent. These vendor descriptions were checked on October 7, 2026.
