The best 120Hz TV depends on what you connect, how bright your room is, and how much you want to spend. For console gaming, check that the TV accepts 4K at 120Hz on the HDMI input you plan to use; for sports, weigh motion handling, glare and viewing distance; for either, compare native refresh rate, VRR support and the number of high-bandwidth ports. A “120Hz” label alone does not guarantee 4K 120Hz input.
What a 120Hz TV does—and who benefits
A 120Hz panel can refresh its image up to 120 times per second. That matters when the source provides high-frame-rate content: compatible games can run at up to 120 frames per second, and fast sports action can look smoother. A higher refresh rate does not make every movie, broadcast or game run at 120 frames per second; the source and the TV’s supported input mode both matter.

Modern consoles including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 can offer up to 120 fps, according to RTINGS’ gaming-TV guide. For gaming, refresh rate is only part of the experience: variable refresh rate (VRR), response time and input lag are also relevant.

How to choose the right 120Hz TV
1. Confirm native refresh rate and the signal the TV accepts
Look for the native panel refresh rate, then check the supported resolution-and-refresh combinations for the specific HDMI input. Some televisions support higher refresh rates only with particular PC signal formats or at lower resolutions. A motion or marketing number by itself does not establish that the TV accepts a 4K 120Hz signal.

2. Count capable HDMI ports, not just sockets
Check how many inputs support the bandwidth and features required by your console or PC. A TV can have several HDMI sockets but fewer full-bandwidth ports. Also account for eARC: if a port is used for audio equipment, it may no longer be available for a console or computer.
3. Compare gaming responsiveness and VRR
VRR can synchronize the display’s refresh with a game’s changing frame rate, helping reduce tearing. Check which VRR formats the TV supports—such as HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync or G-SYNC—as well as input lag and response time. These are distinct factors; a 120Hz panel does not, on its own, guarantee low input lag or fast pixel response. RTINGS discusses these considerations in its gaming-TV guide.

4. Match the panel and brightness to your room
OLED is a candidate for deep blacks and off-axis viewing. QLED and Mini LED LCD models can be alternatives when brightness and color are priorities. Those labels do not ensure equal performance: compare the particular TV’s measured brightness, reflection handling and viewing angles for the room where it will be used. Samsung’s 2026 lineup guide discusses its own products and is best treated as manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison.
5. Choose screen size around seating and space
Measure the viewing distance and check wall, stand and furniture limits before settling on a size. Samsung’s sports-TV guide suggests multiplying viewing distance in inches by 1.2 to estimate a diagonal for a 40-degree field of view. This is a manufacturer rule of thumb for sports viewing, not a universal requirement.

Compare the same screen size and regional model, then check the retailer’s current price, stock and warranty terms. Prices and inventory change, and a model name can cover regional variants with different specifications.

Which features matter most for your use?
- PS5, Xbox or Switch 2: Prioritize a supported high-refresh input mode at the resolution you intend to use, enough capable HDMI inputs, VRR, input lag and response time.
- PC gaming: Check the refresh-rate modes available at your PC’s output resolution, the relevant VRR support and whether the required input is available for your other devices.
- Sports: Consider motion handling, brightness, reflections, viewing angle, screen size and seating distance. A higher refresh rate is useful only as part of that broader picture.
- Movies and everyday viewing: Do not pay a premium for 120Hz unless you value its gaming or motion benefits; also assess contrast, brightness and viewing conditions for the content you watch.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Confirm that the panel is natively 120Hz or higher.
- Verify the exact resolution and refresh-rate modes supported by the input you will use.
- Count the inputs that support the required bandwidth and features, including the effect of eARC.
- For gaming, check VRR format support, input lag and response time in addition to refresh rate.
- Match brightness, glare handling, viewing angle and size to the room.
- Compare the same size and regional model, and recheck price, stock and warranty when purchasing.
