Plan a custom LEGO PlayStation diorama around one clear focal point: the original console, a game-inspired scene, or a console paired with a removable scene. Choose the shelf space and scale first, sketch the console’s broad silhouette, then build and check the base before adding recognizable features such as the lid, controller, buttons, and scene details. The official LEGO PlayStation set is a useful visual reference, but it is not a custom parts list or a tested recipe for a new build.
Choose what the diorama is meant to show
A display can try to represent the PlayStation console, a moment from a game, or both. Decide which idea should read first from a few steps away. That decision controls how much of your footprint goes to the console, how large the scene can be, and whether a removable section is worth the extra design work.

Make the console the focal point
A console-focused build puts the original PlayStation’s recognizable shape ahead of scenery. This is the best fit if the object itself is what you want people to identify. Give the console enough room to establish its broad body and rounded character; small ports and buttons will not compensate for a silhouette that is hard to recognize.
Make a game-inspired scene the focal point
A scene-led diorama can use the console as context, or omit a full console replica and devote more of the display to a game moment. The official set’s two scene references are Ape Escape and Gran Turismo. They are useful examples of directions a builder might choose, not required subjects for a custom display.

Combine the console and a scene
A combined display can show the console beside a scene, behind it, or as a platform for a detachable scene module. Sketch these arrangements before building. A console plus scenery needs more footprint than either element alone, and a removable part introduces a fit and support problem that a fixed scene does not have.
Set scale and shelf footprint before sourcing parts
Measure the shelf or cabinet where the finished display will go. Reserve space for the full base, not just the console: a controller, scene extension, or projecting section can make the actual footprint larger than the central model. Decide whether the display should sit within that space with room around it or use nearly all of it.
The LEGO product listing for licensed set 72306 gives the modeled console dimensions as approximately 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Treat those measurements as a reference for a near life-size-style display, not a required target. A custom model can be smaller or larger; the important thing is to settle on one scale before laying out the scene or estimating parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a paper sketch or a simple outline on the work surface to represent the planned footprint. Mark the console’s approximate location, the scene area, and any controller or detachable module. This is a planning aid, not a substitute for checking the actual model as it grows: small changes in width or depth can affect whether everything fits.
Compare the main layout choices
| Approach | Footprint and emphasis | Stability and detail trade-off | Scene arrangement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console replica | Most of the display area goes to the console; choose scale to match available shelf space. | Emphasizes a recognizable console shape. The broad body and rounded profile deserve attention before small details. | No game scene is required. |
| Game scene | More room can go to the scene; a full-size-style console may not fit or may be secondary. | Scene elements compete for space, so establish a clear focal point and a stable base. | Usually fixed unless a separate module is designed. |
| Console with removable scene | Needs room for both the console and the scene, plus space to lift or place the removable section. | Requires the builder to plan support and fit as well as appearance; a removable design adds a separate constraint. | Scene can be displayed separately, as demonstrated by the official set’s presentation. |
This is a practical design comparison, not a benchmark of tested custom models. The official product provides an example of a console paired with separate game dioramas; it does not establish how another builder’s model will perform.

Sketch the silhouette and plan the build
Draw the model from above and from the side. The top view helps you divide the footprint between console, scene, and controller. The side view helps you think about height, overhangs, and how the rounded-looking console body will be represented with brick-built forms.
LEGO’s design feature describes the original console’s rounded form and opening lid as design challenges. That is a useful lesson for a custom build: the overall outline and the way the major sections meet matter more to recognition than a dense layer of small decoration. Decide early which contours you can suggest with stepped brick-built surfaces and which details can be simplified at your chosen scale.
Mark the large forms first
- Outline the base and the console’s broad body.
- Indicate the lid or upper surface and any large gaps or changes in height.
- Reserve the space for the controller and its connection to the display.
- Block in the scene as a few large masses before drawing small props.
These marks need not specify exact elements. Their purpose is to keep the build’s proportions and hierarchy clear before you make a parts list. If the sketch is not recognizable as a console or intended scene at this stage, adding tiny features is unlikely to solve the underlying layout problem.
Build a stable base, then establish the console body
Start with the footprint you settled on and build a base that supports the parts resting on it. Check whether a scene, controller, or console section projects beyond the base. Overhangs and detachable components should be considered while the base is still easy to adjust, rather than after small details make changes awkward.
This is general construction guidance, not a claim that a specific custom model has been tested. The right support depends on your design, the elements you choose, and how the display will be handled. Build the large forms in stages and inspect the model from the front, side, and above. If the silhouette or balance looks wrong, revise the structure before adding decorations.

Work from broad shape to surface detail
- Lay out the footprint. Use the sketch to position the console and scene area on the base.
- Build the main body. Establish the console’s width, depth, and height before trying to reproduce small surface features.
- Shape the outline. Adjust stepped edges and upper surfaces until the body reads as the intended rounded console form from the main viewing angle.
- Check support. Look for unsupported projections or areas that may shift when the model is moved. Reinforce or redesign them before proceeding.
- Test the planned arrangement. Place the controller and scene elements where they belong, even if they are only rough placeholders, and confirm that the overall display fits the base.
The official design feature notes that the original console’s rounded form needed design attention in LEGO. Its licensed model can inform your visual decisions, but its construction does not verify that a different arrangement, scale, or mechanism will work in your build.
Add the details that make the PlayStation recognizable
Once the broad body and layout are working, add the details that help identify the console. Prioritize features that remain visible at the scale and viewing distance of the finished display. A controller and the console’s buttons can contribute to recognition; ports and other smaller marks may be worthwhile if they remain legible rather than becoming visual clutter.
The licensed LEGO set includes a controller that plugs into the console and functional Open and Power buttons, according to the official announcement. Those features are examples to study, not a promise that a custom controller connection or moving button will be reliable. If you want a functional or removable feature, reserve room for it in the sketch and treat its fit and support as part of the design from the outset.
Use a detail priority order
- Overall outline: Check the console’s proportions and upper profile.
- Major surfaces: Define the lid and other large divisions in the body.
- Identifying controls: Add the visible buttons and controller placement.
- Small features: Add ports and other fine details only where they are clear at the finished scale.
- Scene elements: Finish the game-inspired setting after the console and main composition are established.
This order helps prevent a common design trap: spending effort on small pieces before the main object has the right shape. It also gives you a point to stop. If the display already reads clearly at its intended viewing distance, additional surface detail may not make it more effective.
Design a fixed or removable game scene
A fixed scene is simpler to position because its relationship to the console does not need to be repeatedly taken apart and reassembled. A removable scene can be displayed separately and makes the presentation more flexible, but it adds a fit requirement: the module must sit where intended and receive adequate support when attached or displayed on its own.

The official PlayStation set models two game dioramas referencing Ape Escape and Gran Turismo, and the scenes can be displayed separately. Use that as a presentation idea rather than assuming the official model’s attachment method can be copied without changes. A different scale, base, or scene shape can require a different solution.
For a fixed scene
- Decide which part of the scene should draw the eye first.
- Keep scene elements within the planned footprint unless an overhang is intentional and supported.
- Check that scenery does not hide the console features you want viewers to notice.
For a removable scene
- Decide where the scene will sit when detached and whether that display position needs its own support.
- Plan its contact points and placement before finishing the console surface around them.
- Check the module in both positions as you build; do not rely on appearance in only one arrangement.
Make the parts list after the design is settled
Do not treat the official set’s piece count as a shopping list for a custom model. Set 72306 contains 1,911 pieces, but the official sources do not publish a custom-build inventory, a tested recipe, or a verified budget for a reader-made diorama. A custom design’s parts depend on its footprint, construction choices, colors, and whether it includes moving or removable elements.
Once the sketch and major forms are stable, record what your own build needs. Group the list by function—base, console body, surface details, controller, and scene—so you can see which choices depend on others. If you change the footprint or scene layout, revisit the relevant portions rather than assuming an earlier estimate still applies.
- Record the intended color and role of each planned element.
- Separate structural parts from decorative parts so you can review support before fine detail.
- Mark any part or feature whose shape or fit is essential to the design.
- Keep the list tied to your current sketch; do not infer exact quantities or cost from the licensed set’s published piece count.
A parts marketplace may help source selected elements once you have a settled inventory, but availability and current prices are not established here. Verify stock and cost against your own list before committing to a design that depends on a particular element.

LEGO and PlayStation announced the set on September 3, 2026. The announcement listed early access for October 1, 2026, general availability for October 4, 2026, and recommended prices of $179.99 USD, €159.99, and £139.99. These were announced prices and release dates, not a guarantee of current price, stock, or availability in every market as of October 13, 2026. The figures describe the licensed set, not the cost of a custom diorama.
The official model can help you judge proportions and see how a console, controller, and game scenes can share a display. It is not evidence for exact custom parts, quantities, build steps, or budget. If your goal is specifically to make your own display, keep your design and sourcing decisions anchored to your chosen footprint and plan.
Review the design before calling it finished
Inspect the model from the same angles from which it will usually be seen. A diorama designed for a shelf may need to read mainly from the front and above; a display viewed from multiple sides needs its rear and sides considered too. Do not add detail everywhere automatically—spend effort where it improves the view the display is meant to present.

- Footprint: Does the whole base fit the intended shelf, including any controller or scene projection?
- Recognition: Does the console read as the intended form before a viewer examines the small details?
- Composition: Is it clear whether the console or the game scene is the focal point?
- Support: Are overhanging and removable sections supported in the arrangement where they will be shown?
- Detail: Are controls and scene elements visible at the model’s chosen scale, or are they obscured by other parts?
If one of these checks fails, return to the relevant design decision: footprint, silhouette, support, or composition. Changing the plan before the model is fully decorated is usually less disruptive than trying to hide a structural or layout issue with more surface detail.
