A benching is a reason to reassess the active five—not proof that any replacement can be registered or will fit immediately. First check the rules for the specific event, then identify the departing player’s responsibilities, compare eligible candidates against the actual gap, and give the new lineup time to integrate.
Start with the event’s roster rules
Before approaching a player or announcing a lineup, establish the outgoing player’s status and check the current rules for the organizer, event, and stage. A benched player may still be registered; a change that makes sense competitively may not be permitted under a particular event’s roster rules or deadlines.

Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 Tournament Operation Requirements define a roster as five specific athletes. For ranked tournaments, the requirements include continuity criteria: at least three participating athletes must have been on the invited roster on the invite date and play in each event match, alongside any other applicable invitation criteria. The applicable version is the one current at the tournament’s Additional Information deadline.
Major rules add constraints that do not automatically apply to every CS2 tournament. Under Valve’s Counter-Strike Major Supplemental Rulebook, the registered roster must match the invited roster, or Core Lineup. A team may optionally register one coach and one substitute; if the substitute replaces a core player, the change must not alter the Core Lineup’s Regional Assignment. The Major rulebook also limits further substitutions after the team returns to its Core Lineup: it must play shorthanded or forfeit if another substitution becomes necessary.

Organizer rules can differ. As one dated example, the July 2026 Update #2 changelog for the ESL Pro Tour Counter-Strike rulebook describes a final roster deadline set by tournament administration, usually 14 days before the first match. It describes five starters, up to five substitutes where applicable, and one coach where applicable; emergency additions are handled case by case. Those details are not universal deadlines or permissions. Use the event’s current rules and instructions to confirm eligibility, submission timing, roster continuity, and any regional or invitation conditions.
Identify what the lineup actually needs
Do not define the vacancy only by the benched player’s label or headline statistics. Write down what that player did for the team, including responsibilities that may be less visible in public match data. Then decide which tasks the remaining four can absorb and which need a dedicated replacement.

- In-game duties: Record the player’s role in the team’s default, executes, mid-round situations, and late rounds.
- Map-specific work: Note positions, opening responsibilities, utility usage, rotations, and any duties that change between maps.
- Communication and decisions: Identify who initiates calls, supplies information, makes adjustments, or supports the in-game leader. These functions may be shared rather than attached to one formal role.
- Redistribution cost: Decide what the other four can take on without undermining their own jobs. If responsibilities are being moved around, the vacancy may involve more than one player’s role.
This inventory is a team-planning method, not a selection formula prescribed by Valve or an organizer. Its purpose is to make the need concrete before comparing names.

| Criterion | What to assess | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Role and map coverage | Fit for the departing player’s duties, including map-specific responsibilities and any work the remaining four cannot take over. | Can this player perform the needed jobs without forcing several disruptive role changes? |
| Communication and decisions | How the candidate shares information, responds to calls, and makes or supports decisions in the team’s structure. | Do their communication habits work with the people who need to coordinate with them? |
| Performance in context | Demonstrated performance considered alongside role, responsibilities, and the team’s needs. | Does the evidence support the specific job you need filled, rather than just a general impression of skill? |
| Eligibility and availability | Whether the candidate can join and be registered under the applicable event rules, and whether their availability matches the team’s schedule. | Can the move actually be completed in time and under the event’s conditions? |
| Integration time | How much practice and review the team can realistically complete before the next match or event deadline. | Is there enough time to learn the candidate’s communication and responsibilities, or does the team need a more immediately familiar fit? |
Use the same questions for every option and write down trade-offs. A candidate with strong individual numbers may still leave the key role uncovered; a player who fits the role may require more time to adapt. Treat performance evidence as one part of the decision, not a replacement for assessing coordination and practical eligibility.

Allow for an adjustment period
A roster change can affect both an individual’s play and the team’s coordination. Zhang, Muric, and Ferrara’s study, Individual and Collective Performance Deteriorate in a New Team: A Case Study of CS:GO Tournaments, examined professional CS:GO tournament data using two natural experiments. The authors report an initial decline in individual and collective performance after a player switched teams, followed by gradual recovery. The study supports allowing for adjustment; it does not establish a guaranteed timeline or a specific expected outcome for a CS2 lineup.
Plan practice and review accordingly. Look at role execution, communication, decision-making, and team coordination over a reasonable sample rather than judging the move solely by its first results. The study is available at arXiv.
