The key is to keep interactive code behind a small Client Component boundary, avoid accessing browser APIs during server prerendering, and preserve the QR symbol’s quiet zone when displaying or exporting it.
Plan the client-side boundary
In the Next.js App Router, pages and layouts are Server Components by default. Use a Client Component for the parts of a QR toolkit that need state, event handlers, lifecycle logic, browser APIs, or custom hooks—for example, a text input whose value updates a generated symbol. Add "use client" at the top of the module that defines that boundary.

The directive affects the module graph: imports and child components beneath that boundary are included in the client bundle. Keep it as narrow as practical. Static instructions, headings, and other content that do not need interaction can remain server-rendered, while the generator itself handles its interactive state.
Account for prerendering
A Client Component is not necessarily rendered only in a browser. Next.js can prerender Client Components to HTML during next build, so code must not assume browser globals exist during rendering. Objects such as window, localStorage, and navigator are unavailable on the server.

Access browser-only APIs during browser execution, such as inside an effect, rather than at module scope or in code that runs while the component renders. If the QR library you select touches browser globals as soon as it is imported or rendered, follow that library’s documented requirements and isolate or dynamically load it as appropriate. The correct treatment depends on the library; there is no universal package-specific fix.
Generate the symbol in the browser
Choose a QR library based on the features the toolkit actually needs. Check its documentation for supported payload characters, output formats and resolution, and how it handles margins. The Next.js and QR Code sources cited here do not establish a particular library, API, file format, or browser-compatibility result, so those details should be verified for the package you use.

If the generator creates the QR symbol locally and does not send the payload in a network request, the generation step itself need not transmit that content to a server. That does not establish that the whole application is private: analytics, remote fonts, or other services could still make network requests. Check the app’s network behavior before making a broader privacy claim.

Choose an error-correction level
QR Code offers four standard error-correction levels: L, M, Q, and H. Raising the level improves correction capability but uses more of the symbol’s data capacity, leaving less room for the payload. DENSO WAVE’s technical guidance says, “Typically, Level M (15%) is most frequently selected.” That is general guidance, not a rule for every use case.

For a toolkit that offers a correction setting, make the trade-off clear to users:
- Correction capability: Higher levels can recover from more damage or obstruction.
- Payload capacity and density: Higher levels consume more capacity. For the same payload, the symbol may need to be denser or larger.
- Use conditions: Consider payload length, the size at which the code will be displayed or printed, and the environment in which it will be scanned.
Do not treat error correction as a substitute for good layout. It does not guarantee that a code with an obstructed finder pattern or missing quiet zone will scan reliably.

Understand payload size and symbol dimensions
QR Code versions range from Version 1, which is 21 × 21 modules, to Version 40, which is 177 × 177 modules; each successive version adds four modules per side. DENSO WAVE does not state a publication year for these figures. The version and resulting dimensions depend on the payload’s length and character type as well as the selected correction level, so there is no single capacity figure that applies to every input.
A short value can fit in a smaller symbol, while a long URL or arbitrary text can require a larger, denser one. When checking a library’s output, confirm that it supports the characters your users may enter and that the resulting symbol remains readable at the intended display or print size. Test actual outputs with the chosen library rather than assuming one fixed maximum length.

Preserve the four-module quiet zone
A regular QR Code requires a clear quiet zone four modules wide on every side, according to DENSO WAVE’s technical guidance. Include that margin in the full area needed to display or print the code; the symbol’s module dimensions alone do not describe its complete footprint.
When configuring a library or styling a preview, ensure the clear border remains intact in the exported image and in any printed version. Avoid cropping the margin or placing nearby text and graphics into it. Evaluate the result at the size and on the medium where people will scan it.
Deploy as a static Next.js site
For an app whose QR generation happens in the browser, Next.js static export can produce assets for a static web server, as long as the routes and features do not depend on an unsupported Next.js runtime. Set output: 'export' in next.config.js, then run a production build with next build. The build emits an out folder containing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript assets that can be served by a web server capable of serving static files.
Static export does not support every Next.js feature. Runtime-dependent features such as Server Actions, cookies, request-dependent route handlers, rewrites, redirects, headers, and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) are unsupported in export mode. If the toolkit needs one of those features, a purely static deployment is not suitable without changing the design or deployment approach.
Review the finished toolkit
Before publishing, evaluate the implementation with the actual QR library and deployment configuration you chose:
