Which has better coverage, AT&T or Verizon?
In Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. Mobile Network Experience report, Verizon scored 9.7 out of 10 for Coverage Experience and AT&T scored 9.3. T-Mobile scored 9.0. Opensignal defines its measure as the extent of mobile networks in the places people live, work, and travel. It is an experience metric, not a percentage of the country covered and not a guarantee of reception at a particular location. Read the January 2026 Opensignal report.

That narrow national lead makes Verizon a reasonable first carrier to check, not an automatic winner for your home, workplace, commute, or rural route. Building materials, terrain, network congestion, device compatibility, and indoor location can all affect the experience. Validate the places that matter to you rather than choosing from a national score alone.

Check both carriers’ coverage maps for the exact addresses and routes you use. One comparison map draws primarily on FCC Broadband Data Collection data released in May 2026, reflecting networks as of December 2025, supplemented by crowdsourced observations. Its coverage is predicted outdoor native-network coverage; it does not show roaming, and indoor signal can be weaker. See the AT&T and Verizon coverage-map comparison.

Read coverage claims by their measure
AT&T says its network covers more than 99% of the U.S. population and its 5G reaches over 316 million people. These are AT&T’s population-based claims, not an independent head-to-head finding or a land-area measurement. AT&T says 5G requires a compatible plan and device; its approximate 5G map includes coverage available as of March 2025. See AT&T’s network information for its qualifications.

There is no reliable single price comparison unless the line count, discounts, taxes, and plan features match. Verizon’s comparison page lists sample one-line starting rates of $45 per month for Simplicity, or $30 with its stated switch discount, and $65 per month for AT&T Value 2.0. It includes AutoPay discounts and says taxes and fees are excluded on most plans. The figures are examples on a Verizon-authored comparison page, not guaranteed checkout totals; confirm current eligibility and the final bill. Check Verizon’s plan comparison and terms.

A July 14, 2026 Reviews.org comparison gives a different AT&T Value 2.0 example: $50 per line under its stated AutoPay and paperless-billing assumptions, alongside Verizon Simplicity at $45 or $30 with AutoPay and a stated switch discount. These are that publication’s plan examples, not directly interchangeable with Verizon’s figures. - Data priority: Check whether the plan includes premium data, any high-speed allowance, and what happens during congestion or after an allowance is used.
- Hotspot: Compare included high-speed hotspot data and the speed, if any, after that allowance.
- Travel: Confirm roaming countries and allowances, plus international calling and texting for your destinations.
- Fees and taxes: Include activation, upgrade, regulatory, and applicable tax charges, as well as device installments.

Is Verizon worth the extra cost?
Only if the service and features you need justify the difference on your actual bill. Verizon’s higher Coverage Experience score is a national measure; it does not establish better service in your specific locations. If Verizon’s local signal is meaningfully better for you, or its included features replace services you already pay for, a higher plan price may be worthwhile. If both networks work similarly where you use your phone, compare total cost and plan limits rather than paying extra for a national ranking.

Does Verizon or AT&T have better rural coverage?
The January 2026 Opensignal result is national and does not settle coverage on a particular rural road or in a particular small community. Check maps for your precise route and destination, and test service where possible. Rural coverage can vary by terrain and location, so a national score cannot substitute for local validation.
How much hotspot data do you get?
Hotspot allowances depend on the specific plan tier, and the supplied carrier comparison describes differences rather than establishing one universal allowance for either carrier. Check each plan’s current terms for the amount of high-speed hotspot data and what speed applies after it is used. Do the same for premium-data treatment, roaming, and fees so the comparison reflects the plan you would actually select.
