Linear, radial, and conic gradients use different geometries, so the generator should offer controls suited to each rather than treating them as interchangeable styles.
What a browser-based generator needs to do
A useful generator connects three things: controls for the gradient, a preview rendered by the browser, and CSS that can be copied into a stylesheet. Its preview is an element styled with the generated value, not a standalone image canvas. CSS gradients are image values generated by the browser and can provide many traditional gradient effects without a separate raster file. They do not replace complex artwork or textures in every case. MDN’s gradient documentation describes the gradient data type and its use.

At minimum, let the user select a gradient type, edit two or more colors, position color stops, and inspect the resulting CSS. Additional controls should reflect the selected geometry: direction for linear gradients; origin, shape, and extent for radial gradients; and center and starting angle for conic gradients.
Choose the gradient by its geometry
| Type | How color moves | Useful controls |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Along an imaginary straight line | Angle or side/corner direction; color stops |
| Radial | Outward from an origin | Center position, shape and size where needed; color stops |
| Conic | Around a center point | Center position, starting angle, angular color stops |
These distinctions are reflected in the CSS functions and their parameters. See MDN’s references for linear gradients, radial gradients, and conic gradients.

Linear: tune direction and stops
A linear gradient transitions along a line. A generator can express its direction as an angle or as a side or corner direction, then let the user place stops along the transition. This is usually the best fit when the intended effect has a clear directional sweep, such as a highlight moving from one edge to another.
Radial: tune origin and extent
A radial gradient radiates from an origin. Let the user move its center and, where the chosen CSS form supports it, adjust shape and size. These controls matter because changing the origin or extent changes how the color spreads across the element, even when the stops stay the same.

Conic: tune center, angle, and angular stops
A conic gradient transitions around a center. MDN describes its default as beginning at the top and proceeding clockwise. A generator should expose the center and starting angle and make stop positions clear as angular values. For predictable, standards-based generated examples, degrees are preferable to percentages: MDN notes that browsers accept percentages, with 100% corresponding to 360 degrees, but that behavior is not in the specification. MDN’s conic-gradient reference documents the function and its syntax.

Make color stops easy to understand
All three gradient families use color stops to define colors and where transitions occur. A stop’s position can change the balance of the blend, so a generator should let users edit both the color and its position rather than only offer a fixed palette. Include at least two stops, and show the generated stop syntax in the CSS output.

CSS also provides repeating forms for each family: repeating-linear-gradient(), repeating-radial-gradient(), and repeating-conic-gradient(). Repeating gradients are useful when the colors and stop spacing should form a recurring pattern. MDN’s gradient overview covers gradient types and repeating variants.
Preview on an element, not an assumed image canvas
A CSS gradient has no intrinsic dimensions or preferred ratio. MDN states, “A CSS gradient has no intrinsic dimensions; i.e., it has no natural or preferred size, nor a preferred ratio.” The element using the gradient determines the rendered area. A preview therefore needs a defined element size or other visible container dimensions; changing those dimensions can change how the gradient appears. It should also make clear that the output is meant to color an element’s background, not create a self-sized image file. MDN’s gradient documentation explains this behavior.

Generate CSS that matches the controls
- Let the user select a type. Offer linear, radial, and conic choices and switch to controls appropriate to that geometry.
- Collect stops. Provide two or more color stops, with editable colors and positions.
- Collect geometry. Use direction for linear, origin and relevant shape or size controls for radial, and center plus starting angle for conic.
- Render the preview. Apply the current gradient to a defined element so the user sees the browser-rendered result at that element’s size.
- Show and copy the CSS. Output the corresponding CSS gradient function with the chosen controls and stop positions. If repeating behavior is selected, use the matching repeating function.
This sequence keeps the preview and code aligned: each user change should update the rendered background and the CSS value together.
Check compatibility at the syntax level
MDN characterizes the CSS gradient data type as widely available since July 2015, and conic-gradient() as widely available since November 2020. Those dates indicate broad availability, not a guarantee that every newer interpolation option or syntax form behaves identically in every browser. If a project must support older browsers, check the exact syntax it uses. MDN also notes that some parts of gradient support vary. Gradient data type compatibility and the conic-gradient compatibility notes provide the relevant context.
