A browser workout tracker can use a camera feed, MediaPipe Pose Landmarker, and exercise-specific logic to estimate body landmarks, count repetitions, and draw feedback on screen. React can manage session controls and the displayed count while a canvas handles frame-by-frame overlays. The key distinction is that pose detection supplies landmark estimates; it does not, by itself, know whether a repetition is complete or whether a movement is safe.
What the tracker does—and what it does not do
The processing pipeline has four jobs: obtain camera frames, estimate a pose, interpret movement over time, and present the result. MediaPipe Pose Landmarker estimates 33 three-dimensional pose landmarks. Its web task accepts image, video, or live-video input and returns landmarks in normalized image coordinates and world coordinates, as described in the Pose Landmarker overview.

- Camera: Ask the user for permission and provide a visible video preview.
- Pose estimation: Send suitable frames to the model and receive landmark positions.
- Exercise interpretation: Turn selected landmarks into a signal, then use time-based rules to determine exercise state and repetitions.
- Feedback: Draw a skeleton or other visual cues and update the session interface.
This can support a workout tracker, but landmarks alone do not constitute a validated form coach. Form judgments require exercise-specific rules or a validated model, and results can vary with camera position, lighting, occlusion, device, browser, model variant, and movement variation.

Set up the browser camera and MediaPipe task
The web JavaScript package is @mediapipe/tasks-vision, and Pose Landmarker also needs a compatible trained model. The official MediaPipe web guide documents IMAGE and VIDEO running modes, including detectForVideo() for video frames. The official web sample lists a device webcam as a prerequisite; an external webcam is not inherently required if the device has a usable camera.

Keep permission and camera failure states explicit in the interface. A user should be able to see when access is waiting, denied, unavailable, or active rather than being left with a blank workout screen. Use a video element as the frame source, and process a frame only when its video time has changed, as the official guide’s example demonstrates. In VIDEO mode, supply timestamps correctly; do not treat a repeated frame as a new moment in the workout.
Keep frame processing out of React’s render loop
React is a good fit for state that changes at human-readable intervals: whether a session is active, the repetition count, the selected exercise, and permission or error messages. A canvas is better suited to drawing an overlay on each processed frame without turning every landmark update into a React state update. This division is an architectural recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate.

There is an important performance constraint: MediaPipe’s web guide says detect() and detectForVideo() run synchronously and block the user interface thread. It recommends considering a worker to move detection off that thread. A worker can improve responsiveness where the target browser and deployment setup support the required workflow; it does not automatically guarantee real-time performance.

Turn landmarks into exercise state
A detected pose is a set of estimated locations, not an exercise event. Select landmarks relevant to the movement and derive a signal such as a joint angle or pose-class probability. For a three-point joint angle, define the joint as point B and the adjacent landmarks as A and C. Compute the angle between vectors BA and BC; its change over time can help distinguish positions in a repetition. The useful thresholds depend on the exercise and should not be presented as universal form standards.

Before changing the exercise state, reject low-confidence observations and smooth noisy measurements. Then use a finite-state machine with separate entry and exit thresholds (hysteresis), so small fluctuations near a boundary do not generate repeated transitions. A squat counter, for example, might move from an upright state to a lowered state and count only when the user returns to the upright state after reaching the lowered one. The transitions and thresholds must be chosen for the intended exercise rather than copied as universal values.
Angle rules versus pose classification
Angle-based rules provide direct control over the signal and state transitions, but require careful exercise-specific threshold choices. Sample-based pose classification instead uses labeled examples to estimate pose classes. MediaPipe’s legacy Pose Classification guide describes smoothing class probabilities and using different entry and exit thresholds to reduce phantom counts when the signal fluctuates. It also emphasizes training examples covering different camera angles, environmental conditions, body shapes, and exercise variations. That guide notes that it is legacy documentation and recommends upgrading to newer MediaPipe Solutions as of May 10, 2023, so treat it as an explanation of the classification approach rather than a current API promise.

Draw feedback without overstating accuracy
Canvas feedback can show detected connections between landmarks, highlight the joint or body region used by an exercise rule, or indicate that a pose is not currently reliable enough to count. Keep the visual meaning tied to what the system actually measures. A line between estimated landmarks shows an estimate; it does not prove correct alignment, injury risk, or exercise quality.

Occluded joints, an unsuitable camera angle, poor lighting, or movement outside the examples used to design the rule can change the signal. What performance numbers can you trust?
The source article for this implementation advertises 60 FPS and sub-15 ms inference, but those are its claims, not independently verified results for representative devices. MediaPipe’s official documentation describes the task and its behavior, not a benchmark for this particular application. A meaningful performance report should name the tested devices and browsers, model variant, input resolution, and measurement method, and should distinguish inference time from end-to-end frame rate.
What happens to camera data?
MediaPipe’s Tasks privacy notice says input processing—such as images and video—takes place on-device and that MediaPipe does not send that input data to Google servers. The same notice says API performance and utilization metrics are sent to Google. This describes MediaPipe Tasks’ handling of its input; it is not a promise that the entire application sends no data. A tracker’s own code, analytics, hosting, or other services need to be assessed separately. See the MediaPipe Tasks web README and privacy notice, last modified June 5, 2026.
