A spin wheel makes a group choice visible, but the wheel’s active entries and settings—not its animation—decide who or what can be selected. Before you spin, explain what is being chosen, which entries are eligible, whether results can repeat, and whether a winner will be removed. A wheel can select randomly; it cannot promise balanced results over a handful of spins.
Choose a suitable job for the wheel
A wheel works well for a routine, low-stakes choice when participants can understand and accept the options: picking a review question, choosing a presentation order, assigning group roles, selecting an activity, or deciding what to have for dinner. The Maricopa Community Colleges Center for Learning and Teaching describes a spinner as “a roulette-style wheel similar to those used for giveaways” and suggests classroom uses such as questions, roles, and activities. Use a wheel to facilitate participation, not to settle individualized or high-stakes decisions. It should not replace safeguarding, accessibility adjustments, professional judgment, legal obligations, or decisions that need to account for a person’s circumstances. Wheel Names’ stated design principles
Set up the choice so people can follow it
Make the options clear and eligible
Use short labels that participants can distinguish. For a name draw, remove people who are absent or otherwise ineligible before the spin. Tell the group what the wheel is selecting and show the active list, so there is no confusion between the visible wheel and the set of entries actually in play.

Make the draw visible
For a classroom activity, load a browser spinner, share or project the screen, and spin where participants can see the entries and result. The Maricopa guide describes this kind of browser-based, screen-shared setup. If you are streaming, keep the list and result on screen long enough for viewers to follow the draw. Wheel of Names documents using its wheel as a browser source in OBS or Streamlabs; that is the vendor’s described setup, not an independently verified integration. Wheel of Names
Explain how eligibility and odds work
Under an equal-entry selection mode, each active entry has the same chance on a single spin. The chance belongs to entries, not necessarily to distinct people or options: adding the same name twice gives it two entries, while disabling or removing an entry makes it ineligible. A weighted mode can also deliberately give entries different chances. State these choices before the draw, especially if duplicates or weighting are intentional. Decide whether repeats are allowed
Independent random spins can select the same entry more than once. Wheel of Names gives a probability example: with 10 entries and 5 spins, the chance of at least one repeated entry is 69.8%. That is an example published in its FAQ, not a guarantee that a repeat will occur. The same FAQ uses a 24.6% chance of getting exactly five heads in ten coin tosses to illustrate why a short random run need not produce an even split. Wheel of Names FAQ
Choose between independent draws and one turn each
If repeat winners are acceptable, leave the pool unchanged between independent spins. If each person should get one turn, announce that winners will be removed and remove each winner consistently before the next draw. This changes the eligible pool after every selection. A history-based rotation or fairness mode also changes eligibility according to past results, so it is not the same as repeatedly drawing from an unchanged pool with equal chances. Run the draw transparently
- Announce the rule. Say what is being selected, who or what is eligible, whether duplicate entries or weighting are used, and whether a winner can appear again.
- Show the final active list and relevant settings. Give participants a chance to see what is in the draw before spinning.
- Spin and display the result. Keep the result visible long enough for the group to confirm it.
- Apply the announced rule consistently. If winners come out, remove each one before the next spin; if repeats are allowed, do not change the pool mid-draw.
For a formal prize draw or another situation where trust matters, retain the announced rules, final list, settings, and result. A timestamped receipt or hash may help document a record, but it does not by itself prove that the original entries were complete, eligible, or uncompromised. Wheel Names: Randomness and Fairness
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the wheel can—and cannot—improve
A visible spin can make a selection easier for a group to follow, and a browser wheel can support classroom activities, event draws, live streams, or everyday choices. Those uses do not establish that wheels measurably improve learning, engagement, fairness, or decision quality. Fairness depends on the rule, eligible entries, and settings being appropriate and applied consistently—not on the animation alone.
