AI’s Impact on Paralegal Careers in 2026: What’s Changing and How to Adapt

AI is changing paralegal work, but current evidence does not show that paralegal careers are about to disappear. Legal professionals report using generative AI for research, document review, summarization, and drafting—tasks that overlap with some paralegal assignments. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment for paralegals and legal assistants to remain essentially flat from 2025 to 2035, while warning that technology, including AI, may limit demand. For paralegals, the practical response is to build strong research and communication skills, learn approved tools, and verify AI-assisted work carefully.

Will AI replace paralegals?

There is no sound basis for a blanket prediction that AI will replace paralegals. The available figures describe occupational projections and reported legal-sector uses of AI; they do not measure how many paralegal jobs AI will eliminate.

BLS projects 404,900 U.S. paralegal and legal-assistant jobs in 2025 and 403,800 in 2035, a rounded employment change of 0%. It projects about 40,800 openings a year on average over that period, mostly because workers leave the occupation or move into other jobs. BLS also says technology, including AI, may improve efficiency and limit demand. These national projections cover paralegals and legal assistants together and do not isolate AI’s effect from other factors. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

The more useful conclusion is that the mix of tasks may change. Routine first-pass research, review, summaries, and drafts are exposed to automation or augmentation. Work that depends on matter-specific context, accurate records, communication, coordination, and accountable review still needs careful human involvement.

Which paralegal tasks are most exposed to AI?

Paralegals support lawyers through factual and legal research, document organization, drafting, client and witness interviews, and preparation for hearings and trials. Duties vary: a small-firm paralegal may support a matter from intake to resolution, while a large-firm role may focus on one phase or workflow. Thomson Reuters’ 2026 AI in Professional Services Report lists these common AI use cases among surveyed legal professionals:

Reported use case Share What it could mean for paralegal work
Legal research 80% AI may help generate search leads or summarize materials, but authorities and propositions still need independent checking.
Document review 74% Tools may help sort or flag material; relevance and exceptions depend on the matter and review instructions.
Document summarization 73% Summaries can speed an initial pass but may omit qualifications, dates, or contradictory facts.
Brief or memo drafting 59% Drafting assistance does not establish that the law is current or that the analysis fits the record.
Correspondence drafting 55% Routine language may be easier to generate, while tone, facts, deadlines, and approval remain important.

These are reported use cases across a surveyed legal-professional population, not paralegal-only adoption rates. Thomson Reuters’ 2026 legal report gathered responses from 736 law-firm professionals in 46 countries, including 421 U.S. responses, in March and April 2026. Exposure is not the same as replacement. A tool that produces a first draft does not necessarily verify a fact, identify a jurisdiction-specific exception, preserve an evidentiary chain, or know what the supervising lawyer needs next. The overlap points to changed workflows, not proof that an entire occupation can be automated.

How widespread is AI use in legal work?

Available adoption data show growing use, but they should not be mistaken for a direct measure of paralegal adoption. In the State Bar of Texas’ 2026 AI in the Practice of Law Survey, 62% of responding Texas attorneys reported using AI, compared with 30% in 2024. The 2026 survey was sent to a random sample of 30,000 licensed Texas attorneys; 1,553 responded, with a stated margin of error of ±2%. Among attorney AI users, 53% identified legal research as their most common AI use. These are Texas attorney findings, not nationwide or paralegal-specific rates. Training is uneven as well. An 8am 2026 Legal Industry Report, summarized in sponsored analysis published by ABA Law Practice Magazine, found that 54% of respondents said their firm had provided no training on responsible generative-AI use and had no current plans to do so. This is a finding from the 8am report, not an ABA survey. ABA Law Practice Magazine

What should paralegals do to adapt?

Make core skills visible

BLS identifies research, detail orientation, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills as important to paralegal work. Demonstrate these through accurate records, clear status updates, reliable deadline tracking, and research that shows how a conclusion is supported—not just a polished final document. Verify every AI-assisted work product

Use AI output as a starting point, not as authority. Before passing work to an attorney, check names, dates, figures, quotations, and factual claims against the matter record. Confirm cited cases, statutes, and other authorities in trusted legal sources, and make sure the cited material actually supports the proposition. For calculations or extracted information, compare the output with the underlying documents.

Follow approved tools and confidentiality rules

Ask which systems and workflows your employer authorizes before entering client or matter information into an AI tool. Clarify rules for confidential and privileged material, permitted inputs, retention, and human review. Security, ethics, privilege, and trust are among the adoption concerns discussed in ABA-published analysis of the 8am report. A tool’s convenience does not override workplace policy or professional obligations. ABA Law Practice Magazine

Build practice-area knowledge alongside tool fluency

Seek experience with the context-rich work around documents: organizing evidence, coordinating deadlines, communicating with clients or witnesses within your role, and understanding how a matter moves through its procedural stages. Developing practice-area knowledge can help you spot missing context and ask better questions when an AI-generated draft looks plausible but incomplete. No particular practice area is established as immune to AI-driven change.

Choose training that fits your starting point

BLS says a typical entry route is an associate degree or certificate in paralegal studies, while some employers may accept other combinations of education and experience. If you are new to the field, compare programs by the legal research, writing, procedure, and practical skills they teach. If you are already working, prioritize employer-approved AI training and exercises tied to your practice area and review standards. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

Where are the professional boundaries?

The American Bar Association defines a paralegal as someone who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. Its guidance states: “Lawyers are ultimately responsible for the work product of paralegals.” AI does not change that accountability or expand a paralegal’s authority. American Bar Association paralegal guidance

Paralegals generally may not give legal advice, represent clients in court, take depositions, or sign pleadings. The applicable rules and any exceptions depend on the jurisdiction and setting, so follow the supervising lawyer’s direction and the controlling local requirements. Using AI to draft an answer does not authorize a paralegal to provide legal advice.

How can you assess whether a role is positioned to change?

Job title alone tells you little about exposure. When evaluating your current position or a new one, consider how the work is actually organized:

  • Task mix: How much time goes to repeatable research and document processing versus client, witness, deadline, and case coordination?
  • Work rules: Is the work mostly governed by stable templates, or does it often require matter- and jurisdiction-specific judgment?
  • Employer support: Are approved tools, training, review protocols, and confidentiality rules clearly provided?
  • Practice area and setting: What procedures, documents, and client needs define the role, and how broad is the paralegal’s involvement in a matter?

These questions help identify where workflows may change and what skills to strengthen. They cannot predict the security of an individual job.

What the 2026 outlook does—and does not—say

BLS reports a median annual wage of $62,890 in May 2025 for paralegals and legal assistants. That is a national occupational median, not a promise of pay for a particular location, employer, specialty, or level of experience. Its 2025–2035 employment projection is likewise national and combines the two job titles. Neither figure measures AI’s independent impact. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

The current evidence supports preparation for a changing task mix, not certainty about mass job loss or guaranteed career growth. Paralegals who combine reliable legal support with careful verification, sound communication, and responsible use of approved technology are better prepared to contribute as workflows evolve.
