Role labels are a framework—not a proven formula for winning.
What makes CS2 roles complementary?
A role describes a responsibility during a round, not a player’s value or a position on the scoreboard. A strong setup connects different jobs: the IGL calls a plan, the entry creates space, support helps that push with utility or a trade, and the rest of the team uses the opening. An AWPer can influence key areas, while a lurker applies pressure or gathers information away from the main group. On the CT side, anchors hold positions while teammates know when and how to rotate.

These jobs can overlap, and one player may take different responsibilities on different maps or sides. A 2025 CS2 role-classification study found distinct behavioral profiles that do not collapse into one numerical index or universal player profile. That supports using roles to describe patterns, not treating them as rigid classes or a guaranteed five-player recipe. Read the CS2 role-classification study.

Before assigning labels, discuss what each player does reliably under pressure and what the team is missing. Look for someone who can communicate and adapt, someone willing to take first contact, and someone who can set up or trade that contact. Consider who can make the AWP useful and who can work independently without losing the timing of the team’s plan. On defense, decide who is responsible for holding each position and who is available to rotate.

- Prioritize behavior over reputation or kill totals: who starts engagements, trades teammates, uses utility, snipes, or handles difficult late-round situations?
- Match primary responsibilities to willingness and consistency, not merely to a role name someone prefers.

What each role contributes—and what to review

Anchor is chiefly a defensive responsibility, not a role that must belong to the same player on every map. Likewise, not every team needs to build its entire game around a star AWPer. The best allocation depends on the players, map and plan.
Make the handoffs explicit for each map and side
Role names become useful when teammates know what to do for one another. For each practiced plan, specify the objective, timing and communication that connect one job to the next.

- IGL to execution: Agree on the call, the cue to start and what information should trigger an adjustment.
- Entry to trade: Decide who follows, what spacing makes a trade possible and whether the goal is a pick, an area of control or a safe disengage.
- Support to entry: Coordinate which utility enables the first contact and when it should arrive.
- Lurk to main group: Set expectations for when the lurker holds, applies pressure or reconnects so the timing serves the round rather than becoming an isolated play.
- AWPer to teammates: Clarify which space the AWP is meant to influence and what support or fallback is available.
- Anchor to rotation: Decide what information calls for help, who can rotate and what coverage remains behind.
Practice a small set of map-specific plans and communication patterns until those handoffs are familiar. This is practical guidance based on the described responsibilities, not a tested promise of improved win rate.

Review rounds for both outcome and behavior. A kill count alone cannot tell you whether an entry made usable space, whether a support player’s utility enabled a teammate, or whether an IGL’s call arrived in time. The 2025 CS2 study discusses behaviors including entrying, trading, opening, clutching, sniping and utility; use them as prompts for discussion, not as a universal score or ranking system. The study’s role assessment does not establish ideal numerical targets.

- Did the opening create space or information the team could use?
- Was the first contact traded or otherwise converted into an advantage?
- Did utility support the intended timing and action?
- Could teammates understand and execute the call?
- Did the lurk connect with the round plan?
- Did the defensive setup hold long enough for a coordinated rotation?
Look for repeated patterns across scrims rather than changing jobs after one bad round. If a mismatch persists, adjust the responsibility or handoff and practice it again. A 2022 preprint analyzing professional CS:GO tournament data reported that individual and collective performance initially declined after team switches and then gradually recovered. It is historical context—not CS2-specific evidence, and not a test of role assignments—so it cannot show how any particular roster should handle changes. Read the CS:GO team-change study.

ESL’s August 21, 2023 guide describes five roles—IGL, entry fragger, AWPer, support and lurker—and offers general Counter-Strike advice, not a controlled experiment on CS2 team composition. A University of Victoria CS:GO research document describes a LAN dataset of 680 games, 18,338 rounds, 267 players and 57 teams; its publication date was not verified. There is no established ideal role distribution, proven win-rate lift from complementary roles or evidence-based number of practice hours in these sources. Build a team around clear responsibilities and practiced handoffs, then judge the arrangement by what happens in your rounds.
