There is no evidence-based budget amount that fits everyone, and the examples available do not establish a price trend for collector’s editions. Your own spending limit and the exact contents of each listing are the useful starting points.
Choose a gaming limit before you shop
Start with money left after essential bills and your savings goals. Choose a monthly or annual period that is easy for you to track, then set a maximum for games and related digital purchases within it. This is a practical planning approach, not a universally validated formula: the right limit depends on your finances and priorities.

Split that allowance into categories you actually use, such as new releases, collector’s editions, older games and optional digital purchases. Keep a running total and include tax and shipping in the price where they apply. If one category is used up, treat that as a reason to wait or shift a later purchase—not a reason to exceed the overall limit.

Spending surveys can provide context, but they are not recommended budgets. Bitkom’s 2026 survey reported that German gamers who did not exclusively play free games spent an average of €334 on computer and video games over the prior 12 months; hardware was excluded. The highest-spending quarter reported an average of €781. The representative survey covered 1,205 people aged 16 and over, including 663 gamers, and was conducted in Germany during calendar weeks 20–24. Know what kind of edition you are comparing
A collector’s edition is typically distinguished by physical extras. Deluxe or Ultimate editions may instead add digital content such as downloadable content (DLC), season passes or in-game items. Naming is not enough to tell you what is included: editions differ by game, retailer and territory, so read the listing for the exact product you intend to buy. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s guide to collector’s editions gives examples of the formats and contents involved.
Check whether the base game is included. Some bundles focus on collectibles, and assuming that the game comes with them can lead to an unexpected extra purchase. Also check whether digital bonuses are tied to a particular platform, account or region, and whether a retailer’s listing matches the edition you want.

Compare the price with the extras you will actually value
Make a short contents list for each edition and mark the items you genuinely want to use, play or display. Possible extras include a figurine, artbook, SteelBook, soundtrack, packaging, digital bonuses or other collectibles. A larger number of items does not automatically mean better value: an extra you will store away or never use may add little to your personal assessment.

- Physical contents: note what each item is and, for display pieces, its dimensions and whether you have space for it.
- Digital content: identify DLC, season passes or in-game items, and check platform or territory restrictions in the listing.
- Game included: verify whether the package contains the base game or only collectibles.
- Individual value to you: distinguish must-have items from extras you would not choose on their own.
- Alternative use of the money: consider whether you would rather put the same amount toward several games or another priority.
Bandai Namco’s examples illustrate why contents matter: cited Elden Ring editions include statues of different sizes, while other packages feature artbooks, SteelBooks and additional collectibles. Compare the actual package rather than assuming that all editions—or all items within them—offer the same kind of value.

Use a preorder check before committing
Pause before ordering and answer these questions plainly:
- Would I still want this game if the extras were not included?
- Which specific extras matter enough to justify the difference in price?
- Does this listing include the game, and is it the correct edition, platform and territory?
- Would I prefer to use this amount for several games or something else?
- Am I comfortable paying now, or would I rather wait for reviews or a possible discount?
The answers turn an appealing bundle into a decision about your priorities and the full cost. They do not predict whether the edition will become cheaper later.

Make waiting and buying fewer releases part of the plan
Waiting for a discount or choosing one release instead of several are reasonable ways to manage a crowded release schedule. In the BCG Global Gaming Survey 2025, as reported in Boston Consulting Group’s Video Gaming Report 2026: The Next Era of Growth, 49% of respondents said they wait for discounts when asked what they do if multiple games in the same franchise release in a year; 31% said they buy one and skip the others. These are survey responses to that specific scenario, not guaranteed savings or observed behavior in every purchase. Read the BCG report for the survey context.
If your main goal is playing rather than owning a particular physical package, a gaming subscription may be an alternative access route. It may not meet a collector’s desire for physical items, and its current price and catalogue need to be checked with the service before making a comparison.

Do not count on resale to make an edition affordable
Buy an edition because its contents and price make sense to you now, not because you expect to recover the cost later. Bandai Namco notes that resale outcomes depend on the title, print run and continuing community interest, and characterizes buying an edition as a financial investment as a gamble. That uncertainty makes a hoped-for future resale price unsuitable as part of a spending plan.
