You can reduce how much websites learn about you, but no browser setting guarantees complete anonymity. For ordinary browsing, Tor Browser is a stronger option than an incognito tab: it hides your normal IP address from the site you visit and is designed to make browser fingerprinting harder. Your choices still matter—logging into a personal account or sharing identifying details can reveal who you are.
What “anonymous” means depends on who is watching
A website, your internet service provider (ISP), someone using your device, and a service provider such as a proxy can each see different parts of your activity. A tool that hides your IP address from a website may not hide the fact that you are using it from your ISP. And a private browsing window may reduce traces left on your device without concealing your activity from websites.

For everyday browsing, a practical goal is to limit what visited sites can link to your identity, reduce tracking, and avoid exposing your normal IP address. This is not a guarantee against a capable observer who can correlate traffic or compromise your device.
Choose the tool that matches what you want to hide
| Option | What it helps with | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Incognito or private window | Reduces browsing history and session data retained locally after you close the window. | Does not hide your IP address, activity, or browser fingerprint from online observers. The FTC explains that cookies can persist until deleted or expired; its page describes cookies on the FTC site, not every site’s cookie behavior. |
| Tor Browser | Routes browser traffic through Tor so sites see a Tor connection rather than your normal source IP; it is designed to reduce tracking and fingerprinting. | Your ISP can see that you connect to Tor. A personal login or identifying form entry can reveal you to a site, and other applications are not automatically covered. Tor Project explains its relay model. |
| Simple proxy | Relays traffic through another server; some proxies encrypt the connection to that provider. | The provider may be able to see both your identity and browsing activity, making it a point of trust. A proxy does not by itself make you anonymous. |
| HTTPS | Encrypts the connection between your browser and the destination website. | Does not by itself conceal your IP address or prevent a site from identifying you when you sign in. HTTPS and routing tools address different parts of the problem. |
Set up Tor Browser for ordinary anonymous browsing
- Get the official Tor Browser. Use the Tor Project’s official download and keep the browser current. The sources here do not establish a specific release number.
- Use it for the browsing you want separated. Tor Browser routes its own traffic through Tor; it does not automatically route every program on your computer through the network. Tor Project’s guidance describes the browser’s protections and limitations.
- Keep the browser’s built-in protections intact. Avoid adding extensions. Extra add-ons can make the browser more distinctive and may undermine protections.
- Keep your identity out of the session. Do not sign into accounts tied to your name or provide your email, phone number, address, or other identifying details if you need to remain unknown to that site.
- Check the address and HTTPS before entering sensitive information. Tor does not remove the need for an encrypted connection between its exit relay and the destination site. Confirm the site address is the one you intended and that the connection uses HTTPS. HTTPS protects the browser-to-site connection.
- Be careful with downloads. Opening downloaded documents in an external application while online can expose information outside the browser’s protections. Avoid BitTorrent over Tor; Tor Project warns that it can expose your IP address. See the Tor Browser security guidance.
How Tor changes who can see your activity
Tor routes browser traffic through relays, separating knowledge of the user’s source from the destination being visited. The destination sees a connection from Tor rather than the user’s normal IP address. Your ISP can still see that your device connects to Tor, and the websites you visit can still identify you through account activity or details you submit. Tor Project describes the design as layered encryption and routing through different servers so that “no single point can reveal both who you are and what you’re doing online.” That is the network’s design goal, not a promise of perfect anonymity.

Where VPNs, proxies, and private windows fall short
Private browsing is mainly about your device
An incognito or private window is useful when you do not want a browser session retained in the same way as ordinary browsing after you close it. It is not an anonymity tool: websites and other online observers can still see activity, and it does not hide your IP address or fingerprint.
A proxy or VPN moves trust to its operator
A VPN or proxy can change which network endpoint a website sees, but it does not automatically make you anonymous. You are relying on the provider, whose visibility and practices matter. The sources cited here do not establish the logging, ownership, or current terms of any particular commercial provider, so do not treat a service label as proof of privacy.

HTTPS protects a connection, not your identity
HTTPS encrypts traffic between the browser and the site, but it does not prevent the site from knowing which account is signed in or hide your source IP by itself. It complements Tor rather than replacing it.

Common mistakes that can undo anonymity
- Signing into a personal account: the site can associate the session with that account, even when you use Tor.
- Entering identifying details: a name, email, phone number, address, or other personal information can identify you directly.
- Assuming every app uses Tor: Tor Browser protects its own browsing, not every application on the computer.
- Installing extra add-ons: extensions can weaken protections or make the browser easier to distinguish.
- Using BitTorrent over Tor: Tor Project warns against it because it may expose your IP.
- Opening downloaded documents externally while online: an external app may connect outside the browser’s protections.
- Confusing a private window with online anonymity: reducing local traces does not hide activity from websites or other online observers.
