Android’s built-in Private DNS setting can route DNS lookups through a filtering provider, which may block some ad and tracker domains without an additional app. It will not remove every ad: filtering works at the domain-lookup layer, so ads delivered from domains shared with wanted content can remain.
What is Private DNS on Android?
Private DNS lets Android use a DNS provider hostname and encrypts DNS questions and answers in transit. Android 9.0 and later includes built-in DNS over TLS support, according to the Android Enterprise Security Paper, updated April 2020.

Private DNS does not automatically filter ads. To block some ad or tracker lookups, you need a provider whose service applies filtering rules. A filtering provider can refuse DNS requests for domains on its active rules; this may affect requests from apps as well as browsers when they use the configured DNS path. For example, AdGuard explains DNS filtering and its limits.
Google’s Android Private DNS guidance puts the scope plainly: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” It is not a VPN, does not encrypt all device traffic, and does not make browsing anonymous or prevent all tracking.

How to block ads on Android without an app
- Open Settings and go to Network & internet > Private DNS, following Google’s documented path. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “Private DNS.” Menu names and locations can vary by device maker and Android version; if the setting is still unavailable, check the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname. Enter the hostname supplied by a DNS filtering provider. The provider’s Android setup instructions should give you the correct hostname; for example, AdGuard documents its Android DNS setup. A provider’s service and configuration determine which blocking rules apply.
- Save the setting. If Android reports a connection problem or apps and sites stop working, switch back to Automatic while you troubleshoot.
Google’s documented choices are Off, Automatic, and Private DNS provider hostname. Automatic uses the network’s available DNS behavior; it is not the same as choosing a custom filtering policy. A custom hostname routes DNS through the service you specify.
Automatic or a custom provider hostname?
| Choice | What it does | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Uses Android’s automatic Private DNS behavior rather than a hostname you specify. | Keeping setup simple or restoring normal network behavior while troubleshooting. | It does not select a custom ad-filtering policy. |
| Private DNS provider hostname | Routes DNS through the named provider; filtering depends on that provider’s service and configuration. | Applying a chosen DNS filtering policy without installing a separate app. | Review the provider’s privacy and logging terms, and check compatibility with your apps and networks. If something breaks, return to Automatic. |
Why Private DNS may not block every ad
DNS filtering acts before a connection is made, by blocking lookups for domains that match a provider’s rules. It cannot inspect or remove ad content delivered through a domain that also serves functions you want to keep. Blocking that whole domain could break the site or app, so some complex ads—including some in-app or video ads—may still appear. The filtering provider’s DNS filtering documentation describes this limitation.

- If a site or app stops loading or behaves unexpectedly after you set a hostname, change Private DNS to Automatic and check whether service returns.
- If the problem disappears, the filtering policy may be blocking a domain the service needs. You can keep Automatic or consult the provider’s configuration guidance for a less restrictive option.
- If ads remain, that does not necessarily mean Private DNS is misconfigured; the ad may not rely on a separately blockable domain lookup.
What this setting does not replace
Private DNS is a DNS transport and provider choice, not a complete privacy or security layer. It does not encrypt page contents or other traffic by itself, stop tracking that does not depend on blocked DNS domains, or guarantee protection on every app or network. Its ad-blocking effect depends on using a filtering hostname and on the provider’s active rules.
