AI is changing mobile apps both behind the scenes and in the features people use. Developers can use AI-assisted tools to generate code, find documentation, and troubleshoot; apps can use models for tasks such as summarizing, refining text, understanding images, and supporting speech or accessibility. The benefits depend on matching each task to the right model and deployment approach—and designing for privacy, uncertainty, device limits, and failure.
Where AI enters mobile app development
Building and maintaining the app
AI tools can assist with routine development work, including generating code, locating relevant resources, and troubleshooting errors. Android’s developer overview describes Gemini in Android Studio and other agentic tools as part of the development workflow. These tools can accelerate parts of a developer’s work, but their presence does not establish a general productivity gain: the sources available here do not show a cross-platform percentage improvement in developer productivity.

AI-generated code still needs review, testing, and integration with the app’s architecture and security requirements. Treat generated suggestions as drafts to validate, not as proof that a feature is correct or safe.

Teams can use platform APIs and model services rather than building every model from scratch. Apple’s Foundation Models framework exposes an on-device foundation model through a native Swift API. Android options described in its developer guidance include on-device Gemini Nano and ML Kit GenAI APIs, as well as cloud and hybrid paths through Firebase AI Logic. Exact availability and capabilities depend on the current documentation, supported devices, and the feature being built.

What AI changes in the app experience
AI is not limited to a chatbot screen. It can be embedded in existing flows to reduce steps, make information easier to act on, or help people access content in a different way.
- Writing and communication: Summarize or refine text, extract key details, and support short, focused dialog.
- Finding and understanding information: Summarize notifications, interpret images, or help users locate important content.
- Speech and audio: Recognize speech or summarize a voice recording.
- Accessibility: Describe images to help people using a screen reader understand visual content.
- App actions: Help a user move from a request to an action, while keeping the action visible and under the user’s control.
Apple’s 2025 Foundation Models framework description names summarization, extraction, text understanding, refinement, short dialog, and creative text as focused tasks. Apple says its on-device model is not intended to serve as a general-world-knowledge chatbot. This distinction matters: a feature should be designed around tasks the selected model can handle, rather than assuming it can answer any question reliably.
On-device, cloud, or hybrid: how to choose
Deployment affects what a feature can do, how it behaves without a connection, what data leaves the phone, and which devices can use it. No single approach is best for every task.

| Approach | Potential advantages | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| On-device | Can support offline use, reduce dependence on network round trips, and keep some processing local. Apple’s documentation describes its on-device model as optimized for low-latency inference and minimal resource use; Android examples include offline image descriptions and audio summaries. | Feature availability and capability depend on supported hardware, operating-system coverage, model resources, and the task. Local processing does not by itself establish that all data stays on the device; inspect the full data flow. |
| Cloud | Can provide access to hosted models and capabilities not available through a particular local model. | Requires a network for the cloud-dependent part of the feature. The product must account for connectivity, latency, data handling, and service behavior. |
| Hybrid | Can combine local processing for some tasks with a cloud service for others. | Requires clear routing and fallback rules. Users and developers need to know which inputs are processed locally and which may be sent elsewhere. |
Make the choice per feature, not as a blanket decision for the whole app. Compare task fit, supported devices, offline behavior, latency, privacy and data handling, evaluation needs, fallback behavior, and development and operating costs. Apple’s and Android’s platform documentation describes different options; it does not establish a universal platform winner.
How to design an AI feature users can understand and control
- Define the task. Specify what the model should do, what information it needs, and what a useful result looks like. Narrow tasks such as summarizing or extracting details are easier to evaluate than an open-ended promise to answer anything.
- Map the data flow. Identify which inputs and outputs are processed on-device, sent to a service, retained, or exposed to other parts of the app. Explain the relevant handling clearly to users.
- Set the user’s role. Show when AI is involved and let people review, edit, dismiss, or confirm consequential outputs and actions. Avoid making generated content look like verified fact when it has not been checked.
- Design for uncertainty. Decide how the interface responds when an answer is incomplete, incorrect, unavailable, or outside the model’s capability. Provide a practical route back to the app’s non-AI workflow.
- Test on intended devices and conditions. Check supported-device coverage, resource constraints, connectivity changes, latency, and offline behavior. A successful prototype on one device does not establish dependable behavior across the app’s target audience.
- Evaluate after release. Monitor feedback and failures in the feature’s real context, and revisit the experience as models and resource requirements change.
Apple’s Generative AI Human Interface Guidelines, published June 9, 2025, advise designers to make AI use clear and prepare for evolving models and limitations. Google’s Google Play guidance says developers are responsible for testing reliability and safety, understanding the models they use, respecting privacy, and monitoring feedback.
Safety, privacy, accessibility, and evaluation
A model’s output is not automatically accurate or appropriate just because it appears inside a polished app. Apple’s machine-learning research discusses evaluation and mitigation for risks including hallucinations and prompt injection. Google’s Play guidance likewise places responsibility for the in-app experience on the developer. Evaluation should therefore test the actual feature and its real context—not just a handful of successful prompts.

- Feedback: Give users a practical way to report a problem and use feedback to identify issues that controlled testing missed.
Accessibility shows how AI can make a concrete difference without becoming the whole interface. Android Developers describes Gemini Nano with multimodality enabling TalkBack to provide image descriptions even when a device is offline or on an unstable connection. That is a platform-described example, not a guarantee that every image description will be complete or correct; the surrounding experience still needs suitable expectations and alternatives.
What reported results do—and do not—show
Google’s Android Developers overview reports that Kakao Mobility used on-device Gemini Nano to streamline address entry and reduced order completion time by 24%. Google also reports lower server costs and enhanced privacy for that implementation. The 24% figure is a result attributed to Google’s case study of that particular service; it is not a prediction for other apps or a general measure of mobile AI’s effect.
A September 2024 report titled “AI in Mobile” said six out of ten smartphone owners had used AI features in a mobile app at least once. It also reported that 56% thought adding AI features to smartphone apps would improve the app experience, while 16% thought it would worsen it. The available report excerpt does not establish the publisher or enough survey methodology to treat those figures as universal population estimates.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
Those examples offer signals about one implementation and reported sentiment, not proof that adding AI improves every app or that users will prefer an AI feature. The cited material does not establish a general percentage improvement in developer productivity or overall user satisfaction.
What to expect next
The direction is toward AI becoming part of both the development toolkit and ordinary app workflows, with models available on-device, through cloud services, or in combinations of the two. For users, the meaningful change is not simply that an app can generate text: it is whether a well-scoped feature makes a task easier, works under the conditions people actually face, and remains understandable and controllable when the model is uncertain or unavailable.
