To stop repeated calls, choose the control that matches the number: an unsaved number is not necessarily private, and suspected spam is a separate category. On iPhone, call screening and silence options can handle numbers not saved in Contacts. In Google’s Phone app on Android, the Unknown switch blocks only private or unidentified numbers—not every number missing from your contacts. For one persistent caller, block that number from your call history.
Know which kind of caller you want to stop
- Unsaved number: The caller’s number is visible, but it is not in your contacts. It could be a legitimate new caller, such as a school, clinic, or delivery driver.
- Private or unidentified number: The caller’s number is withheld or unavailable to the phone app. This is the category Google Phone’s Unknown setting blocks.
- Suspected spam: A carrier or caller-identification service flags the call as potential spam or fraud. Spam filtering relies on those identification signals; it is not the same as blocking every unsaved number.
- One repeat caller: If the number is visible, block that number directly rather than silencing all callers outside your contacts.
Silencing or filtering a call does not always reject it. Depending on the setting, the phone may send it to voicemail or place it in a separate list. The precise outcome and record location differ by platform.

Choose the right option
| Caller type | iPhone | Google Phone app on Android |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers not saved in contacts | Call screening can ask why the caller is calling; Silence sends the call to voicemail. An Unknown Callers filter can move calls to a separate list. Block or screen calls on iPhone
Choose how unsaved callers are handled
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Select the available call screening option. Apple lists Never, Ask Reason for Calling, and Silence: Never leaves calls from unsaved numbers ringing normally; Ask Reason for Calling screens callers before the phone rings; Silence sends calls to voicemail and shows them in Recents. Options and labels depend on iOS version. See Apple’s screening and blocking guide.
Use separate lists for unknown calls or spam
In Settings > Apps > Phone, check for an Unknown Callers filter and a Spam filter. The Unknown Callers filter moves calls from unknown numbers to an Unknown Callers list. The Spam filter silences calls that the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud and moves them to a Spam list. These filters do not have the same meaning: one is based on unknown callers, while the other depends on carrier identification. Availability and labels can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s unknown caller options.

Block an identified caller

- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Keep legitimate calls accessible
Add important numbers to Contacts so they are easier to recognize and less likely to be treated as unknown. Apple notes that call screening is turned off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. On versions earlier than iOS 17, Live Voicemail also needs to be enabled for call screening; calls are not screened while roaming. Those caveats matter if you rely on screening while traveling or use an older iOS version. Apple documents these conditions.

What changes on other Android phones?
The steps above apply to Google’s Phone app. Android menus and call controls vary by manufacturer and installed phone app, and a carrier may provide its own spam controls. Do not assume that a setting called Unknown on another phone has the same definition as Google Phone’s setting.
On supported Pixel phones, Google Call Screen can ask certain unknown callers who they are and why they are calling before the phone rings. Google documents automatic Call Screen in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 or later. It declines calls identified as spam without alerting you; callers it does not identify as spam can ring after responding. Availability is not established for every Android device or region. See Google’s Pixel Call Screen guidance.
