To block purchases on an Apple TV 4K, turn on Restrictions and set a four-digit passcode: open Settings > General > Restrictions, then restrict purchasing or renting. A password prompt is a separate safeguard: it can confirm an allowed purchase, but it does not block the purchase category.
If you mean the Apple TV app on a smart TV or another living-room device, use that app’s profile settings instead. Its controls and availability differ from Apple TV 4K settings.

Block purchases on Apple TV 4K
- Open Restrictions. On the Apple TV 4K, either hold the TV button to open Control Center and select Restrictions, or go to Settings > General > Restrictions.
- Turn on Restrictions and create a four-digit passcode. The passcode is required to set or override restrictions.
- Select the purchase activity to restrict, such as purchasing or renting TV shows, movies, or apps, including in-app purchases. Access to a restricted activity then requires the passcode.
Keep the passcode private and store it somewhere secure for the responsible adult. Apple notes that labels and availability can vary by device, software version, and region. Apple’s Apple TV 4K restrictions guide explains the device controls.
Add a password prompt for purchases
On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > [account]’s Account > Require Password. Set the password preference for purchases and free downloads. Apple documents options to require a password for every purchase or every 15 minutes; password protection can also be turned off for free and paid items on Apple TV. The choices may depend on account settings.

This is an authentication check, not a category-level block. Use Restrictions to disallow purchases or rentals; use Require Password as an added check for activities that remain allowed. Apple’s password settings guide describes the available choices.
Use the Apple TV app on a smart TV or other living-room device
These steps apply to supported devices running the Apple TV app, not the Apple TV 4K’s tvOS Settings menu.

- Open the Apple TV app and open its sidebar.
- Choose Settings > Profiles, then select a profile linked to an Apple Account.
- Choose Purchases and set the password requirement to Always, After 15 Minutes, or Never, as available.
Apple also documents Restrictions and Require 4-Digit Code profile options. For purchase and rental restrictions, open Settings > Profiles > [profile] > Restrictions and choose Purchases and Rentals. Know what these controls do—and do not cover
- Apple TV 4K Restrictions: Restrict specified purchase or rental activities on the device with a passcode.
- Require Password: Prompt for the account password before an allowed purchase or download, according to the selected interval.
- Apple TV app profile controls: Apply the available purchase, password, and content settings within that app and profile.
- Third-party apps: Apple warns that Apple TV 4K restrictions may not apply to apps downloaded from the App Store. For activity outside the Apple TV app, check the individual app’s settings or the Apple TV Settings app’s Apps section. If a charge came from a streaming service app, review that service’s account and billing controls as well.
Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide explains the limits of device restrictions. Screen Time instructions for iPhone and iPad are a different procedure and should not be followed as the Apple TV 4K path.
