Amazon Project Kuiper Explained: What Amazon Leo Is and When It May Be Available

Amazon’s Project Kuiper is now Amazon Leo, a low Earth orbit broadband network being deployed. Here’s how it works, what Amazon has announced, and what customers still need to verify.

Project Kuiper is now called Amazon Leo: Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network, designed to bring internet connectivity to places terrestrial networks do not reach well. The system is being deployed, but a planned 2026 initial service rollout does not mean service is open everywhere—or that consumer plans, prices, and ordering are settled.

What is Amazon Project Kuiper?

Project Kuiper was the name Amazon used for its satellite internet initiative; Amazon announced the name change to Amazon Leo on November 13, 2025. The network is intended to connect homes, businesses, governments, and mobile users through satellites in low Earth orbit. Amazon’s current overview describes a constellation of more than 3,000 satellites. That is the network’s intended scale, not the number currently in orbit.

The aim is to extend connectivity beyond the practical reach of existing networks, including in remote areas. The need is substantial: 2.6 billion people worldwide still lacked broadband access, according to a United Nations estimate reported by Amazon in 2026. That figure describes the global access gap; it does not establish how many people Amazon Leo will serve.

How does Amazon Leo work?

Amazon describes three connected parts: satellites orbiting Earth, gateway stations linked to terrestrial networks, and customer antennas that communicate with the satellites. The gateways connect to AWS regions over dedicated fiber. From there, traffic can reach the public internet, AWS resources, private networks, or other cloud providers. Enterprise traffic may therefore use the satellite link as part of a wider network rather than simply connecting a user to a home internet plan.

This is Amazon’s account of its architecture, not an independent measurement of network performance. Its technical explanation of Project Kuiper and AWS, published in 2023 and updated to note the later rename, describes those links and possible traffic paths.

When will Amazon Kuiper be available?

Amazon says full-scale satellite deployment began in April 2025. In an update dated June 5, 2026, the company reported that it had deployed more than 330 satellites across 12 missions and had secured more than 100 launches across five rocket types. The launch vehicles named were Atlas V, Ariane 6, Falcon 9, Vulcan Centaur, and New Glenn. Secured launches are part of the deployment plan; they should not be read as launches already completed.

The June update said an initial service rollout was planned during 2026. Amazon’s overview also describes the rollout as underway, with launches involving Arianespace, Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance. These milestones indicate an active buildout, not full-scale operation or universal availability. The satellite count and rollout status can change as new missions occur.

As of October 9, 2026, the official sources cited here do not establish which countries or customer groups can sign up, whether residential customers can order service, or what service and equipment will cost. A rollout target is not the same as an open sign-up date; prospective customers should check Amazon’s current customer-facing availability information for their location.

How fast is Amazon Leo internet?

Amazon’s November 2025 enterprise announcement lists three customer antenna tiers: Leo Nano, Leo Pro, and Leo Ultra. For Leo Ultra, Amazon advertises speeds of up to 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload. These are manufacturer-stated maximum capabilities, not independently tested customer speeds or a guarantee of what a household will receive.

Amazon describes Ultra as an advanced phased-array terminal with weather-resistant construction, integrated hardware without moving parts, and enterprise networking features. The company said select business customers could test production hardware and software in an enterprise preview. That announcement supports a limited business preview at the time; it does not establish general consumer availability or public retail ordering for any antenna tier. Details and specifications appear in Amazon’s November 24, 2025 product announcement.

What is Amazon Leo’s direct-to-device plan?

Amazon’s satellite plans also include mobile connectivity, but the future phone network should not be confused with current broadband service. On April 14, 2026, Amazon announced a definitive agreement to acquire Globalstar and a separate agreement with Apple to support satellite services on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models. The announcement establishes agreements, not that the acquisition has been completed or that all planned services are already operating.

Amazon says its own next-generation direct-to-device system is planned to begin deployment in 2028. It intends to work with mobile network operators to extend voice, text, and data beyond terrestrial coverage. Those capabilities remain future plans in the cited announcement. See the Amazon and Globalstar announcement for the stated transaction and partnership terms.

What does Amazon Leo mean for businesses and aviation?

Amazon is pursuing enterprise and government connectivity as well as consumer broadband. Its Ultra announcement describes enterprise networking functions and names JetBlue among business customers or partners. Amazon’s June 2026 deployment update identifies aviation and mobility as intended service segments. These examples show the kinds of uses the company is pursuing; they do not establish a consumer airline connectivity offer, a service launch date for a particular operator, or availability to every business.

What has been approved, and what remains a policy debate?

Amazon reported in 2019 that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission had approved a 3,236-satellite Project Kuiper constellation for service in the United States. This is a historical account of a U.S. authorization, not a complete picture of current licensing, deployment conditions, or permissions in other countries. The original announcement is available in Amazon’s FCC approval notice.

In a March 2026 policy commentary, Amazon argued that international spectrum coordination and existing equivalent power-flux density (EPFD) rules constrain newer non-geostationary satellite systems. That is the company’s position in a policy debate, not a neutral regulator’s finding. Its commentary is at Amazon’s article on satellite rules and the digital divide.

Can you compare Amazon Leo with Starlink?

A fair provider comparison requires current, like-for-like information on service geography, availability, monthly and equipment charges, measured as well as advertised speeds, latency, data limits or prioritization, installation, portability, and customer support. The Amazon sources cited here do not establish those customer terms for Amazon Leo, and they do not provide comparable current terms or performance data for another provider. A confident ranking or price comparison would therefore be premature.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
