To block browser pop-up windows in iPhone Safari, go to Settings > Apps > Safari and turn on Block Pop-ups. On Android Chrome, open More > Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects and turn the control off. These settings can stop new windows and redirects, but they do not necessarily remove ads displayed inside a game page. To reduce cross-site tracking, use the browser’s tracking protection or third-party-cookie controls, understanding that stricter privacy settings can interfere with some games.
First identify what is interrupting your game
“Pop-up” can describe several different things on a phone, and each requires a different control. A new browser window or a redirect is not the same as an advertisement embedded in the game page, and neither is the same as a notification sent by a website. Identifying which one you are seeing helps avoid changing a setting that cannot address the problem.

- A new browser window or redirect: use the browser’s pop-up and redirect setting.
- An alert that appears outside the game or returns when the browser is closed: check whether the site has permission to send notifications.
- An ad displayed within the game page: the pop-up control may not affect it. It may be part of the page itself.
- Ads that seem unusually tailored across sites: review tracking protection and third-party-cookie settings.
Google Chrome Help cautions that “Not all pop-ups are ads or spam.” A trusted site may use a separate window for a feature you want, so the aim is to block unwanted interruptions without automatically disabling every site function. That distinction matters in games: a window that opens after you intentionally tap a game feature is different from a page that opens unexpectedly or redirects you away from play.

Take note of when the interruption occurs and what it looks like before changing settings. Does it open a fresh browser page or tab? Does it appear as a notification outside the browser? Or does an ad occupy part of the game page without opening anything? These clues do not prove why a site is doing it, but they help you choose the relevant control. A pop-up blocker is not a universal ad-removal switch, and a tracking setting is not a replacement for notification controls.

Block pop-up windows on iPhone Safari
Apple Support’s iPhone instructions place Safari’s pop-up control in the iPhone Settings app, rather than in the game. To switch it on:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Block Pop-ups.
Once enabled, the setting applies to Safari pop-up windows. It does not promise to remove every advertisement shown within a game page, because an ad displayed as part of the page is not necessarily a separate window. If an interruption remains, note whether it opens a new browser window, appears as a notification, or is simply part of the page before changing other settings.
If the game appears to need a separate window for a feature you deliberately selected, consider whether you trust the site and actually need that feature before changing protection. Avoid turning off the blocker across the board just to make one game prompt go away. The goal is to address a specific function, not to assume every window is safe or every window is malicious.
If a page displays a suspicious warning or an unexpected prompt, do not tap it just to make it go away. Close the page or browser tab if possible, then review the site’s permissions and Safari privacy options rather than following instructions in the alert. A message shown by a page is not the same thing as a system setting; treat unexpected requests cautiously and make changes from the browser or device settings instead.
Block pop-ups and redirects on Android Chrome
Chrome’s Android setting controls whether sites can open pop-up windows and redirects. To turn it off:
- Open Chrome and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Site Settings.
- Tap Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn the setting off to block pop-ups and redirects.
Chrome may indicate a blocked pop-up in the address bar. That indicator can help explain why a feature did not open, but it does not tell you whether you should allow the site. If you intentionally used a feature that needs a separate window, decide whether the site is one you trust and whether the feature is worth enabling.
Chrome supports site-specific handling, so an exception can be limited to the site that needs a feature rather than opening the door for every site. Use an exception only when you trust the site and need the specific function. If you no longer need the feature, remove the exception or restore the general blocking setting. Avoid allowing pop-ups broadly just because one page asks; a page’s request is not a reason to grant every site the same permission.

That caveat is not an instruction to allow all pop-ups. Instead, keep the general control in its protective position and handle a trusted site individually if it genuinely needs a window. If the problem is an in-page ad, an exception is unlikely to address the underlying issue because the ad may not be a pop-up in the first place.

Stop site notifications separately
A notification can look like a pop-up even though it is not a new browser window. If alerts continue after pop-ups are blocked—or appear outside the game—review notification permissions for the site. In Android Chrome, site permissions are managed in More > Settings > Site Settings; use the notification controls to review or change permission for the individual site.
Turn off notifications for a game site you do not want to hear from. If you choose to allow notifications, do so only when you trust the site and want its alerts. Blocking pop-up windows does not, by itself, revoke a notification permission, so treat those as separate settings. Similarly, changing notification permission will not remove an advertisement embedded in the game page.
When reviewing permissions, focus on the site that is sending the unwanted alert rather than assuming the entire browser is responsible. Site-level controls let you change the permission for that individual site. If you recognize the game and want its alerts, keeping permission may be reasonable; if you do not recognize the site or have no use for its notifications, revoke it. Do not grant notification access simply because a game presents a prompt during play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReduce cross-site tracking without disabling every cookie
Android Chrome: block third-party cookies
Third-party cookies can be used by embedded sites to personalize ads and learn about activity across different sites. Chrome lets Android users block them at Settings > Site settings > Third-party cookies. Blocking these cookies can reduce one way sites track activity, but it can also stop some sites or embedded game features from working as expected.
A game page may include content or services from outside the site you opened. If those embedded parts rely on third-party cookies, blocking the cookies can affect behavior even if the main game page still loads. For example, a feature may stop working as expected or the site may behave differently. The setting is a trade-off: it can limit a mechanism used for cross-site activity, but it is not a guarantee that all tracking stops, and it may introduce compatibility problems.
If a particular game fails after you change the setting, use Chrome’s site-specific exception options for that trusted site if available, rather than weakening the cookie setting for every site. Recheck the game afterward; if it still fails, the cause may be another site permission or compatibility issue. Avoid concluding that third-party cookies are necessarily the cause just because the timing matches; restore or adjust only what you need to test, and keep the change narrow.
Do not treat cookie blocking and pop-up blocking as interchangeable. The pop-up control concerns windows and redirects; the cookie setting concerns a type of information that sites may use across contexts. If the interruption is a new window, start with the pop-up control. If the concern is activity following you across sites, third-party-cookie controls are more relevant, while still carrying the possibility that game functions will change.
Firefox for iOS: Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox for iOS offers Enhanced Tracking Protection, which is intended to reduce targeted ads and help prevent advertisers from tracking browsing. Mozilla Support warns that tracking protection can affect site functionality. If a game stops loading or a feature breaks after protection is enabled, check the protection controls available for that site in your current version rather than assuming the browser is broken or that every game will behave alike.

Mozilla has also described an ad blocker for Firefox on iOS that works alongside its existing privacy protection. The feature was announced as rolling out, and Mozilla explicitly says it will not block every ad. Check the current Firefox version and its settings to see whether the feature is available to you; do not assume it removes ads from every mobile browser game. Availability and behavior should be checked in the app you actually use, rather than inferred from an announcement.
Tracking protection and ad blocking are related but not identical ideas. Protection can reduce certain forms of tracking, while an ad blocker can address some ads; neither description promises that all advertisements disappear or that every site feature remains unaffected. When you compare browsers, look for the controls actually offered in your version and consider whether the game continues to work with them enabled. There is no supported basis for assigning one browser a universal success rate for mobile-game ads.
How the available controls differ
| Browser and platform | Pop-up control | Tracking or ad-related controls | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari on iPhone | Settings > Apps > Safari > Block Pop-ups | Apple Support’s cited iPhone instruction establishes the pop-up control; it does not establish that this setting blocks in-page ads. | Blocking pop-ups does not mean every ad inside a game disappears. |
| Chrome on Android | More > Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects; turn the control off. | Settings > Site settings > Third-party cookies provides a cookie control relevant to cross-site tracking. | Blocking third-party cookies can affect site behavior; Chrome also permits site-level handling for trusted sites and features. |
| Firefox on iOS | A specific pop-up path is not stated in Mozilla’s cited material. | Enhanced Tracking Protection; Mozilla has described an iOS ad blocker as a rollout. | Tracking protection can affect functionality, and the ad blocker will not block every ad. Check availability in the current version. |
These controls are not directly comparable by a published success rate. Google, Apple, and Mozilla’s cited material describes settings, behavior, and limitations, not a measured benchmark for how effectively each browser blocks advertising in mobile games. A percentage or browser ranking would therefore be misleading. A practical comparison is about what control exists on your platform, whether it is enabled, what tracking option is available, and whether your game still works with the option in place.
For a useful comparison, ask four questions: Can this browser block pop-ups or redirects? What tracking protection or third-party-cookie control can I use? Is an additional ad-blocking feature available in my current version? Does the game continue to work when the stricter option is enabled? Also check whether you granted the game notifications, because that permission can cause interruptions independently of pop-up behavior.
When a game breaks or interruptions continue
The game opens a feature in a separate window
Check whether the blocked item is a feature you intentionally opened, such as a separate game function. On Chrome, review the address-bar indication and consider a site-specific exception only if you trust the site and need that feature. Keep the general blocker on for other sites. If the window appeared without an action you intended, do not grant an exception merely to silence the prompt.
Test the feature after making a narrow exception. If it works, you can decide whether the convenience is worth keeping the exception. If it does not, remove the exception rather than weakening protection further without a clear reason. A pop-up exception is for a window-related need; it will not necessarily solve a problem caused by cookies, tracking protection, notifications, or page content.
Alerts continue although pop-ups are blocked
Review the game site’s notification permission separately. A permission to send notifications can remain in place even when the browser blocks new windows. Revoke permission for sites whose alerts you do not want. If an alert appears outside the browser, that is a strong reason to check notifications rather than repeatedly toggling the pop-up control.

The game fails after tracking protection changes
Some sites depend on cookies or embedded services for features to work. If the failure began after blocking third-party cookies or enabling tracking protection, use a site-specific exception where the browser offers one. This narrows the compatibility change to the site you trust instead of reducing protection everywhere.
Check whether the game’s core page or only one feature is affected. If a site-specific setting is available, make the exception for that site and test again. If the problem remains, do not assume that every privacy control should be turned off; the cause may be another permission or a compatibility issue. The useful balance is the strongest setting that still allows the feature you choose to use.
Ads remain visible inside the game
A pop-up blocker controls browser windows and redirects; it does not guarantee removal of advertisements rendered within a page. Likewise, Mozilla’s announced Firefox for iOS ad blocker is not described as blocking every ad. Do not infer that the blocker is broken simply because an in-page ad remains. Identify whether the ad is part of the game page and set expectations accordingly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the ad is embedded in the page, repeatedly changing pop-up settings is unlikely to address it. The controls described here limit specific browser behaviors and tracking mechanisms; they do not promise an ad-free game. Avoid installing or paying for a separate product on the assumption that it will solve every in-page ad or tracking issue: the settings discussed here do not establish that a VPN, DNS service, or physical accessory reliably blocks browser-game ads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Not Track is not a substitute for blocking
Chrome’s Do Not Track option sends websites a request not to track browsing. Google Chrome Help says most websites and services do not change their behavior in response, so enabling it is not equivalent to blocking pop-ups, cookies, or trackers. Treat it as a request, not as a guarantee that a game or advertiser will stop collecting activity.
This distinction helps avoid a false sense of protection. A request does not control whether a site opens a window, whether you granted notification permission, or whether third-party cookies are blocked. Use the setting only with the understanding that sites may not honor it, and use the specific browser controls relevant to the interruption or tracking concern you have.
A practical privacy setup for mobile browser games
- Turn on Safari’s pop-up blocker on iPhone or turn off pop-ups and redirects in Android Chrome.
- When something still interrupts play, determine whether it is a window, a notification, or an ad displayed inside the page.
- Revoke notification permission for game sites whose alerts you do not want.
- Use available tracking protection or block third-party cookies if reducing cross-site tracking matters to you.
- If the game loses a needed feature, add a site-specific exception only for a site you trust, then test the feature again.
Make changes in a deliberate order: first address windows and redirects, then check notifications if alerts persist, and then consider tracking controls if cross-site activity is the concern. Test the game after each change. That sequence avoids confusing one kind of protection with another and makes it easier to reverse a setting that interferes with a feature you want.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning on a pop-up blocker remove every ad in a mobile browser game?
No. A pop-up blocker controls browser windows and redirects. An advertisement displayed within the game page may remain, and Mozilla says its Firefox for iOS ad blocker will not block every ad.
Why do game alerts continue after I block pop-ups?
They may be site notifications, which are separate from new browser windows. In Android Chrome, review the individual site’s notification permission under More > Settings > Site Settings and revoke it if you do not want alerts.
How do I block pop-ups in Safari on an iPhone?
Open Settings > Apps > Safari, then turn on Block Pop-ups. This blocks pop-up windows; Apple’s instruction does not promise to remove ads displayed inside a game page.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I block pop-ups in Android Chrome?
Open More > Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects, then turn the control off. Chrome may indicate a blocked pop-up in the address bar.
Could blocking third-party cookies stop a game from working?
Yes. Google says some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked. If a trusted game breaks, consider a site-specific exception where available instead of weakening the setting everywhere.
Does Do Not Track prevent a game site from tracking me?
It is a request, not a guaranteed blocker. Google says most websites and services do not change their behavior in response to Chrome’s Do Not Track request.
Is one mobile browser proven to block the most game ads?
The cited Apple, Google, and Mozilla materials do not provide a comparable benchmark or success rate. Compare the controls available on your device and test whether the game still works with them enabled.
The Bottom Line
Start with the pop-up control for your browser, then treat notifications and tracking as separate settings. iPhone Safari offers Block Pop-ups; Android Chrome offers Pop-ups and redirects and third-party-cookie controls. These settings can reduce specific interruptions and cross-site tracking, but they cannot promise an ad-free game, and stricter privacy protection may affect site features. Keep any exception limited to a trusted site and the function you need.
