Instagram says it does not notify someone when you block them. Restrict is a quieter, lighter option that changes what they can see about your activity and how their new comments are handled. Neither setting guarantees the person will not notice a change; no notification is not the same as being undetectable.
Will someone know if you block them on Instagram?
Meta’s Safety Centre states, “When you block someone, we don’t notify them.” That means Instagram does not send them a direct alert saying you blocked them. It does not mean they are unable to infer that something has changed from their experience on Instagram.

What changes when you restrict someone?
Restrict is aimed at selected interaction signals rather than making a broad promise to hide your account. Meta says a restricted person cannot see when you are online or whether you have read their messages.

Messages and activity status
According to Meta’s Safety Centre, the person you restrict will not see your online status or read status for their messages to you.
Comments on your posts
New comments from a restricted person on your posts are visible only to that person unless you choose to review them. You can then see, approve, delete, or ignore a comment; Meta also says you will not receive notifications for that person’s future comments.

What restriction does not establish
Meta’s accessible guidance describes online status, message read status, and comment handling. It does not establish that restricting someone hides your profile, feed posts, or Stories. Do not choose Restrict on the assumption that it makes your content invisible to that person.

How to use Block or Restrict
Instagram’s exact taps and menu labels can change, and current iOS, Android, and web paths are not confirmed here. Open the person’s account in Instagram and use the Block or Restrict control shown in the current app interface; follow the confirmation prompts before finishing.
Meta’s October 20, 2022 announcement says the block flow included an option to block other accounts the person may already have or create. Check whether that choice appears in your current flow rather than assuming it is available to every account or app version.

Possibly. Meta documents that blocking does not trigger a notification, but that is not a promise that the person cannot notice a difference or draw their own conclusion. The available guidance also does not support a guarantee that Restrict is invisible. If avoiding a direct alert is your concern, Meta says blocking does not send one; if your concern is whether the other person could ever work it out, the documented evidence cannot promise that.
