Use TikTok’s in-app controls: open an account’s profile, choose the top-right menu and Block to stop contact and interaction. To send a policy report, choose Report from the profile, a video’s long-press menu, or a direct-message menu. A direct-message report can be submitted together with a block. TikTok’s labels can differ by region and app version, so use the closest equivalent option visible in your app.
Block and report are different actions
Blocking is an immediate boundary you set against an account. Reporting sends an account, video, message, or conversation to TikTok for review under its policies. You can use either action alone, or combine them when a direct message is involved.

| Action | Target | Starting point | What it is intended to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block | An account | Profile menu > Block > confirm | Stop that account from contacting you, viewing your content, or interacting with it, as described in TikTok’s documented blocking guidance. |
| Report | An account or video | Profile report flow, or long-press a video > Report | Send the account or content to TikTok for policy review. The review, not the act of reporting, determines whether TikTok takes enforcement action. |
| Report and block | A direct-message user or conversation | Inbox > chat > hold a message or open More options > Report | Submit a report and block the user in the same flow. |
Blocking does not ask TikTok to investigate a possible policy violation. Reporting does not automatically remove a post or ban an account. If you need an immediate contact and visibility boundary, block first; if the behavior or content may violate TikTok’s rules, report it as well.

Use the account’s profile
- Open TikTok and navigate to the person’s profile.
- Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Block.
- Confirm the block when TikTok asks.
TikTok’s older harassment guidance describes a blocked user as unable to contact you, view your content, or interact with it. That guidance was published in 2019, so the exact menu placement or confirmation wording may have changed. Follow the current controls shown on the profile you are viewing.

When blocking is the right first step
- Someone is sending unwanted contact and you want to stop the interaction immediately.
- You do not need TikTok to review the account, or you want the boundary in place before submitting a report.
- You are dealing with repeated contact and want to avoid opening additional messages while deciding what to report.
If the account has posted or sent material that you believe violates TikTok’s Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, blocking alone does not submit that information to TikTok. Use the relevant report flow too.
How to report a TikTok account
Report from the mobile app
- Open the person’s profile.
- Tap Share on the profile.
- Choose Report.
- Select Report account.
- Choose the reason that best describes the issue and submit the report.
Depending on the current interface, the report control may appear directly in the profile’s top-right menu rather than under Share. The important distinction is to select the account-report option, not a report option for a single post.
Report from a browser
TikTok’s Help Center also documents a browser route: open the profile’s More options menu, choose Report, select Report account, choose a reason, and submit. Browser and app menus are not guaranteed to match, so use the labels presented in the version you are using.
Choose the account-level reason carefully
The reason you select tells TikTok what kind of policy review to apply. Pick the closest available category rather than choosing a random option simply to complete the form. If the problem concerns one particular post, report that video as well; an account report and a video report address different targets.
How to report a TikTok video
Use the video’s long-press menu
- Open the video you want TikTok to review.
- Press and hold the video until the action menu appears.
- Tap Report.
- Follow the prompts, select the reason, and submit.
TikTok’s documented route is a long press on the video followed by Report. The available categories and the order of the prompts can vary by region and app version. Report content you believe violates TikTok’s Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, and select the category that most accurately describes the concern.
Account report versus video report
A video report identifies a specific piece of content. An account report asks TikTok to review the account as a whole. If an account has several problematic posts, reporting the relevant videos identifies those items directly; reporting the account separately communicates that the concern may extend beyond one post. These are separate submissions, so one does not automatically create the other.
How to report a TikTok direct message
Report one message
- Tap Inbox in the TikTok app.
- Open the chat containing the message.
- Press and hold the specific message.
- Tap Report.
- Select a reason and complete the submission.
Report the entire conversation
- Open Inbox and enter the chat.
- Tap More options at the top of the conversation.
- Choose Report.
- Select the reason and submit.
Use the message-level route when one particular message is the issue. Use the conversation-level route when the pattern or the chat itself is the concern. TikTok’s Help Center instructions distinguish between holding an individual message and opening the chat’s top-level options.
Report and block in one flow
After choosing a reason, TikTok may offer Report and block. Select that option when you want to send the report and prevent further contact in the same action. If that combined option is not shown, submit Report first and then block the account from its profile using the blocking steps above. The exact choices can differ between app versions.

What happens after you submit a report
TikTok reviews the reported item
TikTok says it reviews reported content against its policies using automated and human evaluation. If the review finds a violation, TikTok may remove the content or ban the account. A report is therefore a request for policy review, not a guaranteed removal, restriction, or ban. TikTok does not promise a fixed response time in the guidance cited here, so do not assume that a decision will arrive within a particular number of hours or days.
Your identity is not disclosed to the reported person
TikTok’s Safety Center, in its page updated December 2, 2025, states: “If you decide to report, you can feel safe knowing that TikTok will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you’re reporting.” This statement applies to the reporting context described by TikTok; it is not a blanket claim about every kind of information disclosure on or outside the service.
You may receive status information
TikTok may send updates about a report to your Inbox. The presence, timing, and detail of an update do not establish a guaranteed enforcement result. If you need to check your submissions, open the in-app report history at:

Appeals concern the account or post that was actioned
If TikTok restricts content or bans an account, it may notify the affected creator or account holder. TikTok says that users who believe their own account or post was incorrectly removed or banned can submit an appeal. That appeal is made by the affected account holder; it is separate from the report you submitted and does not reveal your identity to that person.
Which route should you use?
Use Block when your priority is immediate separation
Choose Block from the profile when you mainly need to stop a person from contacting you, viewing your content, or interacting with it. Blocking is the fastest boundary because it does not wait for a policy decision.

Use both for unwanted messages that may violate policy
For a direct message, report the individual message or whole chat and select Report and block when available. This sends the policy concern to TikTok while also applying the contact boundary.
When the menu does not match these steps
Check the target before opening a menu
- On a profile, look for Report and then Report account.
- On a video, press and hold the video itself and look for Report.
- Inside a chat, hold the individual message for a message report, or open More options for the whole conversation.
Allow for regional and version differences
TikTok’s Safety Center says content-control settings may vary depending on your region and version of the app. A June 20, 2025 update repeats that qualification. A different icon, a menu labeled More instead of Share, or a changed order of prompts does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable. Update the app through your device’s normal app store, reopen TikTok, and look for the closest equivalent labels.
Do not substitute a different report type
If you are trying to report an account but only see a video-report control, return to the profile and open its profile menu. If you are trying to report one direct message, return to the chat and press and hold that message rather than reporting only the sender’s profile. Selecting the target first helps TikTok receive the information you intended to submit.
Practical checks before submitting
- Confirm the target: account, individual video, individual message, or entire conversation.
- Pick the closest reason: the selected category directs the policy review.
- Decide whether you also need a block: reporting and blocking serve different purposes.
- Keep the distinction clear: a report requests review; it does not guarantee a takedown or ban.
- Know where to look later: report history is under the Safety Center path in the app, although labels may change.
How to choose between a message report and a chat report
TikTok gives you two different starting points inside a conversation. Holding one message sends that specific item for review. This is the more precise route when a single message is the problem and other parts of the chat are not relevant. Opening More options at the top of the chat and choosing Report addresses the conversation itself. Use that route when the concern is a pattern of messages or the chat as a whole.
Both routes ask TikTok to review the issue under its policies. Neither route promises that TikTok will remove a message, close the conversation, or ban the sender. If ongoing contact is the urgent concern, use Report and block when TikTok presents it, or complete the report and then block from the profile.
What a report can and cannot do
- It can request policy review: TikTok evaluates reported content with automated and human review.
- It can lead to enforcement: if TikTok finds a violation, it may remove content or ban an account.
- It does not guarantee a result: TikTok decides whether the material violates its rules.
- It does not set a response deadline: TikTok’s guidance does not promise a specific number of hours or days.
- It does not identify you to the reported person: TikTok says it will not disclose the reporter’s identity in this reporting context.
These limits explain why blocking and reporting are complementary. Blocking handles your immediate boundary, while reporting gives TikTok information for a policy decision.
After the report: records, notifications, and appeals
Keep an eye on your Inbox for a possible status update. TikTok may provide information there, but an update is not a promise that enforcement will occur. You can also review submitted reports in Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Support > Safety Center > Report records. Because TikTok changes menu labels, search within Settings and privacy for Support, Safety Center, or Report records if the sequence looks different.

Frequently encountered situations
The person keeps contacting me while I decide whether to report
Open the account’s profile and block it first. You can then report the account or any specific video separately. For a direct message, use the chat’s Report and block option when it is available.
I reported a video but the account is still visible
A submitted report starts a review; it does not guarantee immediate removal or account enforcement. TikTok may determine that the content does not violate its policies, or it may take action after review. Check Report records for any status information TikTok provides.
I want to report a whole chat, not just one message
Open the chat from Inbox, tap More options at the top, select Report, choose a reason, and submit. Holding a message reports that individual message instead.
Will the person know I made the report?
TikTok says it will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you report. TikTok may notify the affected creator or account holder that action was taken against their content or account, but that notification does not identify you as the reporter.
Can I report and block an account without reporting a message?
For a direct-message issue, TikTok’s combined option appears in the message or conversation reporting flow. If you only want a boundary, block from the profile. If you want TikTok to evaluate account conduct, use the profile’s Report account route. Choose the target that matches the concern rather than assuming one action covers every item.
What if I cannot find Report on a profile?
Open the profile menu and check both the Share control and the top-right options. TikTok documents app and browser variants, and labels can vary by region and app version. Look for a nearby More options or Report label, then select Report account when offered.
Should I report an account and each video?
They are separate targets. Report the account when the concern involves the account’s conduct generally, and report particular videos when specific posts violate the rules. One submission does not automatically create the other.

How long will TikTok take to decide?
TikTok describes automated and human review but does not promise a fixed response time in the guidance covered here. Check your Inbox and Report records for updates instead of relying on a particular deadline.

Bottom line
Block from the profile when you need an immediate boundary. Report an account from its profile, report a video by long-pressing it, and report a message or chat from Inbox. For direct messages, Report and block can do both jobs at once. TikTok reviews reports using automated and human evaluation, may remove violating content or ban an account, and says it keeps the reporter’s identity confidential; no report guarantees a particular enforcement result or response time.

Will TikTok tell the person who reported them?
TikTok says it will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you report. It may notify the affected account holder that action was taken, without identifying you.
Where can I check my TikTok report history?
In the app, go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Support > Safety Center > Report records. The exact labels may vary by region and app version.
Does reporting guarantee that TikTok will remove content or ban an account?
No. TikTok reviews reports with automated and human evaluation and may remove content or ban an account if it finds a violation. It does not promise a particular result or response time.
The Bottom Line
Use Block for an immediate boundary, and use the relevant Report route to request TikTok’s policy review. You can report an account from its profile, a video by long-pressing it, and a message or chat from Inbox; direct-message reports may also include Report and block.
