For the 2025 models in Kelley Blue Book’s current estimates, the Toyota Sienna costs less to own over five years and is projected to lose less value. KBB lists a five-year cost to own of $60,849 for the Sienna versus $64,847 for the Chrysler Pacifica, a $3,998 advantage for Toyota. Estimated depreciation explains the entire difference: $18,570 for the Sienna compared with $24,000 for the Pacifica.
Those are model-specific estimates, not guarantees. Trim, drivetrain, powertrain, purchase price, mileage, financing, insurance, taxes, condition and local demand can change the result. The comparison below keeps each publisher’s assumptions separate and shows how to build a more realistic estimate for your situation.

Five-year verdict at a glance
If your priority is the lowest modeled five-year ownership cost and stronger projected resale, the Sienna has the advantage in the available 2025-model data. The Pacifica’s estimated out-of-pocket spending is lower, but its projected depreciation is high enough to make its total cost higher.

What the headline gap means in everyday terms
Dividing the modeled totals by five gives an average annual cost of about $12,170 for the Sienna and $12,969 for the Pacifica. That is roughly $1,014 versus $1,081 per month when spread evenly across the ownership period. Real spending will not arrive evenly: depreciation is concentrated early, insurance and financing are paid monthly, fuel varies with driving, and maintenance can arrive in large scheduled intervals. The annual and monthly figures are simple ways to visualize the KBB totals, not additional forecasts.
The table also shows why looking only at gasoline or service bills can be misleading. The Pacifica is estimated to save $1,729 in fuel and $1,642 in maintenance over five years, yet the Sienna’s $5,430 depreciation advantage is much larger. A buyer who plans to sell or trade after several years should give residual value as much attention as the bills paid during ownership.
How the KBB totals are built
Toyota Sienna
KBB’s 2025 Sienna estimate combines $18,570 of projected depreciation with $42,279 in out-of-pocket costs. The out-of-pocket figure includes fuel, insurance, financing, state fees, maintenance and repairs. In this model, the Sienna’s largest cost is insurance at $14,475, followed by fuel at $10,222.
Chrysler Pacifica
KBB’s 2025 Pacifica estimate combines $24,000 of depreciation with $40,847 of out-of-pocket costs. KBB lists fuel at $8,493, insurance at $13,275, maintenance at $6,769, repairs at $1,934, financing at $5,010 and state fees at $5,366.
The Pacifica therefore looks slightly cheaper on cash expenses in this particular model, especially fuel and maintenance combined. Its $5,430 higher projected depreciation more than offsets that out-of-pocket advantage, leaving the Pacifica $3,998 more expensive over five years.
Why resale value changes the winner
Depreciation is a real ownership expense
Depreciation is the value your vehicle loses between purchase and sale or trade-in. It is not a monthly bill, but it represents money tied up in the vehicle and usually becomes the largest cost during the first several years. A vehicle bought at a discount can depreciate from a lower starting price, while a vehicle purchased above market value can lose more than a generic estimate suggests.
KBB’s 2026 resale award
Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value Awards name the Toyota Sienna the minivan category winner. The award uses projected residual values for average-condition vehicles with 75,000 miles after five years. KBB says the projections draw on its Official Residual Value Guide and statistical models built from millions of transactions.

That award is a forward-looking signal, not an individual resale-price guarantee. It describes an average-condition, average-mileage scenario. A Sienna with accident history, neglected service or unusually high mileage can be worth less than the projection; a carefully maintained vehicle with lower mileage may be worth more. The same conditions apply to a Pacifica.
What can move the actual resale result
- Condition: Body damage, interior wear, tire condition and mechanical problems directly affect appraisal.
- Mileage: The award’s 75,000-mile endpoint is a benchmark, not a requirement. Driving substantially more or less changes residual value.
- Service history: Documented maintenance can make a used vehicle easier to value and sell.
- Purchase price: A negotiated discount lowers the amount that must be recovered at resale.
- Local demand: Used-vehicle demand, climate and regional preferences vary.
- Market conditions: Interest rates, supply, fuel prices and broader used-car pricing can change during a five-year ownership period.
Trade-in versus private-sale expectations
A published residual projection is not the same as a dealer trade-in offer. Dealers account for reconditioning, inventory risk and their own margin, while a private sale may require more time and effort. When planning your five-year budget, test both a conservative trade-in value and a stronger private-sale value if you might choose between them. Keep the sale channel consistent when comparing the two vans.
Where the Pacifica can look better in the estimate
The KBB comparison does not say the Pacifica is cheaper in every category. It estimates lower fuel, insurance, maintenance and state-fee costs for the Pacifica in the displayed configuration, while financing and repairs are close. These are category estimates under KBB’s methodology; they are not universal operating costs for every Pacifica.
Fuel is particularly sensitive to annual mileage, fuel prices and powertrain. Insurance depends on the driver, address, coverage limits, deductible, claims history and insurer. Maintenance and repair spending depends on usage, service location, warranty coverage and vehicle condition. A buyer whose insurance quote or annual mileage differs substantially from KBB’s assumptions can see the apparent gap narrow or widen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCash flow and total cost are different questions
The lower KBB total does not necessarily mean the Sienna has the lower payment at purchase. A dealer’s price, interest rate, down payment and trade-in equity determine the monthly payment. Total cost adds the value lost to depreciation and the operating expenses over time. Compare both measures: cash flow tells you whether the vehicle fits your budget now, while total cost estimates what the ownership decision may consume over the full period.
Trim and powertrain matching is essential
A Pacifica badge covers multiple configurations, and ownership estimates can change materially by trim, drivetrain and powertrain. Do not apply the $64,847 KBB figure to every Pacifica without checking the exact version represented on the KBB page.
Edmunds illustrates the issue with a separate 2025 Pacifica Select gas estimate: its True Cost to Own page displays $58,413 over five years and $24,245 of depreciation. The same Edmunds page shows distinct totals for AWD, higher trims and plug-in-hybrid configurations. Those numbers cannot be substituted into the KBB table as if the publishers used identical assumptions.

For a fair shopping decision, match all of the following:
- Model year
- Trim level
- Gas, hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrain
- Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, where offered
- Actual transaction price after discounts and fees
- Expected annual mileage
- Financing terms and down payment
- Insurance quote and coverage level
- State and local taxes and registration fees
Even equipment differences can affect the result indirectly. A higher trim may cost more to insure or depreciate from a higher purchase price, while an all-wheel-drive version can have different fuel and tire expenses. The correct comparison is the pair of vehicles you would actually sign for, not two differently equipped listings chosen because their names look similar.
KBB and Edmunds are different calculators
KBB and Edmunds both estimate ownership cost, but their figures are methodology-specific. A lower number from one publisher does not automatically contradict a higher number from the other.
| Methodology point | Kelley Blue Book figures used here | Edmunds True Cost to Own |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle example | 2025 Toyota Sienna and 2025 Chrysler Pacifica estimates | Example shown: 2025 Chrysler Pacifica Select gas; separate results for other configurations |
| Ownership period | Five years | Five years |
| Mileage assumption | Not stated in the quoted KBB figures | 15,000 miles per year |
| Financing assumption | Included in the displayed estimate; detailed assumptions vary by calculator | Traditional financing, 10% down, 60-month loan and above-average credit |
| Cost categories | Depreciation and out-of-pocket categories such as fuel, insurance, financing, state fees, maintenance and repairs | Depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs |
| How to interpret it | Use as a KBB-based comparison between the displayed model estimates | Use as a comparative tool, not a prediction of an individual owner’s exact cost |
Edmunds explicitly describes True Cost to Own as comparative rather than predictive and notes that personal circumstances change the outcome. The same discipline applies to KBB: keep the publisher, model year and assumptions attached to every number you use.
Why figures can change when you revisit a calculator
Ownership calculators are dynamic. Fuel-price assumptions, interest rates, vehicle transaction prices and market-based residual projections can be updated. A search-result snippet may show an older or differently configured value than the opened calculator page. Record the model year, trim, date checked and displayed assumptions whenever you save a quote, and use the current opened page for the comparison.

Use the following process before deciding between a Sienna and a Pacifica. It replaces generic averages with the prices and conditions you can actually verify.
- Identify the exact vehicles. Record year, trim, drivetrain and powertrain for both candidates. If one vehicle is a plug-in hybrid or AWD version, compare it with a configuration that reflects your real alternative.
- Get real purchase prices. Use written dealer offers or documented transaction prices, including destination, dealer fees, taxes and rebates. A large difference in purchase price can outweigh a small difference in operating cost.
- Set an annual-mileage estimate. Start with your commuting, school, family and vacation driving. Run a second scenario if your mileage is uncertain, because fuel and resale assumptions respond to use.
- Request insurance quotes. Ask for the same liability limits, deductibles and optional coverage for each vehicle. Use your address and driver profile rather than a national average.
- Model financing separately. Enter the actual amount financed, interest rate, term and down payment. If you can pay cash, remove financing costs from both vehicles; if you are comparing promotional rates, document the rate and expiration date.
- Estimate taxes and registration. State fees differ by location and may depend on transaction price, vehicle value or registration schedule. Use your state’s current figures.
- Budget maintenance and repairs. Use the manufacturer’s service schedule and local labor rates, then keep a separate reserve for unscheduled repairs. Do not treat a five-year average as a guarantee that expenses arrive evenly each year.
- Choose a depreciation scenario. Use a published residual estimate as a baseline, then test conservative and optimistic resale values. Include your expected mileage and condition at sale.
- Calculate total cost. Add depreciation, fuel, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, maintenance and repairs for the same five-year period. Subtract any expected resale proceeds only if your method has not already counted depreciation, so you do not count the vehicle’s value twice.
A simple sensitivity test
Run at least three cases for each van: a baseline using the calculator assumptions, a high-mileage case and a lower-resale case. Keep every changed input visible. If the Sienna leads in all three, the conclusion is more robust. If the Pacifica wins under your actual insurance quote or purchase discount, that personalized result is more relevant than the national estimate.

Decision scenarios
Keeping the vehicle for about five years
The KBB comparison is most relevant when you expect to own the vehicle for roughly five years and your configuration resembles the displayed 2025 estimates. Under that framework, the Sienna’s lower projected depreciation produces the lower total cost.
Keeping the vehicle longer than five years
A five-year estimate cannot establish your sixth- or seventh-year cost. Additional years can bring different maintenance, repair and resale patterns, so extend the calculation with a separate long-term service and residual scenario rather than assuming the five-year ranking remains unchanged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Driving far more or less than the benchmark
Higher mileage generally increases fuel spending and can reduce resale value, while unusually low mileage can improve resale but may not reduce fixed costs such as insurance, financing or registration. Recalculate both vehicles with the same mileage assumption before drawing a conclusion.
Buying at different discounts
If one dealer offers a substantially lower transaction price, calculate depreciation from those actual prices. A published residual percentage or award cannot account for a discount that was available only in your market.
Paying cash instead of financing
Removing financing from both sides can narrow or widen the total depending on the amount financed and interest rate. Do not remove financing from only one vehicle. If a manufacturer promotional rate applies to one model, document its eligibility requirements and compare the financed amount, not just the advertised monthly payment.
Common comparison mistakes
- Mixing publishers: Adding KBB depreciation to Edmunds fuel or financing figures creates a hybrid estimate with no single methodology.
- Mixing configurations: Comparing a gas, front-wheel-drive model with an AWD or plug-in-hybrid version can make the result look more precise than it is.
- Using a search snippet instead of the current calculator page: Dynamic ownership pages can display changing values. Record the opened page, model year and date checked.
- Treating an award as a guaranteed price: The Sienna’s resale award is based on projected residual values for an average-condition vehicle at a specified mileage.
- Ignoring the purchase price: Depreciation is tied to what you pay, not only to the nameplate.
- Assuming category averages fit your household: Insurance, mileage, fuel prices, taxes and financing can differ sharply from a calculator’s assumptions.
- Counting depreciation twice: Either use a depreciation cost supplied by the calculator or subtract purchase price from expected sale price yourself; do not do both.
- Comparing monthly payments only: A longer loan can lower the payment while increasing financing cost and extending the period in which you owe more than the vehicle is worth.
- Overlooking condition at sale: A five-year residual projection assumes an average-condition vehicle. Budget for tires, cosmetic repairs and documented service if those items will affect your trade-in.
What the evidence supports
For the specified 2025-model KBB estimates, the Toyota Sienna is the cost leader by $3,998 over five years and has $5,430 less projected depreciation. KBB’s 2026 resale award provides additional support for the Sienna’s residual-value outlook, using a five-year, 75,000-mile, average-condition projection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which costs less to own over five years, a Chrysler Pacifica or a Toyota Sienna?
Kelley Blue Book’s 2025-model estimates put the Toyota Sienna at $60,849 and the Chrysler Pacifica at $64,847 over five years, so the Sienna is $3,998 lower in that comparison.
Which minivan has better projected resale value?
The Toyota Sienna. KBB’s 2026 Best Resale Value Awards name it the minivan category winner, and KBB estimates $18,570 in five-year depreciation for the 2025 Sienna versus $24,000 for the 2025 Pacifica.
Is the Sienna cheaper in every ownership category?
No. In the cited KBB estimate, the Pacifica has lower fuel, insurance, maintenance and state-fee costs. The Sienna’s larger depreciation advantage more than offsets those differences.
Do these totals apply to every Pacifica trim or powertrain?
No. Trim, drivetrain and powertrain materially affect ownership cost. Edmunds displays separate five-year totals for a Pacifica Select gas model, AWD versions, higher trims and plug-in-hybrid configurations.
What mileage does Edmunds assume?
Edmunds’ True Cost to Own methodology assumes 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, 10% down, a 60-month loan and above-average credit. Actual costs vary with personal circumstances.
Can I combine KBB and Edmunds figures?
Use each publisher’s figures as a separate estimate. Combining KBB depreciation with Edmunds fuel or financing creates a mixed calculation whose assumptions do not match.
How can I make the comparison personal?
Match the exact trim and powertrain, obtain written transaction prices, set your annual mileage, request local insurance quotes, enter your financing terms, use local taxes and fees, and test conservative and optimistic resale values.
Does the KBB resale award guarantee my trade-in price?
No. The award is a projection for an average-condition vehicle with 75,000 miles after five years. Accident history, service records, mileage, condition, local demand and market conditions can produce a different offer.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: KBB’s current 2025-model comparison favors the Toyota Sienna by $3,998 over five years, largely because its projected depreciation is $5,430 lower. The Pacifica has lower modeled out-of-pocket costs, so use your exact trim, price, mileage, financing and local insurance quote before making the final choice.
