Use Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions to control apps, websites, purchases, and media content on an iPhone. For a specific website, add it to the Never Allow list under Web Content. For age-appropriate browsing on a child’s iPhone, consider Ask to Browse or Approved Websites Only if those options are available. Screen Time also has app time limits and scheduled Downtime, which limit when or how long an app is usable rather than blocking its content.
The right setting depends on what you want to stop: access to an individual app or site, exposure to a category of content, or use during particular times. Menu names and child-safety options can vary by iOS version, age, and region.

Choose the control that matches what you want to restrict
Screen Time brings together several controls, but they do different jobs. A website filter does not replace media ratings, and a time limit does not filter what an app shows. Decide whether you need to block access, filter content, approve access, or limit time before changing settings.

| Goal | Use | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or restrict a built-in app or feature | Allowed Apps & Features | Whether selected built-in apps or features are available. Turning one off temporarily hides it from the Home Screen; it does not delete it. |
| Block a particular website | Web Content > Never Allow | A specific web address when adult-site filtering is selected. |
| Filter adult websites | Web Content > Limit Adult Websites | Web access using the available adult-site filtering option. |
| Permit only selected websites for a child | Approved Websites Only | Child web access limited to sites on the approved list, where available. |
| Require approval for new sites a child visits | Ask to Browse | Requests to access new sites in Safari and supported browser apps, where available. |
| Restrict explicit media or age ratings | App Store, Media, Web, & Games | Content categories and ratings, including music, movies, TV shows, books, apps, and other listed types. |
| Reduce time spent in apps | App Limits or Downtime | How long or at what times apps are available, rather than their content. |
Think about three distinctions before you choose. Scope means whether you are restricting one app or site, a whole category, or general web access. Control style means whether you want to block, filter, approve, or set a time limit. Account context means whether you are setting controls for your own iPhone or managing a child’s access through Family Sharing or the child’s device. These distinctions help avoid relying on a control that solves a different problem.

For example, if one site is the concern, a specific URL on the Never Allow list is more targeted than limiting all websites. If the goal is to keep a child to a small set of sites, an approved-sites-only option is a closer fit. If explicit material in Apple media services is the concern, adjust the relevant rating or explicitness controls instead of relying only on a browser filter. For a child, these controls may be configured through Family Sharing or directly on the child’s device, depending on the family’s setup. Some options and defaults depend on the child’s age and region.
Turn on Screen Time restrictions
Content restrictions are managed from Screen Time. If you are changing settings for a child, first confirm that you are using the intended child account or device; family-managed controls and settings on your own iPhone are not interchangeable. The available controls may depend on whether the child’s device is configured in a family group and on the child’s age and region.
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Open the specific section that matches your goal, such as Allowed Apps & Features, iTunes & App Store Purchases, or App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
Turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions is the starting point; it does not mean that every possible restriction has automatically been selected. Open the relevant category and choose the individual setting that addresses your concern. A web restriction, for instance, is configured under Web Content, while controls for app purchases and ratings are in their own sections.

If a path below does not match your phone, look within Content & Privacy Restrictions for the equivalent control rather than assuming the feature is unavailable. When setting controls for a child, the newer Family route may have separate Apps & Websites options. Follow the labels that appear for that device and account.
Restrict apps, features, installations, and purchases
Hide a built-in app or feature
On the iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps & Features. Switch off the built-in apps or features you want to restrict. Apple describes this as temporarily hiding the selected built-in app from the Home Screen, not deleting it. Turning the setting back on makes it available again.
This is useful when you want a built-in feature not to appear or be available in the usual way. It is not the same as removing an app from the phone, and it is not a general control for every third-party app. If your objective is to prevent a child from using a particular app and a child-specific app control is available, use that control instead. If your concern is how long the app is used, consider an App Limit or Downtime rather than treating a hidden-app setting as a time control.
Block an app for a child, where supported
Apple’s newer child controls describe this path: Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites. Select an app and block it if the option is available for your setup. A blocked app remains dimmed on the Home Screen. The exact controls depend on software version and the child’s account context.

Use this route when you are managing a child and want to restrict access to a selected app, rather than simply limiting the number of minutes spent in it. The dimmed appearance is an indication that the app is blocked, not that it has been deleted. If the Apps & Websites section or a blocking option is missing, check the current labels and available settings for the child’s account; options are not identical across every version, age, or region.
Control app downloads and purchases
To restrict installations, purchases, redownloads, or age ratings, use the relevant sections under Content & Privacy Restrictions. These may appear as iTunes & App Store Purchases and App Store, Media, Web, & Games; names can vary by iOS version. Choose the particular action or rating you need to manage rather than relying on a general app restriction to cover downloads and purchases.
Separate controls matter because restricting an app’s availability is not necessarily the same as controlling whether apps can be installed, purchased, or downloaded again. Review the action you want to prevent and choose its specific setting. If age-appropriate app access is the concern, also review app ratings in the content settings; a purchase restriction alone does not specify which ratings are acceptable.
Block one website or make child browsing more restrictive
Add a specific site to Never Allow
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites.
- Under Never Allow, add the website address you want to block.
This is the documented route for blocking a particular URL. If the goal is to limit a child to a chosen set of sites, use an approved-site or approval-based child control instead, when available. The Never Allow list is a specific-address control used with Limit Adult Websites; it is not the same as choosing a child-only browsing mode.
Choose between filtering, approval, and an approved list
- Unrestricted Access allows web access without the adult-site filter. Choose it only if that is the level of access you intend.
- Limit Adult Websites is the documented web-filtering option and can also be used with the Never Allow list for specific addresses.
- Ask to Browse requires approval when a child tries to visit new sites in Safari and supported browser apps. Existing approved sites can remain available unless later blocked.
- Approved Websites Only limits a child’s web access to sites on the approved list.
These options provide different levels of control. Adult-site filtering is useful when you want a filter while preserving broader browsing. Ask to Browse adds an approval step for new sites. Approved Websites Only is more restrictive because access is limited to the approved list. If you have a particular site to exclude rather than a need to manage all child browsing, use the Never Allow option.
Ask to Browse and Approved Websites Only are child web-access controls, not simply another name for blocking one URL for every user. Their availability depends on software version, age, and region. If you cannot find them, check the current Screen Time labels on that device. Ask to Browse is documented for Safari and supported browser apps, so do not assume that every app or browsing context uses the same approval flow.
Restrict explicit material and age ratings
Website filtering only addresses web access. To restrict explicit content in Apple media services or age-rated content, use the content controls under Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web, & Games.

- Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Choose the relevant media or content category.
- Select the allowed rating or explicitness setting offered for that category.
- Review other categories individually if you need broader restrictions; a setting for one category should not be assumed to govern every other category.
Apple lists controls for explicit material in Music, Podcasts, News, and Fitness, along with rating restrictions for movies, TV shows, books, apps, music videos, and App Clips. Labels and availability can vary with iOS version and region. Choose ratings appropriate to the person using the device; the controls are category-specific, so browser filtering alone is not a substitute for reviewing media settings.
Work through the categories relevant to the device rather than assuming one global explicit-content switch will cover everything. If the concern is a specific type of media, find that category and select its allowed explicitness or rating setting. If the concern spans several types, review each relevant category in turn, including media services and apps. The available labels and rating choices may differ by version and region, so use the choices shown on the iPhone.
Use App Limits and Downtime to control time, not content
Set an app or category limit
Screen Time supports daily limits for apps or app categories. Use an App Limit when the aim is to cap time spent in selected apps or categories. It is distinct from a content restriction: it does not itself block explicit material or make a site safe to visit.
Choose the apps or category that match the behavior you want to manage. A category limit is useful if you want to address use across multiple apps in the same group; an app-focused limit is more specific. In either case, a time allowance answers “how long?” rather than “what content?” If the content itself is the concern, add the appropriate web or ratings restrictions too.
Schedule Downtime
Downtime makes apps unavailable during a schedule, except for calls, messages, and apps you select to remain available. Apple also documents a setting to block apps during scheduled Downtime so limits cannot be ignored once reached. Use Downtime for a regular no-app period and an app limit for a daily allowance; neither should be treated as a replacement for website or age-rating restrictions.
The distinction is practical: Downtime applies to a chosen time window, while an App Limit applies a daily allowance to selected apps or categories. If a child needs access to calls, messages, or selected apps during a Downtime period, account for those exceptions when configuring the schedule. For a stronger schedule, check the option to block apps during Downtime rather than assuming the schedule alone prevents limits from being ignored.
Set up controls for a child
Parents or guardians can configure controls through a Family Sharing group or on the child’s iPhone, depending on how the devices and accounts are set up. Apple says communication and web-content defaults can be enabled for a child under 18, with age thresholds varying by country or region. Check the child account’s actual options rather than assuming every family sees identical defaults.

Start by deciding whether you are managing from the family group or directly on the child’s device. Then confirm the child account shown in the settings before making changes. A restriction configured for the adult’s own iPhone is not automatically interchangeable with one set for a child. If a feature described in a current guide is absent, the setup, software version, age, or region may account for the difference.
Communication Safety is a separate child-safety feature: Apple describes it as detecting certain sensitive imagery in supported contexts. It is not the same as blocking an app, filtering websites, or restricting media ratings. Choose it for its specific purpose rather than treating it as a general content filter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWeb controls also differ from communication controls. Ask to Browse and Approved Websites Only address child web access; Communication Safety concerns certain sensitive imagery in supported contexts. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other. Likewise, a web filter does not set ratings for books, films, or Apple media services.

The menu path or option is missing
Screen Time labels and feature availability change across software versions and can also depend on age and region. Check the current labels on the iPhone, and look for the same function within Content & Privacy Restrictions or the child’s Apps & Websites settings. A child-only option may not appear when changing settings for an adult’s own account.
First verify that you are looking at the intended account or device. Next, search within the corresponding Screen Time section for a differently named version of the control. Apple’s settings may group options under labels such as iTunes & App Store Purchases or App Store, Media, Web, & Games, and those labels can vary. If the phone’s available choices differ, follow the options currently shown rather than expecting every device to have identical wording.
An app is hidden rather than removed
Switching off a built-in app or feature in Allowed Apps & Features temporarily hides it from the Home Screen. That behavior is different from deleting an app. If you intended to manage a child’s access to a selected app, check whether the newer family Apps & Websites control is available for that child.
A website restriction is not the same as a media restriction
If the concern is explicit material in music, podcasts, books, films, or another listed category, review that category’s rating or explicitness control. A browser setting addresses web access and does not establish the allowed rating for Apple media content.
Best Value
Similarly, App Limits and Downtime regulate availability or duration, not the content shown inside an app. Use each setting for its intended purpose and combine relevant controls when the concern spans more than one area: a browser filter for web access, ratings for media, and time controls for duration or schedule.
Screen Time passcode recovery depends on setup
There is no single recovery path established for every Screen Time setup context. Before changing or resetting anything, identify whether the restriction is managed on the iPhone itself or through a family account, and consult the current Apple guidance for that setup. Do not assume that recovery steps for one account arrangement apply to another.
Which setup should you use?
- To hide a built-in app: use Allowed Apps & Features.
- To prevent access to a specific website: use Limit Adult Websites and add the address to Never Allow.
- To manage a child’s new web requests: use Ask to Browse, if available.
- To keep a child within a chosen set of sites: use Approved Websites Only, if available.
- To restrict explicit media or age-rated apps and content: set the relevant category-specific rating or explicitness controls.
- To reduce usage without setting a content restriction: configure App Limits or Downtime.
- To manage app downloads, purchases, or redownloads: choose the corresponding control under Content & Privacy Restrictions.
These built-in controls are intended for different scopes: one app or site, a content category, child web access, purchases, or a period of time. Combining the relevant controls is more precise than expecting one Screen Time setting to do all of those jobs. No additional device or physical product is necessary to use the Screen Time options described here.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I block an app on my iPhone?
For a built-in app or feature, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps & Features and switch it off; it is temporarily hidden, not deleted. For a child, Apple’s newer controls may let you select an app under Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites and block it. Availability depends on the setup, software version, age, and region.
How do I block a website on an iPhone?
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content. Choose Limit Adult Websites, then add the address under Never Allow.
How can I block explicit content on my child’s iPhone?
Use the category-specific controls under App Store, Media, Web, & Games to choose allowed explicitness or ratings for relevant categories. Apple lists controls for Music, Podcasts, News, Fitness, movies, TV shows, books, apps, music videos, and App Clips. Web filtering alone does not set media ratings.
What is the difference between Ask to Browse and Approved Websites Only?
Ask to Browse requires approval for new sites in Safari and supported browser apps, while approved sites can remain available unless later blocked. Approved Websites Only limits a child’s web access to sites on the approved list. Availability depends on software version, age, and region.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do App Limits block explicit content?
No. App Limits cap daily time in selected apps or categories. Downtime schedules when apps are available. Use Web Content or category-specific ratings and explicitness controls when the concern is content.
Can I recover a Screen Time passcode the same way for every iPhone?
Recovery depends on whether Screen Time is managed on the device or through a family account, and there is not one universal path for every setup. Identify the account context and consult Apple’s current guidance for it.
The Bottom Line
Use Screen Time’s specific control for the job: Allowed Apps & Features or child Apps & Websites settings for app access, Web Content for sites, category ratings for explicit media, and App Limits or Downtime for time. For a particular URL, use Limit Adult Websites and add it to Never Allow; for a child’s browsing, consider Ask to Browse or Approved Websites Only when available.
